Back of Beyond Touring, Camping and Glamping Park: Space to gather

General

  • Peaceful secluded park over a 30-acre wildlife haven
  • Free fishing in the site's river and wildlife lakes in season
  • Woodlands walks, pitch and putt, library and boules all available

If there was an award for ‘most aptly named park’, Back-of-Beyond Touring Park in Dorset might just carry off the gong – and you'd likely give it an accolade or three for activities, location and quiet calm too.

Spread over 30 acres of Dorset woodland, river, heathland and lakes, Back-of-Beyond meanders over countryside naturally inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife: look out for deer, squirrels, moles, rabbits and the soaring sights of birds including the resident woodpecker. The site is dog friendly too (apart from in one of the wildlife-laden accommodation areas) and there's a 10-acre woodland area set aside especially for canines.

Restful pastimes include free fishing on the park’s lakes and rivers (bring your own equipment and pick up a fishing licence when you arrive); boules; woodland walks, and a five-acre nine-hole pitch and putt course among the squirrels, moles and rabbits (hire the necessary bits and pieces on site).

The up-to-date facilities include three heated toilet and shower blocks with power showers and hot water, a private/disabled shower room, hairdryers, indoor and outdoor washing-up areas and a reception with morning bakery, lending library, newspapers, launderette and a shop selling bottled gas and essentials. All amenities are free to use and open 24 hours a day.

Essential supplies (food and beer) can be found at the two excellent pubs within walking distance; supermarkets, restaurants and two caravan and camping centres are within a few minutes by car.

10amp hook up. Shingles, our dogs suffered and they split our new ground sheet.

From the manager...

Dear Ken.
Thank you for the top scoring review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay.

We do have 10AMP as that seems sufficient for the high majority of use.

The shingle is standard on hard standing pitches and we really have not had any issues with it. The pitches have been used now for months and I have not heard of any groundsheet issues.

I hope you will come again.

    Disliked:

Toilet block wasn’t always clean. Not enough to cope with number of campers on site.

From the manager...

I am pleased you enjoyed the park and what we have to offer. I am sorry that you found the toilet blocks not up to standard.
We are incredibly busy at the moment as people haven't been away for a year so our numbers are so high. We have employed more wardens and we are deep cleaning the shower blocks twice a day as well as spot checks. We are asking using government advice that motorhome and caravan owners with their own facilities to avoid the showerblocks due to the COVID situation. We also ask guests to clean up after themselves for everyones sake. This makes it safer for the guests and the staff and therefore should allow a cleaner safer block. Unfortunately a lot of guests wont do this and insist on using them. Therefore we are trying our best and we are generally successful as you can see from other reviews but i am disappointed that you felt let down. Believe me, we are trying our best.

    The staff were friendly.
On-site bar and a well stocked shop.

Ideal as base-camp for travelling around the New Forest and Dorset coast line.

    Disliked:

The main road into the site is a single carriage way with a couple of blind corners and hidden speed humps. I guess that's why it's named the Back of Beyond.
Dog owners not cleaning up after their pets in the woodland walking area.

Thank you Simon. The location is great for exploring the South Coast. Hope we will see you again.

Poor cleanliness and lack of Covid safe sanitizing in shared facilitie18/06/2021

Loved the woodland setting and access to wildlife and birds

    Disliked:

The traffic noise from the main road even though it was a 10 minute walk away. But more disappointed with the lack of Covid safe sanitising/ cleaning of public/ shared facilities.Even though it was expected that guests should use their own on board facilities where possible it was also stated that guests should clean sanitised shared showers and toilet areas, the staff rarely did a daily clean ( showers were dirty/ muddy and talcum powder left uncleaned) .There was also a lack of cloths/ sanitiser in shower blocks for guests to use.Not a five star experience for the price paid

From the manager...

Hi Pat.
With regard to your review.
We are disappointed if you felt our COVID policy wasnt up to scratch. We do pride ourselves in our procedures and cleanliness is extremely high on our agenda. As you see we score top marks on this in the reviews. At the moment we are doing 2 deep cleans a day on each block. With COVID we do ask customers to use their own facilities if they have them and also to clean before and after use of the blocks to keep themselves, others and our staff safe. Therefore we do leave cleaning materials at the blocks, but unfortunately these get stolen quite regularly.
The park is full at the moment and therefore the showers are busy but we try our best to keep them clean and COVID safe for customers and staff.
I am sorry if you feel this was not the case.
Regards
