Golden Cap Holiday Park: The area surrounding the park

General

  • Part of a 2,000-acre National Trust estate on the Jurassic Coast
  • A 150-metre stroll from a beach for sea angling and fossil hunting
  • Fishing lake, play area and convenience store on site

Want to feel on top of the world? Travel down to Dorset and Golden Cap, the highest point in the south of England and part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate.

Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most cap-tastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by peaceful Dorset countryside and part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting.

Facilities at the park are excellent – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked convenience store. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket online.

Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has a sauna/steam room and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

Views of the sea from half-way up Big Berries camping field. Facilities were good, there were about 15 toilets in the block for Big Berries and a few showers which are spacious, friendly staff. Big Berries camping field, although on a hill, you can usually find a relatively flatish pitch and choose where you want to go/left to get on with it/not micromanaged. Water-taps placed around various points around the site. Fabulous walks straight from the site. We stayed in September, so it wasn't very busy. Nice and peaceful, plenty of space between us and other campers.

    Disliked:

Uphill walk from the facilities (about 5 minutes walk) to half way up the field, would take a couple of minutes more to the top. Its not really a dislike when you are taking in the views and enjoying the outdoors, because that is what we were there for, but if you are carrying crockery from the facilities, or have kids in tow, or dodgy knees just bear this in mind. Its a bit steep but not very steep, you just need to factor it in. You definitely need a torch for night time as its very dark. Be prepared for all weathers of course as it is exposed to winds from the sea the higher up you camp. With the right kit and clothing its fabulous.

Local attractions

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor.

There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pitstop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail, or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country. A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting.

Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth, and the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips.

If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, or to get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park. For more grownup west Dorset attractions try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum… the kids might not mind these too much if you then take them to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.

Must see
