General

  • Peaceful secluded park over a 30-acre wildlife haven
  • Free fishing on the site's own lakes and rivers
  • Woodlands walks, pitch and putt, library and boules all available

If there was an award for ‘most aptly named park’, Back-of-Beyond Touring Park in Dorset might just carry off the gong – and you'd likely give it an accolade or three for activities, location and quiet calm too.

Spread over 30 acres of Dorset woodland, river, heathland and lakes, Back-of-Beyond is reached via a quiet country lane and meanders over countryside naturally inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife: look out for deer, squirrels, moles, rabbits and the soaring sights of birds including the resident woodpecker.

The number of pitches is carefully managed among all this undisturbed space and, even better for a stampede of liberated parents, the park is adults-only.

Restful pastimes on site include free fishing on the park’s lakes and rivers (bring your own equipment and pick up a fishing licence when you arrive); boules; woodland walks and a five-acre nine-hole pitch and putt course among the squirrels, moles and rabbits (hire the necessary bits and pieces on site).

Guests can generally pick their own pitches and a particularly wildlife-filled option is available in ‘Emma’s Field’, a woodland glade. Although Back-of-Beyond is very dog-friendly, they aren’t allowed in Emma’s Field or around the fishing lakes (but pooches can let off steam in the ten-acre woodland area set aside especially for canines).

New owners Victoria and Martin took over Back-of-Beyond in February 2014 and are gently determined to keep the peaceful ethos of the site as well as keep guests tranquil re standards: the up-to-date facilities include three heated loo and shower blocks with power showers and hot water, a private/disabled shower room, hairdryers, indoor and outdoor washing-up areas and reception with morning bakery, lending library, newspapers, launderette and a shop selling bottled gas and essentials. All amenities are free to use and open 24 hours.

Essential supplies (food and beer) can be found at the two excellent pubs within walking distance; supermarkets, restaurants and two caravan and camping centres are within a few minutes by car.

We really enjoyed our stay! We were lucky enough to camp in Emma's Glade which was very peaceful and we felt we had plenty of space. The shower/ loo blocks were great- clean, pleasant to use and no queues! Staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. We'd certainly recommend.

    Disliked:

I'd recommend that campers bring insect repellent- the nearby lake attracts a lot of mosquitos and we did quite bitten. This is not a criticism of the site at all- our fault for not planning ahead!

From the manager...

Thank you for the great top score review.
The lack of rain has made the Mosquito's more prevalent than usual as the river isn't flowing into the lake very strongly so it is standing water.
However the bats and swallows seam to be having a nice insect feast each evening.
Many thanks again.

Dog friendly, quiet and well maintained site. 16/07/2018

Just back from this lovely site. First time at an adult only campsite can’t believe what a difference it made not having children running around and having to share bathrooms with them. Nothing against children, have three of our own but they are now grown up. Plus we could keep our clothes on! Previous adult only sites I’ve found had an optional dress code. 😂😂

The site is beautifully laid out and well maintained. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Molly, our pup, had a ball the dog walk was lovely and extensive and shady. She rolled in something nasty whilst out in the New Forest on the Saturday so we made use of the dog shower and then she was treated to a doggy ice cream from the camp shop, as were we. There is a nice seating area by reception which was in the shade and next to the pond, perfect for sitting and enjoying our ice creams.

Our pitch was spacious 10 x 10 still space left down the right side not shown in photo, shaded in the morning at the back of the tent, and we took our own shade.

We didn’t try the pizza but did have the fish and chips oh and the croissants from the camp shop...they are huge!

The only downside... we don’t have any weekends left this summer to go back so will have to wait till next year! Though might be able to squeeze a late weekend before they close so can try one of their pods... bit of glamming to finish the season with.

Thank you for the full review and the pictures.
And yes, we do keep our clothes on- Adult only, not naturist please.
We are so glad there were so many parts to the park you enjoyed and we really hope you can squeeze in another break with us. Do come and try the glamping. I am sure you will love it.
Many thanks again.

Not a great deal other than it being adult only.

    Disliked:

We felt crammed in and were embarrassingly close to the people next to. Hearing EVERY word of their conversations (yes, that close) we spoke in whispers to each other. Had there been anyone opposite us too we would not have stayed.
Our caravan got an ant infestation.
We were put next to the toilets with the park three quarters empty.
There are very few toilets and the disabled toilet is also the shower. So really, the disabled sticker on the toilet is just for show.
Very expensive (£132/4 nights) for basic and very cramped pitches.
    The ‘wi-fi’ is a near non-existent signal.

From the manager...

Thank you for the review and we are sorry we didn't meet your expectations, which we completely understand are personal to yourselves and we cant please everyone.
I would like to answer your points.
You say you felt cramped? Our smallest pitch is 10 metre square which is generally 30% larger than a standard pitch. This is remarked apon on our AA grading as the pitches being very large and spacious. I cant understand why you felt cramped.
I am sorry you got an ant infestation. I cant see how we can be responsible for that.
With regard to where you were placed. Firstly you say we were 3/4 empty and you came in July. We have been full or over 80% full since May. This goes against your previous statement of being cramped.
Also, we ask all customers to choose their own pitch, as we do not allocate unless full. So if you choose the pitch near the shower blocks, that was your choice, not us placing you there.
We have 13 toilets, 9 showers and 15 sinks, so not 'very few' as you state.
The disabled room is a self contained toilet /sink /shower so the customer has privacy. I suppose the same as a bathroom at home, and this is common practice. I cant see why you should object to this set up?
The price is based on area, location, quality and demand. We follow competitors park and we are priced correctly. If we were overpriced we wouldn't fill up and be as successful as we are with the high sore in reviews we receive.
The WiFi is a free (non chargeable) offering that is currently at reception and in the next few weeks will cover the whole park (again for free).
I am sorry you didn't enjoy your stay and wont be coming back and we hope you the best in future visits to other cheaper parks.
Many thanks

Extremely friendly, helpful staff, who really appeared to care that you enjoyed your stay. The pitches are good size and it's well laid out. Lovely little, well-stocked shop with all the necessities and some good local produce too. The facilities were ok, nothing special though.

    Disliked:

The facilities were ok, but not great - loo paper ran out and really there are not enough showers for a site that size.

From the manager...

Thank you for the 8/10 review. So glad you enjoyed your stay and you thought the park had so many good points.
Regarding the showerblocks / facilities.
These are obviously required to be a certain standard and grading.
They get the top score from the AA for quality but to us they are always a work in progress and each year we invest more into them to make them better.
We check toilet paper several times a day and have also put two toilet rolls in each cubicle so that there should always be a roll. I am sorry if it run out whilst you used it.
Regarding the amount of facilities. For the amount of pitches we have we actually have more than ample for the licence. We actually have more showers, toilets and sinks then required. And again this coming year we plan on adding a additional shower, toilet and sink.
Thank you for the review and the feedback that we always appreciate.

Directions

We do have issues with our address when put into some satnav devices. Please print out these directions and follow these when you are close to the site to ensure you find us easily.

From the north or east
From the M3, take J14 onto the M27 westbound and join the A31 (signposted Ringwood). Pass Ringwood; stay on the A31 to St. Leonards and pass St. Leonards Hotel on left. At the next roundabout (signed Boundary Lane), turn right into the site lane. Take care: this turn is set back from the roundabout by a few yards, so look for our sign and one for Shamba.

From the west
Follow the signs for Ringwood on the A31 eastbound. Pass The Woodman pub on your left. At the next roundabout go straight over and immediately left into the site lane.

Drive straight down our lane, pass Shamba and go through the twin towers to our barrier. When you arrive at the barrier system press the button for attention.

Local attractions

On the edge of the New Forest, Back-of-Beyond has Avon Heath and Moors Valley Country Parks, Ringwood and Avon Heath within soothing cycling distance (hire a bike on site if you’re not bringing your own); Bournemouth and Poole a little further on, and for city sightseers, Salisbury and Christchurch within easy reach. Maps of local bike routes are provided free in reception. If you’re sightseeing via car, the A31 is half a mile away for access to the New Forest and the Jurassic Coast.

Very varied sights and activities are handy within an easy five—15 minutes’ drive, whether your tastes range towards pottering around museums, historic houses and New Forest villages, birdwatching on Avon Heath, picking up bargains at boot sales/shopping centres, or sampling the best of cream teas and local produce in Dorset cafés and restaurants.

The biggest undercover market in the south of England, including a massive flea market and car boot sale every Saturday, is at Wimborne a few miles away (do try and make room for Wimborne Minster and Stapehill Abbey Crafts and Gardens too).

Shop, sightsee and club the night away in Bournemouth, or stick to its sandy stretches for sunbathing, surfing among the artificial reef and windsurfing; on land, canter about the countryside on horseback or zip around the 50 or so exhibits at the Bournemouth Aviation Museum. A bangingly good nearby attraction is the Ringwood Raceway, with banger, stock car racing and crackingly good crashes.

Christchurch, Poole, Salisbury, Winchester and the Jurassic coast are 20–30 minutes’ drive away coastwards and inland for a mammoth amount of things to see and do to suit all tastes: miles of award-winning beaches, sea fishing, fossil walks, cathedrals and National Trust houses and gardens.
