Luckford Wood Caravan and Camping: Grass pitch at Luckford Wood

General

  • Peaceful rural site by the Frome river, 10 minutes' drive from Wool
  • Half an hour's drive from the beaches of the Jurassic Coast
  • Less than 10 minutes from Monkey World and the Tank Museum

Planning some Purbeck pottering? Pick a pitch at Luckford Wood Caravan and Camping, 10 minutes' drive from Wool, and you’ll be in a prime position for poking around this pretty corner of Dorset.

Bring along your boots and bikes, for there are some great walks and cycle rides to be had in the area around the site (including the 25-minute trot to the local pub – huzzah for a path that ends in pints). Kids rolling their eyes at the idea of rural rambles? The twin attractions of Monkey World and the Tank Museum are 10 minutes away in the car, and there’s heaps more days out within half an hour: beaches, sea kayaking, steam train rides and an ancient castle among them.

Life on site meanders along at a peaceful pace – it’s a most serene setting, surrounded by woodland and with the Frome river flowing by, and there’s plenty of space to walk dogs or stoke up a fire (small firepits only, ta – you wouldn’t want to set the place alight now). Take a quiet wander around the grounds and you may just spot the local deer herd popping by to graze.

Naturally, this chilled vibe doesn’t lend itself to heaps of noisy activity, so facilities here have been kept to just the basics: the smart modern toilet block has loos, showers and a washing-up area and is proudly scrubbed clean on a daily basis.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

I think there would be plenty of room on site to extend the showers and make them them into cubicles …sometimes only 1 shower was being used but the person had locked the outside door leaving 2 empty and often a queue

Good facilities. Good, hot shower on push button. Double wash area ,clean and well thought out .With additional sinks to wash camping cooking equipment. Friendly staff. Drinking water locations out in the pitch up areas so accessible on hand where our pitch was . Easy for kids to fill up water bottles. Kids all played out in the middle of all the pitches which was nice . Sheep in neighbouring field for the kids to see. Quite at night except our tents 😬(sorry for our neighbors. Boys will be boys) good access to monkey world . Durdle door and other local attractions. Overall v.good stay . Will definitely return . Thanks 👍

Great site, not too large and good flat ground, just watch out for the tiny pieces of twig everywhere! Toilets and showers were clean (apart from when left in a poor state by other campers!) Grant was very friendly and helpful on arrival and we didn't need to contact him again once we'd settled in.

    Disliked:

My only comment would be the set up of the shower room means it can be locked by one person leaving 2 showers unused... Not a huge problem but means a bit of a wait at times. And probably only an issue in the female showers!

A terrific site, booked last minute on Pitchup for me, my wife and dog. A nice part shady, flat, electric pitch for our camper and driveway awning. A really peaceful site in beautiful countryside and close to all the Jurassic Coast attractions. We enjoyed an early morning dog walk for an hour or so.
All the facilities we used - toilets, showers, washing up area were clean and tidy, and we would love to return next time we are Dorset bound!

    Disliked:

(I actually liked this!) My wife and I are both on EE network, which had no coverage on the site, and I didn't miss phone calls, Facebook, or all the other social media at all, which added to the holiday experience! However, our neighbours who were popping in to feed our cat while we were away, tried to contact us both as they were having trouble with our front door lock! Thankfully all resolved, but just a heads up EE does not work very well and there is no site WiFi.

Local attractions

If you’re into all things vehicular, start your local exploration at The Tank Museum, 10 minutes’ drive away – the collection of more than 300 tanks (including Little Willie, the world’s first) is renowned as the world’s finest. Follow up with a steam-powered ride on the Swanage Railway (25 minutes away).

As you ride the rails, you’ll pass the ruins of Corfe Castle, built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror – it’s about 15 minutes from the site if you’d like to take a closer look. A mile or so up the road from the castle is the cute Wareham Bears, where more than 200 teddies live in a model village. For real-life animal antics, take the 10-minute drive to Monkey World to see the apes that found TV fame in the UK as stars of the Monkey Life.

And one can't ignore the Jurassic Coast – it’ll take you 20 minutes or so to drive to some of its most stunning sights, including Lulworth Cove, Man O’War beach and the giant stone arch Durdle Door. A walk on the South West Coast Path is an excellent way to take it all in, or you could try paddleboarding, sea kayaking or coasteering to get a different view.

  • Lulworth Castle & Park (2.9 miles)
