Plenty of space

General

  • In the grounds of a hostel in Exmoor National Park
  • Full access to hostel facilities
  • Horse riding, photography help, fishing and Exmoor safaris available

How excellent is this? The outdoorsy accommodation at Exford Hostel lets guests indulge their fondness of outdoor hols but have a little extra luxury too: site guests have access to all the facilities in the hostel including its comfy lounge, self-catering kitchen and dining room, washing machine and drying room. (And, as you'll presumably know everyone in your outdoor accommodation rather than being in with strangers in a dorm, you can feel free to kick them when they snore.)

The site part is all quite handsome (have a squint at the site pics), tucked away in the grounds of the hostel, which in turn is in the centre of Exford village – and it's all slap bang in the centre of Exmoor National Park. The scenic Somerset coast is about six miles away.

As it's Exmoor, there are of course many most excellent range of activities to try nearby: the Exford Hostel team can arrange horse riding, photography tuition, fly-fishing lessons, coasteering, Exmoor safaris and clay pigeon shooting if you let them know between booking and arrival what you might fancy.

Please note

Group bookings of 8 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

  • Liked:

Ability to use hostel facilities such as kitchen, the comfortable conservatory area and charging points. This encouraged people to be sociable. Level pitches. Outdoor and indoor seating. Clean.

    Disliked:

There appeared to be only one sink. Car park was small, which wasn’t too much of a concern except you had to carry tent etc. to the pitches.

We liked the location and the freedom to pitch where we liked. Luckily for us that was right next to the river, though may not be suitable for families with young children. The hostel facilities were great. The kitchen was well equipped and clean. Fridges, freezers, toasters and kettles were just some of the equipment available to use. There were plenty of pots and pans and utensils to use.

    Disliked:

I was concerned that there were not enough showers, however I never had to queue so they were adequate.

    Location was idyllic

    Disliked:

The bell tent needs a lot of attention. Canvas needs treating/cleaning. More blankets and lighting required. Large puddle where water had leaked into the tent previously and hadn't been dried out. Camp bed could be better for children.

Great all round... good location for Exmoor. Tent area good - very nice by the river. Friendly receptionist. Extremely good kitchen facilities, good lounge. Showers and toilet could do with a little attention but were ok.
Liked that the pub was over the road for meals (good venison pie) but didn't try breakfast as i hit he road early.
Very happy that there's cctv in common areas and especially car park to watch over the motorbike.
Will definitely stay again when next passing through.

    Disliked:

No wifi but there is in the pub so not really a problem. A plus in some ways...

Local attractions

The moorland villages of Dunster and Dulverton are a short drive away, along with the comely coastal villages of Lynton, Lynmouth and Porlock, and the smashingly spectacular scenery of Somerset's moorland, hills, woodland, wildlife, the north Devon and Somerset coastline, and the peaceful landscapes of Horner, Cloutsham Valley, Oare and Dunkery...

Both the South West Coast Path and the Coleridge way are close to hand for those who fancy splendidly scenic hikes, and eight circular walks start from the hostel. Many cycle routes are nearby.

The Exford Hostel team also recommends a picnic by the medieval bridge at Landacre, hiking among the wild goats of the Valley of the Rocks (Coleridge and Wordsworth waxed lyrical here, verse fact fans), or taking the 11-mile drive to the excellent watersports opps at Wimbleball Reservoir, all sorted by the competent South West Lakes Trust.
