General

  • Part of a 2,000-acre National Trust estate on the Jurassic Coast
  • A 150-metre stroll from a beach for sea angling and fossil hunting
  • Fishing lake, gift shop, grocery sales and coffee area

Want to feel on top of the world? Travel down to Dorset and Golden Top, the highest point in the south of England and part of a 2000-acre National Trust estate.

Golden Cap Holiday Park is the most toptastic place to take all this in, as it’s surrounded by peaceful Dorset countryside and part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. And, as should be expected in Dorset, it’s right next to the water – in the seaside village of Seatown and 150 metres from a shingle beach known for its sea angling and fossil hunting.

Facilities at the park are excellent – there are two big modern shower/toilet blocks, a launderette and a well-stocked shop with three separate areas: gifts and local goods, groceries and a tourist information and coffee area. Wifi is available across the whole park priced from an hour to a season – just buy a ticket from reception.

Guests can also pay to use the leisure facilities at the other West Dorset Leisure Holiday Park in the area, Highlands End Holiday Park which has tennis, a sauna/steam room and a heated indoor pool. And if you just can’t bring yourself to walk that 150 metres for some beach fishing, you can take it easy instead at Golden Cap’s own fishing lake.

Lovely campsite- not the best facilities12/08/2020

The campsites location was perfect for us- it was a short walk to the beach, pub and there was a small shop on site for essentials and ice cream. The staff were also very friendly. Very much liked the fish and chip van on a Saturday night

    Disliked:

We had a few concerns regarding COVID procedures- for example the toilets for big berries campsite only has three showers and was relatively small For the amount of people on the campsite- it could quickly get cramped and dirty and needs more regular cleaning so not ideal for social distancing. It would also be appreciate having more Hand sanitizer stations as there was none at where you would get water from.

hilly, very open, slightly rowdy campsite. Too far from toilets and shower block for the kids. Closest showers were always cold, had to walk to the other block for a warm shower

+ Pitch where you like on Big Berries field - plenty of space on arrival
+ Closeness to the beach; 10 min walk to a shingle beach
    + Well serviced shop
    + Nice, family friendly atmosphere
+ Well respected 'quiet' time at night
+ (and of course, great location)
    + Great value
+ Super clean toilet/washing up area following COVID-19 guidelines
+ Lots of groups pitching together

We, and our small children, walked 7 miles just doing daily stuff around the site and beach on each day so definitely one for the fit and eager (or those looking to work off the BBQ and drink!)

    Disliked:

    - No toilet block in Big Berries camping field (10-15 min walk)
    - No lights in field at night (walking to toilet)
    - Field is on a slope. When busy, little option but to pitch on a slope
    - Lots of promotion about on site facilities - but free facilities are a drive away at another site (ie swimming pool, cafe etc)

    Disliked:

Just could do with more variety of food in the shop as there isn’t a great shop close by and the lane is a little tricky sometimes.

Staff were very friendly, small selection of groceries on site useful and I liked that we could pick where to pitch our tent in big berries!

    Disliked:

Pitch was very open which meant we were more subject to windy conditions than other areas of the site. Likely not much golden cap can do though.

Local attractions

Start at Stonebarrow Hill for 25 miles’ worth of walking trails around Golden Cap, making sure to pause after you puff uphill for the views across Lyme Bay to Dartmoor.

There’s a National Trust information point, shops and toilets in an old radar station on the hill to make a pitstop at before taking the trail through Langdon Hill Wood, taking the Smugglers’ Trail, or clambering cliffwards to see the ancient Thorncombe Beacon and views to Bridport and Chesil Beach, one of the biggest shingle stretches in the country. A walk east from the beacon will take you to the seaside village and coastal views of Eype, or you can wander west to the beach at Charmouth for more fossil hunting.

Other recommended day trips from Golden Cap are Lyme Regis with crazy golf on top of the promenade, the fishing village of Beer which can be combined with a trip to Seaton or Sidmouth, and the miles of sandy beach at West Bay with boat trips.

If you have little animal enthusiasts along on your trip, take them to hand-feed the 600 swans at Abbotsbury Swannery, or to get nautical at Weymouth Sea Life Park. For more grownup west Dorset attractions try Forde Abbey, Sherborne Castle or the Haynes Motor Museum... the kids might not mind these too much if you then take them to Dorchester’s award-winning Dinosaur Museum.

Must see

  • Mapperton House & Gardens (7.0 miles)
  • Abbotsbury Swannery (10.7 miles)
  • Montacute House (16.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Shute Barton (11.0 miles)
  • Loughwood Meeting House (11.3 miles)
