The Heart of Exmoor: Visitor image of the really spacious pitches with amazing views

General

  • Wild pop-up site with spectacular views over Exmoor National Park
  • A five-minute walk to open moorland; 25 minutes’ drive to Porlock
  • Quiet, no-frills hilltop pitches in an International Dark Sky Reserve

Seeking walking, cycling and wild-camping adventures in Exmoor National Park? Thumbs up for The Heart of Exmoor, a Somerset base with direct access to the moor and simple facilities on site. From your hilltop pitch, you can plan your holiday adventures while contemplating spectacular views of Winsford Hill and Withypool Common.

The back-to-basics site is spacious and peaceful, with basic amenities including portaloos, cold water and recycling bins (but please try to take trash home with you). After you’ve made friends with the farm animals, let the kids mess around in streams or walk your dogs across hilly fields. And even if you're out and about all day, save energy for later so you don’t miss the chance to check out the Milky Way on clear nights.

If you’re low on supplies, wander down to Exford (five minutes’ walk) to raid the local store, pop into a tea room for scones and cream, or sip a pint outside a pub overlooking the village green – it’s the starting point of many local walks, including a circular route around Room Hill (keep any eye out and you’ll spot the campsite in the distance).

Back on site, a two-mile hike leads across the moor to Dunkery Beacon, the highest point in the national park, where in good weather you can see for more than 80 miles. Along the way, look out for grazing Exmoor ponies and Highland cows as well as birds of prey circling above.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Single-sex bookings of 6 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

Please note that there is only spring water available and it has not tested as drinking water.

Campfires are permitted but must be on a raised firepit and not dug into the ground. Firewood is available for an additional cost.

Quiet location. Friendly owner. Arrive and depart any time. No charge for dogs

    Disliked:

Design of the compost toilet. Used them before but this one you have to sit far forward to urinate in a small hole meaning more than just your bum cheeks have contact with the toilet which I personally found disconcerting.

From the manager...

Hey,
It was lovely to meet you and your dogs! We've had lots of really positive comments about the compost toilet so I'm sorry you disliked it, thank you for your comment.

The scenery was stunning and so peace ful. Excellent directions and someone came up to see if I was ok.

    Disliked:

The price, I think it's expensive for wild camping. I paid less in porlock which included showers, kettle and somewhere to sit undercover if it rained.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. It was lovely to meet you and talk of your adventures in your van and with your paddle board.

At £13 for a solo traveller I had been told we were one of the cheapest around. We have provided a campsite which we love to camp in ourselves and many people have enjoyed this year - very back to basics so you can really enjoy your surroundings. As stated on our page we provide a compost toilet, water and bins, as well as logs for sale. I try my utmost to ensure everything is clean and well stocked. I love to catch up with campers and spend a substantial amount of time each evening learning about their stories and giving advice on the local area.

Fantastic location. The site is situated on an elevated site with beautiful views across Exmoor. The site itself is set at the top end of grazing land with ample room for at least 20 pitches. The ground is well drained and smooth and I encountered no stones when pitching my tent. Portaloos were clean and well stocked and there is a plentiful supply of water. The site owner was friendly, paying an evening visit to everyone to make sure we were all happily accommodated.

    Disliked:

The only downside (pun intended) is a slight slope from 1/4 of the way down the site to the bottom. I pitched at the top and slept happily across slope and barely felt it, whereas towards the bottom you would likely need to sleep head up the slope. To be fair this wouldn't have been an issue as it is only gentle.

From the manager...

It was great to meet you and hear of your adventures past and present. I hope you had a fab drive home on your bike. Thanks for the picture as well.

Great secluded campsite.Wild camping with a portaloo, which is handy 👌. Peaceful spot above Exford with amazing views. Walked into the village to the pubs, I’d say about a mile and half. But just follow the path down from the field and it brings you out at the village green. We walked over to Dunkery Beacon. Take in the views from there 😱. Selena who owns the field came up to greet all the campers. Very nice host. We had a bbq whilst watching the night sky and the stars. We will come back again. ⛺️

Directions

Unless you are walking or cycling, please don’t access the site via Combe Lane, which is a no-through road from Exford.

Instead, at Exford, turn off the B3224 onto Park Street towards Porlock. Follow this road out of the village and near the top of the hill cross the cattle grid at Hillhead Cross. Take the immediate right, signposted Luccombe. The campsite is the next right turn.

Local attractions

Exmoor is criss-crossed with hundreds of miles of bridleways for traffic-free walking and cycling. If you’re travelling with kids, try the family walk from the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps (20 minutes' drive), which leads through woodland along the Barle river, explore the moors on horseback (20 minutes), or on guided safaris in a four wheel drive.

All that sound like too much activity? Try out your falconry skills while handling birds of prey at North Devon Hawk Walks (15 minutes), or attend keeper talks and spot rare black leopards at Exmoor Zoo (half an hour). Most kids are also keen to see the creepy-crawlies at Tropiquaria Wildlife Park (35 minutes).

The nearest beach is at Porlock Weir (25 minutes), a shingle stretch where you can also pick up the South West Coast Path for strolls along clifftops. Further up Somerset’s north coast, you can take a dip in the Bristol Channel, go deep-sea fishing and try out numerous watersports – from surfing to coasteering – at seaside towns like Minehead (25 minutes) and Blue Anchor (45 minutes).

  • Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (24.0 miles)
  • The National Trust Killerton House & Gardens (26.0 miles)
