Treacle Valley Campsite: Amazing sunset views

General

  • Relaxed and spacious site with views towards Dartmoor
  • Within easy reach of Torbay's beaches and Dartmoor National Park
  • Paignton Zoo, aquarium, seaside towns and more a short drive away

For a sweet-as break on a working farm, head to family-friendly Treacle Valley Campsite in the tiny village of Daccombe, between Dartmoor National Park to the west and more than 20 English Riviera beaches towards the east.

This is a top spot for all ages: kids will be kept occupied at the play area or on all the wide open space around the accommodation area, and walks to the village through the surrounding countryside start right from the pitches.

Treacle Valley's café/shop stocks all the basics you might need while you're on your hols, and provides a handy and free freezer block service 24/7 from the laundry room in case you want to pack up a hamper with bubbly (possibly accompanied by a few sandwiches) and head out for the day.

When you get hungry you're more than welcome to fire up the barbie or cook up something tasty over your campfire – for anything more substantial, head into one of the nearby seaside towns for supermarkets, seafood restaurants, fish and chip takeaways and posh pub grub. The nearest pub is a 20-minute walk away.

We have just been on our 4th visit to treacle valley and it is even better now they have a shop with everything you may need and an ice block swap (this really helped us in the 27 degree heat)

Shade from the trees was really nice during the heat. Wood available for fire pits and the pits themselves are free to borrow

    Disliked:

We stayed at 10 campsites this summer and this was by far the worst. Showers were DISGUSTING, hair, grass, tampons and even food and empty wrappers in the shower that stayed there for the whole time we were there. Pitches are very slopey and if you’re in the second field it’s a trek to the shower block as there is only one on the first field. People also warned us they had had belongings stolen in the shower block !

Local attractions

For stuff to do nearby, try a visit to the historic village of Cockington, three miles away, where there's a manor house and a cricket ground plus some 16th-century thatched stone cottages and a traditional pub serving cream teas.

The award-winning caves of Kents Cavern – once home to prehistoric humans – are also within easy reach of Treacle Valley; this subterranean network lies close to some spectacularly scenic coastal areas with several walking routes along Torbay's UNESCO Global Geopark – one of only seven in the UK.

A walk around Babbacombe coves and cliffs begins at Anstey's Cove (opposite Kents Cavern), to wind its way along a scenic track and bring you out into the pretty village of Babbacombe in Torquay; take a ride on the famed Babbacombe Cliff Railway, then follow up with a wander around four acres of award-winning gardens showcasing hundreds of model scenes and railways at Babbacombe Model Village.

Take the kids on an animal adventure to explore the marine displays of Living Coasts coastal zoo and the enclosures of Paignton Zoo, both within six miles, or visit the seaside towns of Torquay, Newton Abbot, Paignton or Totnes for miniature golf, arcades, ice cream shops and beaches.
