  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area
Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell. As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner. There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course… but not before kicking back for a bit on site… Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre. All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: The site is very easily accessible from the A30. The warden was extremely welcoming and friendly. The site is immaculately kept and the toilet block is extremely clean and modern. Quiet and friendly site. We loved it and will definitely return.

Disliked: My only criticism concern the shower. The rose is extremely high so the water sprays everywhere and shoes get wet if you don’t put them in the seat. A shower curtain would solve this!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks June for your great review. With regards to the showers you can adjust the nozzle in the shower head. We hope to see you again. Best wishes from Leigh and David.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Excellent second stay (first time was a few years before they became adult only). We travelled with our converted van and awning. Great site, spotlessly clean! Well organised, friendly and perfect facilities. We took our dogs for their first van experience and the enclosed field was perfect for toilet breaks and zooming around. A beautiful site, great location for lots of exploring of dartmoor and countryside walking locations.

Its amazing and we will be back!! Thank you all!

Disliked: Nothing it was perfect for us being so quiet, well situated and dog friendly.

From the manager: Oh Donna thank you for such a fabulous review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and that your lovely doggies enjoyed our dog field. We look forward to seeing you again in the future. Best wishes from Leigh and David.

Aires overnight (roadside) power optional cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked: Fantastic little site! Clean, modern, lovely wash room facilities and a nice little shop should you need any last min things. I am really fussy and have to say I was really glad we chose this site. On arrival the couple who own and run the site were really friendly and their hard work reflects in the quality of the site. Dog friendly as well with a great little gated dog area where you can let the dogs run freely whilst enjoying a beautiful views across the rolling hills. If you fancy it…there’s a 20 min walk to a lovely pub next to a church that serves great food and drink in a stunning setting.i’ll be asking for the same spot next time:-)

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: This is our second time there and was made very welcome. The grounds are kept so clean, the toilets and shower block are immaculate . So much room in between pitches. Definitely one of the best places we have been too. Our fur babies absolutely loved the dog run. We can truly say we love it at Barley Meadow and that it is such a credit to the husband and wife team running it. We are back there in August and have booked for next year aswell

Disliked: Nothing

From the manager: Cheers Mark for such a fantastic review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. We look forward to seeing you all again in August. Best wishes from Leigh and David.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Everything! Plenty of loos, showers, wash up areas and all immaculately clean whenever I went to visit for whatever reason. Loved the dog exercise area, loved the view, loved our site loved my short walk to the farm shop. I put down the success of this site to the fact that the owners are very much in evidence and it shows. They also clearly know how to lead their team. Probably one of the best campsites I’ve been to in UK.

Liked: Cleanliness of the site, welcoming staff, clean toilet and shower facilities, secure entry and exit, free wifi

Disliked: Adjacent to busy road but that didn't bother us

From the manager: Many thanks for your kind review. Yes. Sadly the road was far noisier than normal as Highways England closed the A30 during the evenings. We are very sorry about this, but are pleased to see that you would return. Best wishes from Leigh and David.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: The facilities were very clean and good

Disliked: The site is far too close to the main road so vehicle noise was heard throughout the night. The site is actually immediately adjacent to the road. We would not return to this campsite

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Just to put into context for people to understand. When you arrived for your two night stay with us we were very apologetic to you as we informed you that Highways England had decided to close both sides of the A30 between 8pm-6am for emergency work to be done. This was completely out of our control, we also informed you that we had been give NO notice of this.
We did do our very best to make sure that you had bushes and hedges around you to try and keep some of the noise at bay. Sadly though when you are in a tent there is very little to keep any noise out! On a normal night the road is normally very quiet and we are very sorry that you did not get to experience that. We are very sad to see that you have scored us a 1/10 for value for money as I don't think you would find anywhere in this local area for the same price. We are a little confused as to why you have scored the accommodation a 2/10 as this is your tent?!! Thank you for your 10/10 for the cleanliness we do appreciate this. We are sorry that the diversion made your stay with us so bad. We made a formal complaint with Highways England as soon as we found out about the diversion and we have even spoken to our local MP about this. We do ask if it was that bad please make a complaint to Highways England and Devon County Council. Best wishes from Leigh and David.

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool. There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges. History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive. Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
