Blackland Lakes: Pitches

General

  • Scenic and peaceful site at the foot of the North Wessex Downs
  • A mile from the world-famed Westbury White Horse
  • Two fishing lakes, shop, nature trail and on-site bar

Ever seen the famed Westbury White Horse, high up above an Iron Age hill fort on Salisbury Plain? You can get to it within a short canter with a stay at Blackland Lakes: this peaceful rural place is a mere mile from the world-famed equine etching.

For those planning to spend days lazing around at base (after a trip to see the horse, of course), Blackland has two coarse fishing lakes filled with carp, tench, perch, roach, bream and gudgeon, with mirror carp up to 25lbs in Heron Lake and bream to 11lb in both. Another lake is set aside as a habitat for wildfowl for those who'd rather laze about this green and scenic setting.

The park covers 17 acres, divided into secluded grass paddocks. A big highlight is Sam's Bar, open from April to September (mainly at weekends), selling a range of draft beers and ciders, soft drinks, hot drinks, ice creams and pizzas. The team has also opened a well-stocked and licensed shop, selling essentials, drinks, ice cream and camping basics like tent pegs. Within the shop is a small tourist info section with leaflets on local attractions, events and details of local pubs, restaurants, and takeaways that can deliver your dinner straight to the site.

Blackland is at just outside the village of Caine, at the foot of the North Wessex Downs. The closest pub serving food is about 10 minutes' walk away.

The area is lovely with walks for the dogs. The staff friendly and helpful.

    Disliked:

The scruffy permanent caravans, play areas need sorting. The hard standing is gravel mixed in with wet sand and mud which will be dryer in the summer.

Thank you for your feedback, we are working hard to get the site up to our high standards and working with our seasonal pitch holders to achieve this. We hope to see you again soon.

Great location. Lots of amazing places to go for a walk and a nice town with a few good pubs only a 25 minute walk away. Site is very nice and our little dog loved it. Nice little shop with friendly staff.

    Disliked:

It’s only a small dislike and something we should have made clearer when booking but the pitch we were put on was a good 5 minute walk to the toilet block and we had a Campervan with no loo. So if you’re in a van then try and ask for a pitch near the blocks!

From the manager...

Hi Luke,

Thank you for your feedback, as of April we will have both blocks open on site for the high season, in future please do contact us with any requests and we will do our best to accommodate.

Issues with payment, possible thieves on site.06/02/2023

The facilities are quite good, although the water could be warmer in the showers.

    Disliked:

I stayed there twice. It is not possible to make the full payment through the website, you can only pay a deposit and have to pay the balance by bank transfer or by cash when checking in. The first time I stayed, I chose to pay the balance by bank transfer, which meant a trip to the bank, hence I was unavailable to work that day (can't be in 2 places at the same time). I had told the agency I was available to work the night after checking in at the campsite, but I never got confirmation from the camping site that they had received the payment, and when I tried to call (twice) they hung up on me. I ended up going there, arriving just before they closed for the day. I guessed they just expected me to wait until they confirmed they had received the monies, possibly never. Of course it was too late for me to get to work, and as punishment the agency gave me less than 2 shifts a week on average during the following 2 months (less than half the minimum salary, when I should be earning between £1,800 and £2,800 net pm). The agency's argument is that I have to make a choice between 'taking holidays' and working, and they cannot give work to people who need to take time off work (even if it's unpaid) for housing issues.
While staying there, I spotted people near my tent on several different occasions, they walked away when they saw me. On one occasion, two people, a man and a woman, unzipped the door to my tent to look inside during the day: they obviously thought I would be away, however, I was sleeping, as I work night shifts. I also had people making noise near the tent on numerous occasions. On the third day of my first stay, I was woken up at 11 am, 12 noon and 2 pm, when I had come back from work after 8 am and needed to get up and get ready for work at 3 pm. I was exhausted that night, as I had gotten less than 2 hours' sleep, and I didn't get any more shifts for several nights.
I think it's a good camping site for people who travel as a group and stay in a camper van, who don't want to sleep or rest or read books during the day, and don't have much planned during their stay. It is not suitable for single women or for hikers or anyone who wants to do some serious sighseeing and therefore needs to manage their time.

From the manager...

In response to the issues you have raised we feel there is a genuine break down in communication.
Methods of payment are cash/card and BACS, which doesn't necessarily require a trip to the bank for most.
If we had been aware of your shift pattern of working nights we could of put you in a location a little more secluded, we could not guarantee complete quiet in the day. We are based in a rural setting, home to some wildlife and a favourite with dog walkers and day visitors completing the nature trail with their children. We also have lots of work to maintain our high standards so mowing, strimming and hedge cutting may have been happening around you.

Your pitch raised alarm with a customer as you had lots of possessions left outside including clothes which were getting wet in the rain, there was a concern for your welfare in the first instance, hence why you were checked on by members of staff as the tent and possessions appeared somewhat abandoned. We do have a duty of care to our customers so we are sorry that you feel us checking on you made you feel vulnerable. We do not have reports of thieves on site and any suspicious behaviour can be picked up quite quickly due to our customers caring for the campsite and our staff carrying out regular daily checks.
We do value feedback so thank you for taking the time, and we are sad to hear that you did not enjoy your stay with us.
Kind regards
The Blacklands Team

Local attractions

The Westbury White Horse – Wiltshire's famed giant chalk horse carved into the slope of Salisbury Plain – is about a mile from Blackland Lakes, on the edge of Bratton Downs. Standing 80 feet tall and 170 feet wide, it's viewable for 16 or 17 miles around its setting; from the horse itself, you'll be able to see Bratton Castle and the white horses of Devizes and Alton Barnes.

This is most certainly a land of archaeological and world-famed historical highlights: reach the pretty village of Avebury and its three prehistoric stone circles within 10 minutes' drive and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stonehenge within 40. If your tastes are more modern, a vintage motor museum is less than 10 minutes' walk away.

Take a trip out to any of the area's market towns such as Calne, Devizes, Chippenham, Corsham, Royal Wootton Bassett and Marlborough, all within 25 minutes' drive. Bath is about 35 minutes away.

For peaceful sightseeing within a short drive, try Bowood House and its landscaped gardens, five miles away, and the National Trust village of Lacock eight miles from the site, a magical place that's had screen appearances in the likes of Downton Abbey and Harry Potter.
