Pitches

General

  • Scenic and peaceful site at the foot of the North Wessex Downs
  • A mile from the world-famed Westbury White Horse
  • Two fishing lakes, shop and big barbecue and events area

Ever seen the famed Westbury White Horse, high up above an Iron Age hill fort on Salisbury Plain? You can get to it within a short canter with a stay at Blackland Lakes: this peaceful rural place is a mere mile from the world-famed equine etching.

If you're more up for lazing around at base (after a trip to see the Wiltshire gee-gee, of course), Blackland has two coarse fishing lakes filled with carp, tench, perch, roach, bream and gudgeon, with mirror carp up to 25lbs in Heron Lake and bream to 11lb in both. Another lake is set aside as a habitat for wildfowl for those who'd rather laze about this green and scenic setting.

The park covers 17 acres, divided into secluded grass paddocks. A big highlight is the central barbecue barn, which can cater to groups of up to 100 via its kitchen and licensed bar. The team has also opened a well-stocked and licensed shop, selling essentials, drinks, ice cream and camping basics like tent pegs. Within the shop is a small tourist info section with leaflets on local attractions, events and details of local pubs, restaurants, and takeaways that can deliver your din straight to the site.

Blackland is at just outside the village of Caine, at the foot of the North Wessex Downs. The closest pub serving food is about 10 minutes' walk away.

Warm welcome, the site receptionist even phoned me 5 days before arrival to say they were looking forward to meeting us and to advise that the facilities block was undergoing maintenance but still useable. Easy site to find, well signposted and everything well marked and laid out on site. To be fair we only stayed one night as planned and it was very wet and soggy due to Storm Ciara, Dennis and Jorge, even the hardstanding areas were waterlogged, but it looks as though this would be a great family site with plenty of space and amenities for everyone from toddlers to grandparents.

Friendly reception but unable to assist with the lack of facilities

    Disliked:

They asked if we had been told about the refurbishment upon booking - we hadn't and wouldn't have booked had we known. We appreciate works need doing but the lack of planning here was very frustrating. Men were to use the ladies (fine - three cubicles and two showers) but ladies and disabled and toddlers had use of a single shower toilet room which was woefully inadequate - the baby changing facilities in it were disgustingly dirty. The washing up area had no hot water - and the chemical disposal point was a standard toilet with no rinsing/ hose facilities. After mornings of having to share the bathroom with worked blaring out music we presumed they would be opening another block - but apparently they couldn't as they were drained down for winter - poor planning and shocking experience!

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review. We take our feedback very seriously and the member of staff who was working wasnt aware of any official complaints logged over the weekend. Had the staff been made aware we could of certainly accomodated your needs. We apologise that informing you prior to booking had been overlooked on this occassion. We've checked our records and everyone else had been informed so for this we are very sorry. We have had a lot of feedback last year on our facilities and the changes we have been making has been positivley received by our customers so far. We had many lovely comments over the half term break from customers, so it is very unfortunate that you feel this way.
Its a shame you feel negativley about visiting again as we do feel all the positive changes will be in place ready for our season from 1st April 2020 for our customers to benefit from.
We do however offer our best wishes for your future camping travels.
Kind Regards

Very helpful... was arriving late so left the documents pinned up in an envelope for me. Horrible weather during storm Dennis, but nothing the campsite could do about that... though they did upgrade me to a hardstanding pitch due to the waterlogged ground. Facilities all fine and clean... and they're doing some improvement works, so should be even nicer in due course too!

Lovely level lakeside pitch. Great location. Strong TV signal. Nature trail/dog walk area good.

    Disliked:

Toilet and Shower facilities very poor. There were 2 shower blocks one of which was closed as it was low season, which is fair enough, the remaining block was being renovated and facilities were severely disrupted/lacking. The male campers had to use the ladies facilities, the showers of which worked intermittently and the ladies had to use the disabled/baby changing facilities, which was a single toilet/wet room. For the entire campsite there was no dedicated chemical disposal point and the toilet that was being used as a chemical disposal point was blocked for the best past of a whole day (Saturday). Seasonal pitches had vans with mouldy awnings and cluttered personalisations spoiling the lovely setting.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to feedback to us on your stay here at Blacklands. We take feedback very seriously which is why we are taking the opportunity in our low season to make changes. We did inform all campers of renovations and there has been clear signage around the ammenties to identify where each person should go. We apologise for the blockage and we have encouraged our frequent visitors on our seasonal pitches to take the opportunity at this time of the year to improve their pitches.
Its a shame you feel negativley about visiting again as we do feel all the positive changes will be in place ready for our season from 1st April 2020 for our customers to benefit from.

The campsite was lovely if a little water logged as had rained heavily for a time, and days.
reception staff very nice and welcoming, toilet blocks a little dated but warm with lashing of hot water free and hair dryers free to use. This is from a women's point off view.
    Would go back

    Disliked:

Black mould in corner of showers but a miner thing and easily sorted.

From the manager...

Beautiful lakes, friendly staff, very clean. This was our first holiday in our campervan and myself and the kids really enjoyed it. Very relaxing watching ducks waddling around and the goats were so friendly. Showers, toilets and laundry area were all clean and with hot water. Luckily the weather stayed dry and my son caught his first ever fish!
    Will definitely come back!

Local attractions

The Westbury White Horse – Wiltshire's famed giant chalk horse carved into the slope of Salisbury Plain – is about a mile from Blackland Lakes, on the edge of Bratton Downs. Standing 80 feet tall and 170 feet wide, it's viewable for 16 or 17 miles around its setting; from the horse itself, you'll be able to see Bratton Castle and the white horses of Devizes and Alton Barnes.

This is most certainly a land of archaeological and world-famed historical highlights: reach the pretty village of Avebury and its three prehistoric stone circles within 10 minutes' drive and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stonehenge within 40. If your tastes are more modern, a vintage motor museum is less than 10 minutes' walk away.

Take a trip out to any of the area's market towns such as Calne, Devizes, Chippenham, Corsham, Royal Wootton Bassett and Marlborough, all within 25 minutes' drive. Bath is about 35 minutes away.

For peaceful sightseeing within a short drive, try Bowood House and its landscaped gardens, five miles away, and the National Trust village of Lacock eight miles from the site, a magical place that's had screen appearances in the likes of Downton Abbey and Harry Potter.
