General

  • Small and quiet farm with miles of walks all around
  • Half an hour's drive from the Jurassic Coast
  • Modern facilities and free wifi

Farm the crew out to Moonfleet Farm if you fancy a small and quiet place set in the Dorset countryside, with room for the kids to exhaust their energy among the fields and designated walking areas to let the dog off the leash.

We also rather fancy the ten-minute walk direct from the farm along the 'smugglers' footpath' to the local village shop and pub, then home to settle down in front of a roaring campfire for food and sunset vistas over the distant Blackmore Vale…

Moonfleet is a working sheep farm on the western edge of the village of Higher Ansty, quiet and rural enough for a peaceful getaway, but easily accessible to main Dorset attractions and about half an hour from the Dorset coast.

It has miles of local walks snaking its surroundings and fishing ponds on site at which to land rudd, roach, barbel, crucian carp, tench and perch. Day and weekly fishing tickets can be bought from the team.

The farm has modern facilities including a shower and loo block with underfloor heating and hairdryers, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point, drinking water taps and a laundry room with a free washing machine and a coin-operated tumble dryer. Showers, the hairdryers and wifi are all free.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

    Location beautiful; owners helpful and friendly; washblock clean and modern;

    Disliked:

The yurt (as opposed to the shepherds huts). The quality of beds, tent layout, furniture and general feel was not what you might expect for the price requested. Barely fits the two extra (kids) beds, and pitched on quite a slope making the table that dominates the middle of the tent an odd experience to sit at. Furniture feels like cast off which haven't got any other home, rather than specifically selected to make the yurt as welcoming/comfy as possible; ok if you are charging <£50, but not if you're charging over £100.

The grounds and the relaxed atmosphere, was made to feel very welcome and the fact that it was so relaxed only rules were to keep you safe and not to spoil others stay was fantastic. The facilities were clean. I loved that the pitches were spacious and laid out, it's off putting when you pull on a busy site and can't find anywhere to pitch! The farm was beautiful and we had a fab stay! Excellent site

Directions

Higher Ansty is approximately 12 miles north east of Dorchester.

From the south
Take the A35 Dorchester exit (Northbrook exit) and follow signs towards the Piddlehinton and Cheselbourne, then take the Cheselbourne turning.
Follow the road through Cheselbourne, Melcombe Bingham then into Ansty.
You' will pass the Fox Inn on your right. After about 500 yards turn left in front of a converted chapel. Follow the road into Higher Ansty. You'll see Moonfleet Farm on the left, set back from the road (last house in the village).

Local attractions

The walks around Moonfleet Farm along local lanes and through scenic Dorset countryside lead to the likes of pretty local village Milton Abbas, Milton Abbey, Athelhampton House, Cerne Abbas and sending the kids into fits of giggles when they spy mighty chalk Cerne Giant etched into the hillside. Arf.

A heap of other Dorset history is a little further afield, such as that at the former Saxon cathedral of Sherborne Abbey, or at historic houses and gardens, abbeys and churches. Also go for Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck and potter around the county town of Dorchester with the Dinosaur Museum, Dorchester Museum, Teddy Bear Museum, Tutankhamen Exhibition and the Roman Amphitheatre. (Have a look at the Thomas Hardy Trail and weekly market in Dorchester too.)

Wareham, Swanage, Weymouth, and Salisbury are easily accessible by car and have enough to do to keep you going for several weeks; among our many recommendations are puffing along on award-wining and steamy Swanage Railway, seeing Salisbury's splendid cathedral, wandering around the RSPB reserve at Weymouth or hiking the 15 or so miles of the spectacular Purbeck Way.

Fishing fan? Investigate the waters around the harbours of Poole and Weymouth.

Must see
