Shepherd's Hut Camping: Space for a firepit

General

  • Small site on a quiet family-run farm 10 mins' drive from Malmesbury
  • On the edge of the Cotswolds, 45 minutes' drive from Bristol and Bath
  • Barbecues encouraged; firepits for hire; fresh lamb and beef for sale

Poke around the Cotswolds and wind down with a barbecue using produce fresh from the farm… peaceful and rural is the order of the day at Shepherd's Hut Camping. At this site, you’ll be breezing into a site based on a family-run farm in Wiltshire, 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury and 25 minutes from Chippenham.

This is a splendid place to come for a quiet break close to the Cotswolds – and there’s plenty of scope to get out for rural walks or bike rides on the local lanes, although you might mostly prefer to hang out on site and meet the animals or spend some time by the large fish pond.

It’s quiet here, in a field adjacent to the farmhouse, but there’s still easy access from the road on a dedicated track. A short walk across the grass (100 metres or so) gets you to the shower block, which has two flushing toilets, washing-up facilities, laundry facilities for a small charge, and two hot, curtained showers.

When you’re done exploring for the day, basking in a firepit is one way to unwind – they’re available to hire on site. Barbecues are also encouraged by Shepherd's Hut Camping. As this is a working farm, there’s no finer way to sort out dinner than to pick up the fresh lamb and beef produced on site – it’s available seasonally to cook or take home with you. Plus, plenty of other farms nearby sell fresh produce such as meat, eggs, milk and other bits – ask the site owners for tips on getting the best local grub.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

There will be music festivals occurring approximately 5 miles from the site on 26 -29 July and 02 - 05 August and whilst they will hopefully not disturb visitors, there is a chance guests might hear some noise depending on the wind direction.

Unfortunately this site is not suitable for customers with reduced mobility.

This is the most chilled and lovely site we have been to! I love that it is a working farm, tractors going about, cows mooing, chickens making chicken noises. I chatted and fussed the cows everyday and got a little bit attached to them 😁 the farmer is happy to chat about the farm and how it all works. The camping field is lovely and you are not confined to marked pitches so you can all run free and have fun. Owners are very friendly and helpful. Fire pits are available and logs are a great price. The facilities have everything you need and more. The first thing campers look for are plugs sockets! Plugs glorious plugs! And this one has them. This is how campsites should be, natural and relaxed without feeling like a housing estate for tents 😂 kids need to get dirty and experience wildlife and nature.
We found loads to do in the area. We did all kinds of prehistoric stone hunting at Avebury, the long barrow and Stonehenge. We went to Bath and littlecote Roman villa to find the Romans. We saw the hill locks on the Canal. A naughty bit of shopping in the Swindon outlet after the steam museum and lots of cow licks!
Thankyou for having us and for letting us share a part of your lovely farm.

The pitch was very spacious. Shower/toilet block was very clean and showers were hot every time. The space had lots of extras like kettle, fridge, washing machine etc. The on site animals (cows and chickens) kept the kids (2 & 3yr olds) entertained for hours.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. We had originally booked for 2 nights but extended our stay for another night as we were really enjoying the camping experience.

Lots of nice things to do around. Would definitely recommend going to bowood for a kids adventure park, waterfalland beautiful house.

We will definitely be booking again.

Me and my two young children (8&7) came here for a quick get away, booked the night before with reasonable pricing. I had a lot of time to read and relax in the tranquillity as the children found lots of other young ones to play with and especially enjoyed feeding hay to the cows and chickens. The shower block had electricity plugs which came in very handy to charge up my phone and was very clean, never running out of loo roll! Would highly recommend a stay here. We stayed in the tipi tent which was toasty and warm with freshly ironed sheets. I was gifted a botte of wine and a large packets of crisps which I enjoyed and the children stuck in to the crisps! The field had no litter and was very peaceful, the odd tractor passing on the small country road. Although there were a fair few people on the camptise it was very spacious and felt the opposite of cramped. Received a free bag of fire wood and had a lovely fire in the evening! Lovely hosts , very welcoming. 5 out of 5 stars :)

    So many wasps!
This has nothing to do with the camp site owners of course and is just nature in the summer but thought I would warn you to take a fly squatter or some bug spray, possibly A lemon grass candle to ward them off.

Local attractions

Since you’re so close to the Cotswolds here, mapping your way there might be one of the first things on your to-do list. And while it may be known for its characterful villages (Bibury, half an hour’s drive away, is one of these), there’s a beach too at Cotswold Water Park (20 minutes’ drive), making paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking easy to access, or there are giraffes, lions and other big animals to see at Cotswold Wildlife Park (45 minutes).

When you’re craving the buzz that comes with the busier towns or cities, that’s no problem either. Just outside the Cotswolds, Cirencester (25 minutes) is particularly scenic. That's if you're not too busy browsing the town’s museum or making a splash in the open-air pool. Further afield, Bath (45 minutes) and Bristol (45 minutes) have their own spoonfuls of historical sites, shops and museums.

For those days where you prefer to stick close to your nest, a trip to 12th-century Malmesbury Abbey (10 minutes) might do. Or, there’s all the artistic flair of the Elemental Sculpture Park (20 minutes) to take in and Westonbirt Arboretum’s treetop walkway and Gruffalo trail (25 minutes).

Must see

  • STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway (9.1 miles)
  • Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (9.2 miles)
  • Avebury Stone Circle (12.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Heelis (9.0 miles)
