Barley Meadow Touring Park: The top road

General

  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area

Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell.

As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner.

There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course… but not before kicking back for a bit on site… Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre.

All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

Please note

Units longer than 8 metres are not allowed.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Bookings must not be for more than 21 consecutive nights.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Tents and units with awnings are allowed on the grass pitches for maximum 7 nights.

'Stealth' campervans are not allowed on-site: commercial vehicles must be fully converted to campervan and have side and rear windows.

Everything! Friendly staff, pitch size, showers and toilets kept clean. Dog walking area was great too. The shop was useful too especially as they sold alcohol (great local cider was particularly good).
Farm shop and cafe only yards away which was very useful for bbq etc.
super walks from site along country lanes and plenty of things to do in the area too.
Weather was excellent, which also helped.
Would definitely recommend and would go back again. Very reasonable priced too.

Super clean with large pitches and not sat on neighbours laps. Owners very pleasant and friendly. Always working hard to keep site in tip condition.
Staff at Farm shop and cafe in adjacent field superb and always chatty and happy.

    Disliked:

We came with 2 springer spaniels but found this site didn't meet our needs even though there was a nice little separate dog walking field, it wasn't enough to take for a good walk to please energetic dogs. There was nothing around except a dog walking facility less than a mile away which was charged for a minimum use of 30 minutes which we didn't do so won't comment on it to much. The country road was quite busy so dangerous to walk dogs down although there was an accident on the Saturday which meant all the main road traffic was deverted along this road which cannot be helped, the owner even took time out to everyone to apologize but that wasn't their fault.

From the manager...

Gosh we are so sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay with us. You did book an Aires roadside pitch, so sadly you are closer to the road. And as you said there had been an accident on one of the days. We do send out as much information about our park and local area including walks from the park which even gives you a colour coded map. This shows you that you have to walk on lanes. We are sorry that you felt you needed to mark us so low considering this. It is very disappointing that although you have said we are a nice site that you wouldn't recommend us. Not really sure what else we could of done. Best wishes from Team Barley Meadow.

Lovely clean site with a small enclosed dog exercise area. Wonderfully welcoming site team who always went out of their way to check things were OK. Easy access to the site. Good free wifi.

    Disliked:

Long walk to get to public footpaths along narrow country roads with limited passing places - but there is a bus service which would avoid that.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. That is a shame that you didn't enjoy your bus experience. Many people love the fact that they can get this from our entrance. We are pleased to see that this has not put you off returning. Best wishes from Team Barley meadow.

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool.

There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges.

History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive.

Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
