General

  • Part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate on the Jurassic Coast
  • 150 metres from a shingle beach for sea angling and fossil hunting
  • Fishing lake on site

Want to feel on top of the world? Traverse down to Dorset and Golden Top, the highest point in the south of England and part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate.

Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most toptastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by peaceful Dorset countryside and part of the World Heritage Jurassic Coastline. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – set in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting.

Pitches overlook the sea or the coastal hills, and amenities at the park are excellent overall – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked shop with three separate areas: gifts and local goods, groceries and a tourist information and coffee area. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket from reception.

Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has tennis, a sauna/steam room, a gym and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

Rarely go back to the same place as there are so many lovely sites and places to still try but fell in love with this stunning site last year so returned, right by the sea, extremely friendly staff, beautifully clean and well maintained, lovely ports to visit and enjoy fresh sea food, if you like chilling, fabulous scenery and value for money then book it, if you like walking, friendly people & a immaculate place to shower, then book it.

    Disliked:

The anchor inn, last year it did gorgeous food that was both legible and edible, this year it had a very complicated menu that needed an interpreter, very over the top with ingredients and it was a regular topic of conversation with many that we overheard complaining how complex it had become and we love our good restaurants, shame as the setting the anchor sits on is second to none, last year we ate in the anchor most nights and it was excellent

Facilities were excellent. Washrooms clean & convenient. Assistance avaliable but not intrusive. On site pizza delivery & shop were quality. Surroundings are tidy and filled with flora & fauna, wildlife, stunning scenery plus dogs are truly welcomed. Nights were sheltered and quiet with clear views of the night sky.

    Disliked:

Bright lights on the site that interfered with great views of the night sky. There must be a safety lighting option that doesn't take away night vision.

Location wise you can't go wrong with this campsite. The views are outstanding, and most pitches seem to have a sea view. The ground does slope slightly, but that's Dorset. The shingle beach a few minutes walk from the campsite is very pretty. There is a shop on the site, selling the essentials. They also have a small selection of camping/caravaning accessories. The shower/toilet blocks are clean and well lit, as are the washing up facilities for your dirty dishes. The I went with my partner and her 9 year old daughter. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We definitely recommend this campsite. Would we return in the future? Yes.

This campsite is awesome! The campsite is located on the picturesque Golden Cap, only a few minutes away from the beach. The facilities are very good. The shower blocks were nice, they can be busy at times but if you get up early enough or go after the rush it's fine. There are also washing up facilities for our dishes. If you're stuck for food you can buy pizzas from the site shop/kitchen. The campsite is within walking distance or a short drive away from several eateries. On the beach is the Anchor pub which serves food (although quite pricey). Only a matter of minutes away in Chideock are the Clock Inn and The George.

If you want to the campsite is also within range of some lovely walks. The most notable is the walk up to the Golden Cap itself.

In terms of price, I would say that Golden Cap Holiday Park is appropriately priced for what they offer.

I would definitely recommend this campsite to anyone looking to camp in Dorset. I will definitely be returning at some point in the future.

Local attractions

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor. There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pit stop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country.

A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting.

Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth, the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips, seafood cafés and locally caught fish to go with your chips, or getting active with paragliding, climbing, golf or diving.

The park is two miles from the town of Bridport with its famous market introduced in the 16th century by Good Queen Bess – go along on Wednesdays or Saturdays for bargains in clothes, antiques and local produce and make that the kickstart of a shopping trip also covering Dorchester, Sherborne and Beaminster.

If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, see the inhabitants at Kingston Maurward Gardens and Animal Park or get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park.

After a trip to one (or more) of these, they might not moan too much when you go to one of the more grownup West Dorset attractions: try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum, before relenting and taking the sprogs to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.

Must see

  • Mapperton House & Gardens (7.0 miles)
