General

  • Peaceful, gently sloping three-acre site 500 metres from the beach
  • A five-minute walk to the South West Coast Path and an activity centre
  • Pub and two restaurants a five-minute walk away; footpaths locally

From paddles in the sea to a stomp along the South West Coast Path, Porlock Weir Campsite is well-situated for a stay on the Devon seaside. The gently sloping three-acre site is part of the peaceful village of Porlock Weir, home to a pebble beach and small harbour, 35 minutes' drive away from Lynton and Lynmouth.

You’ll be able to leave the car behind for a while if you wish, as there’s much to do within five minutes’ walk of the site, whether that’s linking up with the South West Coast Path, going for a potter around the beach or fishing trips from the harbour.

Around the corner, still just five minutes’ walk away, there’s an activity centre that will quickly get you going with activities from kayaking, paddleboarding and coasteering to mountain biking, rock climbing, archery or bicycle hire.

Food won’t be too far away here either, as the village has a pub and two restaurants – fuel for the splendid walking trails that you’ll find in the surrounding area. The nearest farm shop is 10 minutes’ drive away too, in case you want to grab some locally-produced meat for a barbecue back on site.

Back on site, the peaceful seaside spot has views over the Bristol Channel and basic facilities, including a portaloo and a tap with mains drinking water so that you’ll be able to keep your bottle topped up.

    Disliked:

the one toilet!! you need more. Would also be great to see a compost loo rather than one with chemicals....but understand it is convenient to use the portaloo when you're a new site. In the long run, if you continue, a compost loo would be ideal.

We loved being met with a fantastic view of the sea when we woke up, when we cooked, when we walked back from the loo! So relaxing to gaze out at the view- people pootling about on the water from the Porlock Weir just below. Matthew (and his little lads and his dogs), came by daily to check in with his campers, and gave us great tips for our weekend. He obviously loves where he lives and wants to share it! Its just 5 minutes to walk down to the Weir, for breakfast, a pint or two after a walk or an bit of a water adventure with Dan from Exmoor Adventures (even closer-in fact- just across the field). We sea- kayaked across the bay, into the salt marsh and back into the small harbour at Porlock Weir.
You can catch a dramatic sunset view by taking a small walk on from the Weir or by taking the coast path around the salt marsh towards Porlock.

Fantastic location for a weekend break, a real chance to get away from busy city life, but with great hostelries, gentle walks, and opportunities for adventure if you want!
I'll be looking out for the beer festival at the Ship Inn (Lower Ship- the Upper Ship is in Porlock Village) - it sounds a right hoot!!!

    Disliked:

The field is sloping so if you want a flatter pitch, you may need to camp near the hedge which is more away from the view.
Its Matthew's first year of hosting a pop up campsite- I would really hope the family want to continue next year- it allows visitors to stay so close to the historic and interesting harbour, the salt marsh, and the coast path.

Perhaps next year you could sell bags of firewood for fires off the ground?
Other campsites do well hiring out fire-pits eg made from old washing machine drums?
Perhaps a second portaloo for when you have a busier weekend?

Lovely location, right on the water but also surrounded by Exmoor. Yes on a hill but there are flatter areas if preferred. Very peaceful and close to amenities (pubs & restaurants within walking distance) but Porlock itself only 5 minute drive which also has many local conveniences such as stores, coffee shops etc. The portaloo was incredibly clean with all the covid essentials such as wipes and sanitizer. We are with O2 and got decent enough signal to look up places to go on Google.
The owners of the campsite were so friendly! The gentleman came around on the Friday evening and had a chat with all campers. Great local knowledge and just very hospitable. We unfortunately had a situation on day 2 where we broke down in Lynmouth and unfortunately had to be recovered home.. leaving our tent and belongings at the campsite. We contacted the owners who very kindly packed up our things and dropped them to us!! Such a weight off of our minds and such a lovely thing to do. We would highly recommend Porlock Weir campsite and will be back as soon as possible!
