Next to farmland

General

  • Relaxed and spacious site with views towards Dartmoor
  • Within easy reach of Torbay's beaches and Dartmoor National Park
  • Paignton Zoo, aquarium, seaside towns and more a short drive away

For a sweet-as break on a working farm, head to family-friendly Treacle Valley Campsite in the tiny village of Daccombe, between Dartmoor National Park to the west and more than 20 English Riviera beaches towards the east.

This is a top spot for all ages: kids will be kept occupied at the play area or on all the wide open space around the accommodation area, and walks to the village through the surrounding countryside start right from the pitches.

Treacle Valley's café/shop stocks all the basics you might need while you're on your hols, and provides a handy and free freezer block service 24/7 from the laundry room in case you want to pack up a hamper with bubbly (possibly accompanied by a few sandwiches) and head out for the day.

When you get hungry you're more than welcome to fire up the barbie or cook up something tasty over your campfire – for anything more substantial, head into one of the nearby seaside towns for supermarkets, seafood restaurants, fish and chip takeaways and posh pub grub. The nearest pub is a 20-minute walk away.

Beautiful setting and easy to find. Recycling facilities. Great location. Very friendly staff. :)

    Disliked:

Pretty much all of the ground in the field I was located in was sloped, albeit gently. Although the showers are warm and clean there isn't much room in the cubicles to put dry clothes - i.e. no shelf and only one hook - and you have to hang clothes and your town over the doors and wall.

Incredible view, practical location, helpful and friendly owners, nearby public transport, clean facilities, more than reasonably priced. Very laid back and relaxed.

    Disliked:

This is more of a recommendation than a dislike. Even though there is a sign that asks campers not to play loud music, some of them, specially during weekends, did. This is not the campsite's responsibility, but it might be a good call to produce more emphatic reminders. Finally, if you are on foot, bear in mind that the site is in a valley, so be prepared for very steep country lanes to leave or access the campsite. A taxi to Torquay is only 10 quid though :-)

    Amenities were clean.
    Staff were friendly.
    Nice rural setting.

    Disliked:

The flattest pitches were taken so had to pitch on a slight slope.
Generally everyone quietened down after 11 at night.
Other's barbecue smoke was unpleasant at times.
The odd dog barking in the middle of the night.
Would have liked a refund when I left 2 nights early.

Simple and cheap done well. Pitch up and camp where you like, pay the friendly staff in the morning. Clean toilet blocks with charging and washing facilities. Nice farm location for the 'proper' and camping experience. Cool chickens and a cockerel.

    Disliked:

Down some very tight lanes which I didn't mind but some might be put off by.

Local attractions

For stuff to do nearby try a visit to the historic village of Cockington, three miles away, where there's a manor house and a cricket ground plus some 16th-century thatched stone cottages and a traditional pub serving cream teas.

The award-winning caves of Kents Cavern – once home to prehistoric humans – are also within easy reach of Treacle Valley; this subterranean network lies close to some spectacularly scenic coastal areas with several walking routes along Torbay's UNESCO Global Geopark – one of only seven in the UK.

A walk around Babbacombe coves and cliffs begins at Anstey's Cove (opposite Kents Cavern), to wind its way along a scenic track and bring you out into the pretty village of Babbacombe in Torquay; take a ride on the famed Babbacombe Cliff Railway, then follow up with a wander around four acres of award-winning gardens showcasing hundreds of model scenes and railways at Babbacombe Model Village.

Take the kids on an animal adventure to explore the marine displays of Living Coasts coastal zoo and the enclosures of Paignton Zoo, both within six miles, or visit the seaside towns of Torquay, Newton Abbot, Paignton or Totnes for miniature golf, arcades, ice cream shops and beaches.
