  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area
Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell. As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner. There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course… but not before kicking back for a bit on site… Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre. All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Immaculately clean. Really good spaces with picnic benches. Trees on the pitches which helped provide shade. Perfect location to be able to travel to lots of nearby attractions and beaches. Quiet hours that were adhered to. Would have given it a 10 but took one star off as we have been to places that are more dog friendly this year. That would have been the icing on the cake.

Disliked Not a dislike but I would avoid pitches near the septic tank as it can get a bit smelly. Tents had to be up by 6pm which wasn't great in hot weather with dogs (we were hoping to take them somewhere cool until it cooled down in the evening).

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to leave us a nice review. Sadly with the heat that we have had (having) and as it is our busy season there is not much more that we can do with the tank. Just to be clear that we ask for people to be checked-in and tents up by 6pm so that we can make sure that you are in the correct place for our fire regulations. There are only two of us who work 7 days a week which is why 6pm is our latest check-in. We did make sure that you had a pitch with trees for shade, but sadly in this heat there isn't much else we can do. However we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay so much so that you extended your stay with us. Best wishes from Leigh and David

Liked Very clean, helpful staff, good facilities. Spacious pitches, nice little shop.

Disliked Some road noise, showers and taps turn off a bit quick. The smell from the septic tank was off-putting.

Aires overnight (roadside) electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Nice spacious pitches, good clean facilities, friendly helpful staff, good value. Easy access to A30. Lovely (hilly) walk to Drewsteignton and Fingle Bridge.
Farm shop, and donkeys nearby.

Disliked Road noise, dog barking at night.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to leave us a kind review. We are sorry that you didn't speak to us about the dog barking or we would have spoken to the owners. With regards to the road noise you did book an Aires Roadside Pitch which is why it is the lowest priced pitch on site as it is closer to the roadside. However we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you would visit again. Best wishes from Leigh and David.

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool. There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges. History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive. Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
