Golden Cap Holiday Park: The area surrounding the park

General

  • Part of a 2,000-acre National Trust estate on the Jurassic Coast
  • A 150-metre stroll from a beach for sea angling and fossil hunting
  • Fishing lake, play area and shop on site

Want to feel on top of the world? Travel down to Dorset and Golden Cap, the highest point in the south of England and part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate.

Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most cap-tastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by peaceful Dorset countryside and part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting.

Facilities at the park are excellent – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked shop. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket online.

Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has a sauna/steam room and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

Location superb. Facilities and organisation exceptional. Would definitely choose the site again but would perhaps choose a hard standing pitch as grass pitches had quite an incline, even using levelling ramps. Thank you for a lovely few days.

The location was beautiful with coastal walks directly from site. The shower and toilet facilities very clean, laundry/washing up area also well maintained. Even though a relatively large site, it didn’t feel that due to the layout. Shop on site, pub and beach within very easy reach. You will need your levellers although if you forget, there are blocks available for you to use. Really enjoyed my stay and the dog and I will definitely return.

    Disliked:

It would be useful to have a dog poo bin in dog exercise area as without one, I discovered, it encourages irresponsible dog owners not to pick up. I intended to suggest to reception but left before I remembered!

The location was great.. no far away from other seaside locations, just a 5 min walk to the beach, the facilities on site were brilliant and clean. The site was very pleasant.. there are other varied options of stay. Bell tents, safari tents, Glamping pods, caravans and lodges. The staff are friendly, the on-site shop is very useful but can be a little overpriced. Morrisons supermarket is a short 3miles drive if you prefer more variety.
There is an on site burger van providing a variety of meal options and a local pub beside the beach which is beautiful.
Parking is available by the beach for £5 a day and we liked that we could watch the beach front via the live online camera on wdhl website.
It’s very dog friendly and there are plenty of walks nearby. We had pleasure in watching the farmer on his quad rounding up the sheep on the hillside with his sheepdog.
We have booked a return pitch to come back.

    Disliked:

Not a level pitch for tents but this is not a massive issue

Fantastic locality for walking the lovely coastline and countryside. Facilities good, and well-stocked Spa on site. Good spacing between pitches.

    Disliked:

The grass pitches are generally on sloping ground, gravel seem more level if that’s an issue. Facilities a reasonable walk from some grass pitches. Ground is clay so gets slippy in wet.

Wonderful three night stay. We were very lucky and had glorious weather which made the walks up the hill from the campsite and also down to the beach a real pleasure. Our pitch was spacious and quiet. The facilities were clean and a generous number of showers etc whatever time we needed them. A very picturesque site and plenty to do straight from the van without the need to drive. There is a lovely pub a short walk away directly beside the beach and also a well-stocked shop and kiosk for hot meals.

Local attractions

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor.

There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pitstop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail, or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country. A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting.

Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth, and the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips.

If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, or to get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park. For more grownup west Dorset attractions try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum… the kids might not mind these too much if you then take them to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.

Must see

  • Mapperton House & Gardens (11.3 kilometres)
  • Abbotsbury Swannery (17.2 kilometres)
