General

  • Small and quiet farm with miles of walks all around
  • Half an hour's drive from the Jurassic Coast
  • Modern facilities and free wifi

Farm the crew out to Moonfleet Farm if you fancy a small and quiet place set in the Dorset countryside, with room for the kids to exhaust their energy among the fields and designated walking areas to let the dog off the leash.

We also rather fancy the ten-minute walk direct from the farm along the 'smugglers' footpath' to the local village shop and pub, then home to settle down in front of a roaring campfire for food and sunset vistas over the distant Blackmore Vale…

Moonfleet is a working sheep farm on the western edge of the village of Higher Ansty, quiet and rural enough for a peaceful getaway, but easily accessible to main Dorset attractions and about half an hour from the Dorset coast.

It has miles of local walks snaking its surroundings and fishing ponds on site at which to land rudd, roach, barbel, crucian carp, tench and perch. Day and weekly fishing tickets can be bought from the team.

The farm has modern facilities including a shower and loo block with underfloor heating and hairdryers, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point, drinking water taps and a laundry room with a free washing machine and a coin-operated tumble dryer. Showers, the hairdryers and wifi are all free.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Highly recommend this site was a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere rope swings and lots of space for the children and dogs , good facilities including a fridge ,washing machine and dryer nice hot showers and hairdryer ma and all close to the camping area and we were allocated a fire pit and allowed barbecues and good size pitches

    Disliked:

We found nothing to dislike on site but I would say take your groceries etc as there is only a small farm shop and pub near by nearest big supermarket is 12 miles but we knew this so were already organised

Rural and rustic site on a working sheep farm. Clive the owner was very friendly and helpful, facilities are well thought out and clean. Lots of space for the kids to play, good selection of four fishing ponds. Pub and shop working easy walkable distance (across two fields was easiest) beautiful countryside setting.

    Disliked:

Nothing really, didn't catch any fish but that could be down to our fishing skills

Friendly owners. Not many showers but they are great showers big enough for a family of 4. Beautiful countryside surrounding. Fire pits available for use.

    Disliked:

Generally liked everything about the site but there were a few too many stinging nettles around especially by the hook ups and water taps.

My boys (11 and 8 years old) loved staying on Moonfleet farm. Farmer Clive very kindly gave the boys a ride in his tractor!! What a treat!! The boys got on really well with other campers, they walked their dogs for them and made lots of friends. It was so hard to leave the farm. We stayed in a yurt which was really cosy and warm! Farmer Clive came every morning with bags of wood chips for BBQ and for the furnace in the yurt. The shower/toilet rooms were really clean!! This farme is fantastic. I would recommend it to you all!!

We had an amazing stay at Moonfleet Farm. Very friendly welcome and the facilities are very good and to a high standard. The location is stunning and a great place for walking with the children and dogs. The site is really relaxing, it was great to be able to have a fire pit. The children enjoyed the ducks coming up to the tent every morning for breakfast. Would go back again.

We loved the site and the area. Great for walking or just relaxing. It was lovely to escape from wifi so the children could be children and we could switch off from the outside world. They and us had a great couple of days; we walked for miles up to the Iron Age fort to take in the amazing views. The campsite itself is beautiful and the family are lovely. We will definitely be back.

The location is stunning, great for walks and also just to sit around and relax. Our dog Teddy had a brilliant time. The site is really relaxed in attitude and culture which is just what we wanted. It was amazing having the fire pit going every night with fire wood provided by the farm. The toilet facilities are very good and of a high standard. Moonfleet has to be my favourite campsite that I've been to in the last 39 years. Highly recommended.

Directions

Higher Ansty is approximately 12 miles north east of Dorchester.

From the south
Take the A35 Dorchester exit (Northbrook exit) and follow signs towards the Piddlehinton and Cheselbourne, then take the Cheselbourne turning.
Follow the road through Cheselbourne, Melcombe Bingham then into Ansty.
You' will pass the Fox Inn on your right. After about 500 yards turn left in front of a converted chapel. Follow the road into Higher Ansty. You'll see Moonfleet Farm on the left, set back from the road (last house in the village).

Local attractions

The walks around Moonfleet Farm along local lanes and through scenic Dorset countryside lead to the likes of pretty local village Milton Abbas, Milton Abbey, Athelhampton House, Cerne Abbas and sending the kids into fits of giggles when they spy mighty chalk Cerne Giant etched into the hillside. Arf.

A heap of other Dorset history is a little further afield, such as that at the former Saxon cathedral of Sherborne Abbey, or at historic houses and gardens, abbeys and churches. Also go for Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck and potter around the county town of Dorchester with the Dinosaur Museum, Dorchester Museum, Teddy Bear Museum, Tutankhamen Exhibition and the Roman Amphitheatre. (Have a look at the Thomas Hardy Trail and weekly market in Dorchester too.)

Wareham, Swanage, Weymouth, and Salisbury are easily accessible by car and have enough to do to keep you going for several weeks; among our many recommendations are puffing along on award-wining and steamy Swanage Railway, seeing Salisbury's splendid cathedral, wandering around the RSPB reserve at Weymouth or hiking the 15 or so miles of the spectacular Purbeck Way.

Fishing fan? Investigate the waters around the harbours of Poole and Weymouth.
