Luckford Wood Caravan and Camping: Grass pitch at Luckford Wood (photo added by manager on 27/07/2022)

General

  • Peaceful rural site by the Frome river, 10 minutes' drive from Wool
  • Half an hour's drive from the beaches of the Jurassic Coast
  • Less than 10 minutes from Monkey World and the Tank Museum

Planning some Purbeck pottering? Pick a pitch at Luckford Wood Caravan and Camping, 10 minutes' drive from Wool, and you’ll be in a prime position for poking around this pretty corner of Dorset.

Bring along your boots and bikes, for there are some great walks and cycle rides to be had in the area around the site (including the 25-minute trot to the local pub – huzzah for a path that ends in pints). Kids rolling their eyes at the idea of rural rambles? The twin attractions of Monkey World and the Tank Museum are 10 minutes away in the car, and there’s heaps more days out within half an hour: beaches, sea kayaking, steam train rides and an ancient castle among them.

Life on site meanders along at a peaceful pace – it’s a most serene setting, surrounded by woodland and with the Frome river flowing by, and there’s plenty of space to walk dogs or stoke up a fire (small firepits only, ta – you wouldn’t want to set the place alight now). Take a quiet wander around the grounds and you may just spot the local deer herd popping by to graze.

Naturally, this chilled vibe doesn’t lend itself to heaps of noisy activity, so facilities here have been kept to just the basics: the smart modern toilet block has loos, showers and a washing-up area and is proudly scrubbed clean on a daily basis.

Location of the site and the pitches are really open and flat.

    Disliked:

Toilets and washing up area were not as clean as I expected and I had to clean the washing up sink before using it. Communal shower room changing area - doesn't bother me but that's very unusual these days.

Really nice friendly welcome by Grant, site manager. Very relaxed and peaceful feel to the site. Deceivingly large grass covered and forest lined site with many pitches that are large in size and not cramped. Prices for pitching here were lower than most sites, so good value for money with all amenities (except no WiFi and very poor mobile signal on EE, Vodafone much better). It rained very heavily during my stay and nearly all pitches remained firm and well drained with no mud. The toilet block facilities are look new with a modern designer look. This campsite suits those who want a nice simple relaxed stay with all the essentials and not the high prices of mainstream modern sites. Also, you're very close to the beautiful coastline (Lulworth Cove etc) and all the surrounding attractions (Tank Museum and Monkey World).

    Disliked:

My only criticisms of the site were firstly that the entrance from the main road looked rather messy with rusting classic vehicles, not a good first impression. Although, you got use to it after a while. I think if it were fenced off up to the campsite entrance it would be a massive improvement. Secondly the showers which although hot had the horrible time out button (no good when showering your kids) that lasted only seconds and when restarted the shower was cold at first with no temperature control. The shower heads were fixed and blasted water everywhere except directly on you. A simple update to a more modern shower type with temperature control would fix the problem. This obviously did not ruin my stay but was bloody irritating. In fact I really enjoyed my stay and would recommend it to anyone.

I've stayed at this site a number of times and it has been pleasant every time. The site is clean and well organised. You can see that Grant and Co have worked hard to develop the site, creating a welcoming and relaxing site with great quality facilities. The people who run the site are easy going and friendly. There have never been any rowdy groups on any of the occasions that I have stayed here. I would stay at Luckford Wood again. Thanks to Grant and your team.

The guy on reception was very helpful.
The toilets, showers washing up are excellent. Proper clean, well maintained toilets, showers.
    Firepits available.

    Disliked:

The field for pitching tents is very stony.
Hard to get any penetration with tent pegs and you can feel the stones when walking in the tent.
Whilst we couldn't hammer the majority of pegs deep enough it did hold the tent. Not sure if it was windier.

Local attractions

If you’re into all things vehicular, start your local exploration at The Tank Museum, 10 minutes’ drive away – the collection of more than 300 tanks (including Little Willie, the world’s first) is renowned as the world’s finest. Follow up with a steam-powered ride on the Swanage Railway (25 minutes away).

As you ride the rails, you’ll pass the ruins of Corfe Castle, built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror – it’s about 15 minutes from the site if you’d like to take a closer look. A mile or so up the road from the castle is the cute Wareham Bears, where more than 200 teddies live in a model village. For real-life animal antics, take the 10-minute drive to Monkey World to see the apes that found TV fame in the UK as stars of the Monkey Life.

And one can't ignore the Jurassic Coast – it’ll take you 20 minutes or so to drive to some of its most stunning sights, including Lulworth Cove, Man O’War beach and the giant stone arch Durdle Door. A walk on the South West Coast Path is an excellent way to take it all in, or you could try paddleboarding, sea kayaking or coasteering to get a different view.
