  • Peaceful rural site by the Frome river, 10 minutes' drive from Wool
  • Half an hour's drive from the beaches of the Jurassic Coast
  • Less than 10 minutes from Monkey World and the Tank Museum
Planning some Purbeck pottering? Pick a pitch at Luckford Wood Caravan and Camping, 10 minutes' drive from Wool, and you’ll be in a prime position for poking around this pretty corner of Dorset. Bring along your boots and bikes, for there are some great walks and cycle rides to be had in the area around the site (including the 25-minute trot to the local pub – huzzah for a path that ends in pints). Kids rolling their eyes at the idea of rural rambles? The twin attractions of Monkey World and the Tank Museum are 10 minutes away in the car, and there’s heaps more days out within half an hour: beaches, sea kayaking, steam train rides and an ancient castle among them. Life on site meanders along at a peaceful pace – it’s a most serene setting, surrounded by woodland and with the Frome river flowing by, and there’s plenty of space to walk dogs or stoke up a fire (small firepits only, ta – you wouldn’t want to set the place alight now). Take a quiet wander around the grounds and you may just spot the local deer herd popping by to graze. Naturally, this chilled vibe doesn’t lend itself to heaps of noisy activity, so facilities here have been kept to just the basics: the smart modern toilet block has loos, showers and a washing-up area and is proudly scrubbed clean on a daily basis.

Peaceful rural spot with roomy, flat sites & helpful staff. Great for exploring Dorset. Clean facilities, popular pizza van. Some noise noted, showers could use updating. Many guests want to come back.

Liked We loved the spacious pitch we had and checking in was simple

Disliked The showers are in need of upgrading only 3 showers on site with no lockable door unless you lock the door to all the showers and make the others unusable for others while you are in there. There is only curtains. My 13 and 22 year old daughter felt uneasy in them.

Liked On arrival we were met by a really friendly man. He told us about the site and that we could choose where to pitch up. We chose near the toilets as I am unable to walk to far. The toilets and showers were so clean and looked after, as was the rest of the site. The price was amazing too. We will definitely like to come back.

Disliked We disliked the fact that we could only stay for two nights and would have loved to stay longer and bring the family x

Liked The camp site was very spacious and the ground was very even, the whole site is well maintained, peaceful and the facilities were immaculately clean. It’s quite clear a lot of effort has gone into the site to make it as lovely for users as possible. We really liked that the campsite was dog friendly and the beagles loved it. The campsite was really quiet and not near busy roads and the lighting on an evening was just right. We liked the availability of fire pits and bbqs.

Disliked I personally think the site would benefit from a little shop for basic foods or even little gifts, fridge magnets, that sort of stuff. Overall this is not something that would deter me from recommending or staying again.

Liked Good size pitches.
Very quiet, apart from when the army are practicing on the ranges next door but didn't hear anything through the night.
Great toilets and showers.
Great welcome on arrival.
Not good signal on EE unless you can get a pitch near the house.
We use a Lebara sim for our Wi-Fi and that works fine.
TV signal good.

Disliked I think maybe the chemical toilet emptying point needs looking it at as it blocks easily, there is a plunger you can use but really it needs fixing.

Liked Excellent site, I wish I could have stayed longer. The owner couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful, the site was quiet, nice flat pitches and sparkling clean facilities. Only a couple of miles outside Wareham this is an Ideal base to explore the area.

Local attractions

If you’re into all things vehicular, start your local exploration at The Tank Museum, 10 minutes’ drive away – the collection of more than 300 tanks (including Little Willie, the world’s first) is renowned as the world’s finest. Follow up with a steam-powered ride on the Swanage Railway (25 minutes away). As you ride the rails, you’ll pass the ruins of Corfe Castle, built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror – it’s about 15 minutes from the site if you’d like to take a closer look. A mile or so up the road from the castle is the cute Wareham Bears, where more than 200 teddies live in a model village. For real-life animal antics, take the 10-minute drive to Monkey World to see the apes that found TV fame in the UK as stars of the Monkey Life. And one can't ignore the Jurassic Coast – it’ll take you 20 minutes or so to drive to some of its most stunning sights, including Lulworth Cove, Man O’War beach and the giant stone arch Durdle Door. A walk on the South West Coast Path is an excellent way to take it all in, or you could try paddleboarding, sea kayaking or coasteering to get a different view.
