General

  • Peaceful secluded park over a 30-acre wildlife haven
  • Bournemouth and Christchurch 20 minutes' drive
  • Woodlands walks, pitch and putt, library and boules all available

If there was an award for ‘most aptly named park’, Back-of-Beyond Touring Park in Dorset might just carry off the gong – and you'd likely give it an accolade or three for activities, location and quiet calm too.

Spread over 30 acres of Dorset woodland, river, heathland and lakes, Back-of-Beyond meanders over countryside naturally inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife: look out for deer, squirrels, moles, rabbits and the soaring sights of birds including the resident woodpecker. The site is dog friendly too (apart from in one of the wildlife-laden accommodation areas) and there's a 10-acre woodland area set aside especially for canines.

Restful pastimes include boules, woodland walks, and a five-acre nine-hole pitch and putt course among the squirrels, moles and rabbits (hire the necessary bits and pieces on site).

The up-to-date facilities include three heated toilet and shower blocks with power showers and hot water, a private/disabled shower room, hairdryers, indoor and outdoor washing-up areas and a reception with morning bakery, lending library, newspapers, launderette and a shop selling bottled gas and essentials. All amenities are free to use and open 24 hours a day.

Essential supplies (food and beer) can be found at the two excellent pubs within walking distance; supermarkets, restaurants and two caravan and camping centres are within a few minutes by car.

The site is extremely well run. Wash and toilet facilities are clean, showers are hot and not limited, or charged as an extra. There are lovely lakeside and woodland walks, you can hear lots of birdsong.
We booked an astroturf pitch which makes a huge difference to ease of pitching. We arrived in a heavy rainstorm and it helped that the tent footprint wasn’t sitting in a muddy puddle when we packed up.
The location is good with easy access to the New Forest and the Dorset / Hampshire coast and shops nearby. There are visiting catering vans most evenings if you don’t feel like cooking.

    Disliked:

The road noise from the distant A31 is amazingly loud in certain conditions. It is a very busy road day and night, so although the site is quiet and you can find peaceful walks there, if you want total serenity, it may depend where your pitch is located if you’re camping. Probably not a problem in other accommodation.

Such a lovely, peaceful site. Friendly atmosphere and excellent facilities, right down to individual cloths to wipe down each separate sink surface after use. A couple of small lakes at the back of the site, made a nice place to wander or sit and soak up the sunshine and a private woodland walk to stretch the legs or take the dog for a walk, was an added bonus. Every night, there was a different take away option from well organised delivery vans and of course the wonderful bar, set undercover, but outside, which made a relaxing place to unwind and chat to fellow campers/caravaners. Very dog friendly. Situated alongside the A31,(but far enough away to avoid traffic noise), it made an ideal base to head out and explore Dorset. We cannot recommend this site enough. Excellent.

Loved every minute there. The best campsite. Exceptionally clean, bar onsite, pub around 15min walk away, woods perfect for dogs to run around, fish and chips van comes every Wednesday and Saturday. Felt very secure and welcome at the site. Friendliness of the team is beyond any expectations. Everyone so helpful- can't fault on anything.

Thank you for the top score and the comments. So pleased you enjoyed the facilities.
Yes we do have strict rules regarding outside visitors as if it was a free for all with dozens coming on and off each day we would soon have a major issue on our hands. Thanks for the comments.

payed for Premium pitch and got dumped at the back end of the site 15 paces from the poo dump and other choice facilities .They knew we were taking our dog and hey guess what all the dog walking is up the top of the site and NO dog walking facilities are at the bottom .The toilet and shower block was literally across a gravel road so all night you were kept awake by the noise of gravel being walked on the pitch said privacy hedges separate the pitches well the two branches did not separate anyone and we had other campers dislocating the water supply so they could fill there water containers so all in all a total waist of £600 for 11 nights pounds as we could not eat breakfast for the smell of sewage that was always in the air we ate off site as the fish and chips we got was dry and the chips were the worst iv ever tasted .The staff when I went to the shop and asked for potatoes at the supposed Well Stocked Shop were uninterested and told me they dont do veg go to the m&s up the road when I asked if I could pet the dog the females comment was :Thats what hes there for ! rude not once did anyone bother to check if everything was ok we are 73 and 69 years old and have been scout leaders for a long time even back woods camping with the troop but this is the worst site we have ever been to they dont give a hoot and the description of the site is untrue there are NO privacy fences just dead twigs that do not screen anything and pitch 81 is just paying to witness a line of campers emptying poo and the gravel they have over the site makes it impossible to be quiet 5 star i dont think so

From the manager...

We are so disappointed to read your review.
Pitch 81 is a huge pitch and is in constant use and we are shocked to hear about the awful smell you describe as a constant smell so bad you couldn't eat breakfast. Did you report any of these issues at the time? In contrary to your comments the staff here are all helpful and certainly not rude and we would have tried our best to resolve your isses and even try and move you to make your stay more enjoyable.
There is screening on that pitch you cannot see the waste areas and it is a pitch a feel with a lot of privacy as next door is a camping pitch that is often not used as it has no electricity.
I am shocked to hear that campers were taking water from your pitch particularly when there is a water point next door.
I do have to say that our facilites are top notch as we have just invested over £100k improving them and our dog walk is one of the largest on any site and really only a few minutes walk from your pitch so to say its the worse site you have ever been to is extremly harsh and I feel unfair.
We are a campsite shop and we cannot stock fresh food as we would be just constantly throwing it away as we don't have the trade to support fresh produce and the M&S is just down the road and does stock fresh.
We feel that in view of your feelings we are surprised and disappointed you did not make us aware of them during your stay to allow us the chance to improve them.
We are a campsite not a hotel and the staff are wardens and if you have a problem then they are around to fix them.
With regards to the hedges they are not dead twigs but natvie hedging that we planted ourselves to encourage the natural habitat, on our website there are lots of photos and even a video showing how the pitches are laid out and how they look so we make it as clear as we possibly can as to the look and feel of the park before you book.
We did win Best park in Dorset by the readers of Practical Caravan for the last 2 years as voted by our guests so I am relieved that not everyone feels the same as you do.
I am very sorry to have not met your expectations and I wish you had made your voice heard during your stay rather than after. I wish you the best in finding a park that meets your needs better in the future.

Directions

Some guests have issues with the site address when put into some satnav devices. Please print out these directions and follow these when you are close to the site to ensure you find the site easily.

From the north or east:
From the M3, take J14 onto the M27 westbound and join the A31 (signposted Ringwood). Pass Ringwood; stay on the A31 to St. Leonards and pass St. Leonards Hotel on left. At the next roundabout (signed Boundary Lane), turn right into the site lane. Take care: this turn is set back from the roundabout by a few yards, so look for the site sign and one for Shamba.

From the west:
Follow the signs for Ringwood on the A31 eastbound. Pass The Woodman pub on your left. At the next roundabout go straight over and immediately left into the site lane.

Drive straight down the lane, pass Shamba and go through the twin towers to the site barrier. When you arrive at the barrier system press the button for attention.
