  • Small and quiet farm with miles of walks all around
  • Half an hour's drive from the Jurassic Coast
  • Modern facilities, fishing ponds and campfires allowed
Farm the crew out to Moonfleet Farm if you fancy a small and quiet place set in the Dorset countryside, with room for the kids to exhaust their energy among the fields and designated walking areas to let the dog off the lead. You might also rather fancy the 10-minute walk direct from the farm along the 'smugglers' footpath' to the local village shop and pub, then home to settle down in front of a roaring campfire for food and sunset vistas over the distant Blackmore Vale… Moonfleet is a working sheep farm on the western edge of the village of Higher Ansty, quiet and rural enough for a peaceful getaway, but easily accessible to main Dorset attractions and about half an hour from the Dorset coast. It has miles of local walks snaking its surroundings, and fishing ponds on site at which to land rudd, roach, barbel, crucian carp, tench and perch. Day and weekly fishing tickets can be bought from the team. The farm has modern amenitiess including a shower and toilet block with underfloor heating and hairdryers, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point, drinking water taps and a laundry room with a free washing machine and a coin-operated tumble dryer. Showers, the hairdryers and wifi are all free.

Liked Absolutely wonderful, really welcoming by the hosts, good services which we didn’t need to use but looked brilliant and clean. We liked how the pitches were laid out with grass dividers. Beautiful landscape, didn’t want to leave. Thank you

Power optional grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The location of the campsite was absolutely stunning, with picturesque views that made it feel like a real escape. The site itself was nicely presented and had a relaxed, peaceful atmosphere throughout our stay. It was also incredibly quiet, with only two other visitors during our four days there, which made for a very calm and enjoyable experience overall.

Disliked Unfortunately, the cleanliness of the facilities was very disappointing. The shower rooms and toilets were dirty, with visible cobwebs, spiders, and dust, suggesting that cleaning was infrequent. More concerning was the shared kitchen area. On arrival, there appeared to be rotting food scattered across the floor, and the bin was not emptied for at least two days. The smell was extremely unpleasant—strong enough to make you retch upon entering the building. This was a real shame, as it detracted significantly from an otherwise lovely setting.

From the manager: This is very disappointing!
The facilities are regularly checked, (at least twice a day) and we display signs asking guests to contact us if they're not happy with anything. Needless to say, these guests didn't raise any concerns during their stay.
We took a rare couple of days off so were away at the time but easily contactable.
The site was being managed / cleaned in our absence.
I won't apologise for spiders webs! We're in the country and can remove them daily only for more to appear the next day......

Liked An ideal place for families with children. The owners are friendly, there are plenty of animals around, and fishing ponds are nearby. A 10-minute walk or less than 5-minute drive takes you to The Fox Inn pub, where you can enjoy a delicious dinner.
You can book a billiards table or a pool on site.

Power optional grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The farm has loads of room for kids to run around and play, there are also a couple of swings on a tree in the campsite that kept my son busy for ages. The walks around the ponds are lovely and quiet, but there were a lot of biting insects, which is to be expected on a farm in the summer, so pack bite spray if, like me, you're prone to being bitten. It was only a short walk through the fields to the local pub which is also quiet and friendly, and serves great food. All the facilities here are clean and well maintained. Also, they are located close to the campsite, so you don't have to walk really far in the dark for a late night wee. We also enjoyed the friendly farm dogs who popped in and out of the campsite, my son loved playing fetch with them, and one came and relaxed by our campfire one evening. Overall, we had a wonderful few days at Moonfleet, and we would definitely visit again.

Local attractions

The walks around Moonfleet Farm along local lanes and through scenic Dorset countryside lead to the likes of pretty local village Milton Abbas, Milton Abbey, Athelhampton House, Cerne Abbas and sending the kids into fits of giggles when they spy mighty chalk Cerne Giant etched into the hillside. Arf. A heap of other Dorset history is a little further afield, such as that at the former Saxon cathedral of Sherborne Abbey, or at historic houses and gardens, abbeys and churches. Also go for Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck and potter around the county town of Dorchester with the Dinosaur Museum, Dorchester Museum, Teddy Bear Museum, Tutankhamen Exhibition and the Roman Amphitheatre. (Have a look at the Thomas Hardy Trail and weekly market in Dorchester too.) Wareham, Swanage, Weymouth, and Salisbury are easily accessible by car and have enough to do to keep you going for several weeks; among our many recommendations are puffing along on award-wining and steamy Swanage Railway, seeing Salisbury's splendid cathedral, wandering around the RSPB reserve at Weymouth or hiking the 15 or so miles of the spectacular Purbeck Way. Fishing fan? Investigate the waters around the harbours of Poole and Weymouth.
