  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area
Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell. As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner. There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course… but not before kicking back for a bit on site… Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre. All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely little site which is very pretty and superbly well looked after. Shower block is clean and modern and includes a washing up area. Has a communal room with pool table etc. The fenced dog walking area on site was ideal and the benches to sit on in it were a nice touch. Shop stocks a selection of food and drink and also a good range of travel accessories.

Disliked A little bit of road noise but absolutely not an issue as it’s not a busy road.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Very clean, lots of amenities, dog park is a great addition as are the picnic benches, overall really great place

Disliked If I had to put anything it would be that there is nothing in walking distance (other than the farm shop) but this didn’t effect our stay

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your great review. With regards to places within walking distance. You are sent a Local to us document 3 days before arrival with local places and local walks with a map. You can walk from the campsite to the local community pub The Drewe Arms on your way to Castle Drogo and Fingle Bridge. However we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. Best wishes from Leigh and David

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked This site is lovely, well laid out, great views and the toilet block is superb. It's well placed for touring round, and very easy to get to. There is a farm shop that's a 1 minute walk across a field, but it is no longer a cafe.

Disliked This isn't a dislike but when we were there the reception was always closed. The owner was never far away and helped us with some suggestions on eating out, but we would probably have popped in and bought a few things if it looked more open.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for your kind review. We do tell people on arrival that we are not manned and to ring the doorbell. We are always around the park somewhere. Best wishes from Leigh and David.

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool. There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges. History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive. Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
