  • Peaceful rural site by the Frome river, 10 minutes' drive from Wool
  • Half an hour's drive from the beaches of the Jurassic Coast
  • Less than 10 minutes from Monkey World and the Tank Museum
Planning some Purbeck pottering? Pick a pitch at Luckford Wood Caravan and Camping, 10 minutes' drive from Wool, and you’ll be in a prime position for poking around this pretty corner of Dorset. Bring along your boots and bikes, for there are some great walks and cycle rides to be had in the area around the site (including the 25-minute trot to the local pub – huzzah for a path that ends in pints). Kids rolling their eyes at the idea of rural rambles? The twin attractions of Monkey World and the Tank Museum are 10 minutes away in the car, and there’s heaps more days out within half an hour: beaches, sea kayaking, steam train rides and an ancient castle among them. Life on site meanders along at a peaceful pace – it’s a most serene setting, surrounded by woodland and with the Frome river flowing by, and there’s plenty of space to walk dogs or stoke up a fire (small firepits only, ta – you wouldn’t want to set the place alight now). Take a quiet wander around the grounds and you may just spot the local deer herd popping by to graze. Naturally, this chilled vibe doesn’t lend itself to heaps of noisy activity, so facilities here have been kept to just the basics: the smart modern toilet block has loos, showers and a washing-up area and is proudly scrubbed clean on a daily basis.

A peaceful, well-kept site with roomy spots, clean amenities, and helpful staff. Guests appreciate the fire pit rentals and pizza van. Some wish showers had more consistent temps/privacy, with a few noting occasional cleanliness issues there.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Great location, Grant was very helpful on arrival, shepherds hut was comfortable and clean,

Disliked Toilet block could do with more frequent cleaning, there’s a lot of people with not many toilets to use, don’t get me wrong, they weren’t awful but could be better.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked N/A

Disliked WORST CAMPSITE EVER BEEN TOO!
Filthy dirty Shit hole Basicly.
Over a three day/2 night stay we never once witnessed any sort of cleaning in any of the facilities. Considering it was a packed weekend filled with families some international there's no excuse to not have a cleaner, when you’re charging for the usage. This also includes no hot water in the shower at all, and when complained was told “well don’t need it as hot outside!” (Not really the point) even tho ever one was composing about the filth and the freezing cold shower.
Avoid!! unless you don’t mind paying for filth
Giving one star as lowest can give

Shepherd's hut

Liked The shepherd huts are great for a spontaneous getaway. Nice little corner plot with gravel, fire pits, close enough to the toilet and shower block. Remember to bring bedding! I didn't and had to drive to Dorchester to buy some (silly me). But overall loved the stay. Giving cleanliness a 9 out of 10 because it could do with a little more effort - but I tend to give these sorts of accommodations my own little quick clean anyway. Location was FANTASTIC for visiting Lulworth cove, Durdle Door and Corfe Castle.

Disliked Nothing to complain about.

Liked The location is great with lots of lovely places nearby.

Disliked The toilets and washing areas were disgusting!!!! They were badly “wiped round” once a day which considering the site was full, was nowhere near enough!!!
The showers have communal changing areas (there was a man in the ladies showers with his young daughter one day?!!)

Liked Lovely campsite with big pitches. Fab washing up facilities and toilets. Fairly flat pitches, lots of water points around site.

Disliked Sinks are very high so the children could not easily wash their hands after using the toilets.

Local attractions

If you’re into all things vehicular, start your local exploration at The Tank Museum, 10 minutes’ drive away – the collection of more than 300 tanks (including Little Willie, the world’s first) is renowned as the world’s finest. Follow up with a steam-powered ride on the Swanage Railway (25 minutes away). As you ride the rails, you’ll pass the ruins of Corfe Castle, built in the 11th century by William the Conqueror – it’s about 15 minutes from the site if you’d like to take a closer look. A mile or so up the road from the castle is the cute Wareham Bears, where more than 200 teddies live in a model village. For real-life animal antics, take the 10-minute drive to Monkey World to see the apes that found TV fame in the UK as stars of the Monkey Life. And one can't ignore the Jurassic Coast – it’ll take you 20 minutes or so to drive to some of its most stunning sights, including Lulworth Cove, Man O’War beach and the giant stone arch Durdle Door. A walk on the South West Coast Path is an excellent way to take it all in, or you could try paddleboarding, sea kayaking or coasteering to get a different view.
