Back of Beyond Touring, Camping and Glamping Park: The yurt

General

  • Peaceful secluded park over a 30-acre wildlife haven
  • Bournemouth and Christchurch 20 minutes' drive
  • Woodlands walks, pitch and putt, library and boules all available

Spread over 30 acres of Dorset woodland, river, heathland and lakes, Back of Beyond meanders over countryside naturally inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife: look out for deer, squirrels, moles, rabbits and the soaring sights of birds including the resident woodpecker. The site is dog friendly too (apart from in one of the wildlife-laden accommodation areas) and there's a 10-acre woodland area set aside especially for canines.

Restful pastimes include boules, woodland walks, and a five-acre nine-hole pitch and putt course among the squirrels, moles and rabbits (hire the necessary bits and pieces on site).

Facilities here include heated toilet and shower blocks, a private disabled shower room, hairdryers, washing-up areas, a reception area, Monty's Bar and a shop.

Essential supplies (food and beer) can be found at the two excellent pubs within walking distance; supermarkets, restaurants and two caravan and camping centres are within a few minutes by car.

Enjoyed the small woodland, and the fields, plenty of seating around to sit and enjoy the peaceful countryside and birdsong.

What a beautiful site this is, really well laid out with spotless facilities. The warm welcome made me feel really at ease. The showers were the best I've experienced. Hot, good pressure and no need to keep pressing an 'on' button. The cubical had a screened off seat and hooks, which was also really convenient. The woodland behind offers offers a short walk and is great for dogs who can run off lead. Plenty of birdlife to enjoy. Access into the new forest is a short drive away. There's also a bar, which looked great, offering local beers on tap etc. The log burner looked really cosy. Imagine it's also lovely in the summer months with seating outside. As for road noise, I could hardly hear anything - certainly compared to other sites with easy access to main roads. The birdsong was much more prominent. This site will definitely be one that's revisited. Really enjoyed the stay. Thank you :o)

    Lovely site and staff

    Disliked:

Disappointed that the dogs were not allowed to walk out of the back of the site to The New Forest as that was our main reason for going. Only short walk on site unless you cross dual carriageway.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review our park.

Access to the Castleman Trail from the back of the park is not yet fully completed, if you had popped into reception a member of staff would have provided you with a map which would have shown you the best route to take from the park.
There are lot's of walks in the area other than the Castleman Trail such as Moor's Valley Country Park, Avon Heath and Hurn Forest, which although is on the opposite side of the A31, you can access this via a footbridge to make crossing the road much safer.

Lovely open site, lots of space on grass pitch by lake, large clean toilets and showers, really hot water in washing up room. I stayed one night in March (frozen condensation on the inside of my basic van) and arrived a bit late but Keith was very happy to meet me at the gate to let me in. Hard to imagine a better site than this…

    Disliked:

Thank you for your 10/10 review Graham, Keith will be delighted to be the first member of the team to receive a review this season!

Well run and super clean site19/09/2022

  • Liked:

The site is extremely well run. Wash and toilet facilities are clean, showers are hot and not limited, or charged as an extra. There are lovely lakeside and woodland walks, you can hear lots of birdsong.
We booked an astroturf pitch which makes a huge difference to ease of pitching. We arrived in a heavy rainstorm and it helped that the tent footprint wasn’t sitting in a muddy puddle when we packed up.
The location is good with easy access to the New Forest and the Dorset / Hampshire coast and shops nearby. There are visiting catering vans most evenings if you don’t feel like cooking.

    Disliked:

The road noise from the distant A31 is amazingly loud in certain conditions. It is a very busy road day and night, so although the site is quiet and you can find peaceful walks there, if you want total serenity, it may depend where your pitch is located if you’re camping. Probably not a problem in other accommodation.

From the manager...

Thank you for the top score of 10/10 and we are pleased to see you will be visiting us again. Many thanks.

Such a lovely, peaceful site. Friendly atmosphere and excellent facilities, right down to individual cloths to wipe down each separate sink surface after use. A couple of small lakes at the back of the site, made a nice place to wander or sit and soak up the sunshine and a private woodland walk to stretch the legs or take the dog for a walk, was an added bonus. Every night, there was a different take away option from well organised delivery vans and of course the wonderful bar, set undercover, but outside, which made a relaxing place to unwind and chat to fellow campers/caravaners. Very dog friendly. Situated alongside the A31,(but far enough away to avoid traffic noise), it made an ideal base to head out and explore Dorset. We cannot recommend this site enough. Excellent.

Directions

Some guests have issues with the site address when put into some satnav devices. Please print out these directions and follow these when you are close to the site to ensure you find the site easily.

From the north or east:
From the M3, take J14 onto the M27 westbound and join the A31 (signposted Ringwood). Pass Ringwood; stay on the A31 to St. Leonards and pass St. Leonards Hotel on left. At the next roundabout (signed Boundary Lane), turn right into the site lane. Take care: this turn is set back from the roundabout by a few yards, so look for the site sign and one for Shamba.

From the west:
Follow the signs for Ringwood on the A31 eastbound. Pass The Woodman pub on your left. At the next roundabout go straight over and immediately left into the site lane.

Drive straight down the lane, pass Shamba and go through the twin towers to the site barrier. When you arrive at the barrier system press the button for attention.
