Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open every day but Tuesday and Wednesday for most of the year, and every day during the summer holidays) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

Liked I tried to contact the site numerous times to postpone the booking after having paid. I heard absolutely nothing! The date of the original booking has now been snd gone and still heard nothing! Really poor communication.

Liked My first time here and was blown away by the beautiful lake and the site. I had a spa one evening which you book online and a dip in the lake it was wonderful. The cafe wasn’t open as I came in the week but a great spot next door for amazing lunches. Thank for a lovely time I’ll be back…

Liked Tidy, friendly, pleasant site with modern facilities the lake was picturesque, and the cafe was excellent.

Disliked Only one gripe and it’s quite minor. The rustic wood toilet doors, although aesthetically really nice, were a little tricky to lock (I walked in on someone and found them tricky myself) and the uneven planks of their construction leaves gaps you can see in. My partner is fussy with toilets and did not like that at all.

Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre.
