Golden Cap Holiday Park: The area surrounding the park

General

  • Part of a 2,000-acre National Trust estate on the Jurassic Coast
  • A 150-metre stroll from a beach for sea angling and fossil hunting
  • Fishing lake, play area and shop on site

Want to feel on top of the world? Travel down to Dorset and Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast of England and part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate.

Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most cap-tastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by peaceful Dorset countryside and part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting.

Facilities at the park are excellent – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked shop. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket online.

Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has a sauna/steam room and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

We would come back, but only if we could get a hard standing pitch15/05/2023

The site was immaculate with excellent facilities and services. The washrooms were absolutely first class.
Location is wonderful and the beach and amenities there suited us very well

    Disliked:

The only thing to fault it was the disappointing start to our weekend when waterlogged land meant we couldn't access any of the grass pitches (the type we had booked) and as no hardstanding was available the only option was to be towed on to a pitch (to sink and be surrounded by mud).
I accept the weather is beyond the control of the site, but we would have liked a call in advance to explain the situation before we travelled. We couldn't leave the pitch until Sunday (we arrived on Friday) but fortunately things had dried off enough for us to get out and home.

Always great to return to Golden Cap site , our favourite of all time.
Before the big lodges on the front arrived we had a seasonal space for four years with our touring caravan and loved every day in this special and spectacular part of Dorset, we would unequivocally endorse and recommend this site to our friends and family, even though we’d probably rather keep it quiet and unspoilt as this is the beauty of this area.

Gravel pitches difficult to level the caravan as on quite a big slope Would prefer hardstanding but these were limited and unavailable.

    Everything! Stayed an extra day.
My second stay and will be booking again for September.
Spring at Golden Cap is particularly lovely...peace amidst the sounds of lambs, birdsong and the sea. Lovely to walk to the beach with my morning coffee and hot croissants form the Spar shop. Great pub nearby and endless choices of walks. Possible to get the regular bus up and down the coast.
Fabulous site in great location. Hot showers and well kept facilities and pitches regularly checked without intrusion by staff.Felt safe as a solo campervanner.
On a slope so will acquire some levelling blocks but it was not a problem!
My idea of the perfect off season break. Thank you again.

Local attractions

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor.

There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pitstop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail, or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country. A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting.

Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth, and the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips.

If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, or to get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park. For more grownup west Dorset attractions try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum… the kids might not mind these too much if you then take them to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.

Must see

  • Mapperton House & Gardens (7.0 miles)
  • Abbotsbury Swannery (10.7 miles)
  • Montacute House (16.4 miles)

  • Shute Barton (11.0 miles)
