Ralegh's Cross Inn: Flat pitches

General

  • In the grounds of a country inn in Exmoor National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Watchet and 30 from Taunton and Minehead
  • Pub classics, evening specials and carvery night at the restaurant

Spectacular national park views, local eats and a traditional English country inn? If that’s ticking your boxes, scurry along to Ralegh's Cross Inn, an adults-only site 15 minutes’ drive from the Somerset coastal town of Watchet.

In the grounds of the Ralegh's Cross Inn, the site is – as one might imagine – exceptionally well placed when hunger strikes. It’s a short amble from pitches to the restaurant, where chefs cook up local ingredients for pub classics, light lunches, evening specials and (on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays) carvery spreads.

Of course, there’s more to travel than the food, and the site’s in a top spot for adventures beyond tickling taste buds too. Just inside the south eastern edge of Exmoor National Park, it’s well suited to energetic explorers who are keen to venture out on hikes and bikes, and there’s bike rental available 35 minutes away.

For hols spent by the sea, it’s an easy 15 minutes to the nearest (pebble) beach in Watchet, and half an hour to the sands of Minehead. Once everyone tires of splashing about, a return to site should prove calming: soak up views towards Dunkery Beacon (Exmoor’s highest point), Bristol Channel and the Welsh hills.

Please note

Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

liked the fact we were the only people there! But it was January!! lol.
Pub on site if needed, we didn't use it.
Person that met us, nice and friendly

    Disliked:

It was a very uneven site. We were the only people there, so could choose where we thought best.
Two lots of toilets. One a make shift block with doors not tall enough so would be able to see over. Other toilets in pub building, more substantial but not 100% clean and tidy, guess they weren't expecting people at this time of year.
Massive hill climb to site, be aware. we are in a 30 year old van, so struggled!! 13 mph up it! Our plans are to take bikes in the summer, not an ideal place for this unless super fit.

The staff were pleasant and helpful

    Disliked:

The facilities are very poor. The portacabin that contains the 3 showers, loos and basins is not heated at all. The Mai. Door to it is also always open. Of the 3 showers 2 were out of action and the third though working had no light at all. Toilets were not cleaned and no loo roll for 3 days.
There is another toilet block attached to the pub which is better and has loos in that can be used instead, but no other showers. Steps to shower are not lit and they are decking which can be slippy.
It’s just not fit for purpose, there are lots of pitches so glad we weren’t here in the peak season.
There’s no WiFi or phone signal.

Lovely and quiet and a fab welcome at the pub. Nowhere to wash up.04/01/2022

Great welcome in the pub; really quiet location - no road noise and, as it was pitch black most of the time and blowing a gale, no noise from fellow campers. It was super quiet on the site so there was no problem with the fact there were only 2 showers and 2 toilets but I imagine in the summer it might be very different.
Toilets were cleaned while we were there but ran out of toilet roll in the cubicles (but that's fine because we always take our own).
Really hot and powerful showers which was a delight!
In spite of the really wet weather and boggy field, the site manager was there trying to make sure everyone got onto the site ok and was patching up a road through to stop people getting stuck. He was also helping out people who had problems with their cables for hook up, so was clearly very responsive.

    Disliked:

Nowhere to wash up and couldn't find anywhere for grey waste (although didn't ask).
Site looked a bit run down with decaying furniture outside permanent caravans - presumably used by the on-site staff.

Meals in the pub were great and all the staff were friendly.
    We had a lovely stay.

    Disliked:

Due to the weather (so no-ones fault) the ground was very wet and no-one wanted to park on the field as worried they would get stuck.
We went on and was ok.
So maybe this time of year, they could look at putting straw or gravel down to help the grip.

Local attractions

Make the most of Exmoor stays by signing up immediately for an Exmoor Wildlife Safari, clambering into the back of a Land Rover for guided excursions through the park, keeping eyes peeled for deer and the rare Exmoor ponies. There are no long treks to get going either, as the tour guides will pick guests up at Dunster, Dulverton or Exford, all within about 25 minutes’ drive.

Get a closer look at some of the area’s wildlife (as well as some more exotic specimens) at Tropiquaria, a small Art Deco zoo in a former BBC radio transmitter station 10 minutes from base, or travel a little further (30 minutes) to the Exmoor Pony Centre to learn about the native ponies and even take a ride in the park.

If interest in watery getaways was piqued by beach days in Minehead and Watchet, but less salt would be preferable, head along to Wimbleball Lake or Clatworthy Reservoir (both within 15 minutes) – the first for birdwatching, trout fishing and lessons in windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and rowing, and the second for pretty scenery, boat hire and fishing.

Dip a toe into the past by visiting the Museum of Somerset and the military and cricket museums in Taunton, half an hour away, then dive further in with trips to Dunster Castle, Fyne Court and Knightshayes, all within 35 minutes of base. Prefer to finish hols on a celebratory note? Stumble over to Yearlstone Vineyard (40 minutes) for a tipple or two.
