Now you’ve picked Porlock as your destination of choice, the next step in the process is to select your site. And parking yourself at a tent pitch in a remote location, knee-deep in Exmoor’s spectacular scenery, isn’t the only option these days (although it’s definitely a good one).

Things to do on Exmoor when camping in Porlock
Porlock. What a treat. This classic country settlement is sandwiched between Porlock Vale and Exmoor coast, so it’s in a nifty position for a weekend escape.
After setting up your tent or dropping your bags off in your glamping accommodation, get out into the local landscape for walks around Porlock Bay’s marsh and shingle ridge before sauntering up to Selworthy Beacon with its wide-ranging views of the Bristol Channel.
In the hinterlands, ancient woodlands lead up to Webbers Post, a viewpoint overlooking Exmoor’s Horner Water valley and Dunkery Beacon, as well as Porlock Hill for prime panoramas of both moorland and the coast.
Porlock is also a fab place for a mini meander past the cottages, boutiques, galleries and tearooms – make sure to sample a Somerset staple, classic scones with clotted cream and fruity jam, at one of these first-rate establishments.
Other hamlets to hotfoot it towards include Porlock Weir, a stunner of a spot with a selection of sailing boats bobbing up and down in the harbour. Potter along the pebble beach here or head to Porlock Bay, a scenic stretch of shingle in pretty surrounds.
You could also have a wander through the woods to Culbon Church, said to be the smallest of its sort in England, before shuffling beside the rare plants and organically grown lilies, roses and camellias in the gorgeous Greencombe Gardens.
As for museums, history of the local sort is to be had at Doverhay Manor, and the museum in Allerford will have you reading up about rural life in West Somerset. The Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre, meanwhile, is well worth dropping by for the bird displays, as well as the unique chance of having an owl zoom off your gloved hand into the distance…
