Around the site

General

  • Scenic and dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, games room and secure off-lead dog area

Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a family- and dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Exeter village of Crockernwell.

As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton.

There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course... but not before kicking back for a bit on site.... Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or pass some time in the small games room before getting back to scenic wanders – this time along country lanes to the thatched haven of Drewsteignton village.

All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

We planned to stay three nights but extended our visit for almost a week because we were enjoying our visit so much with many things to do in the area. The campsite is immaculate, the location convenient not just for Exeter but for wonderful walks on the northern moors near Okehampton and Gidleigh including the ancient Grim's Pound, and visits to Castle Drogo (restoration nearly completed, house now open) and Powderham. The library of books was a bonus, and games for children a nice touch. The owner couldn't be more helpful, and having a new farm shop and cafe across the field is very useful (longer opening hours in school holidays). We hope to return!

    Disliked:

    Nothing.

From the manager...

That's a smashing review and I am sure will help future visitors with respect to all the local things to see and do, thank you so much! Martin

Ever so slight feedback and definitely not a 'dislike' but the grass pitches have very bright site lights next to the electrical hook up. This on a night time was bright enough to illuminate the inside of the tent, which had black out interior!

From the manager...

Thanks so much for the fantastic review. The lighting you mention are supposed to create some very subtle park lighting, in fact we only have 5 of them across the entire park (2 on the tent areas) - you can turn off the lights individually - I will give this some thought and really appreciate your honest feedback, noted :-)

From the moment we got to the site we loved it, owners/staff were friendly and helpful, the site was clean and tidy, with a small games room with pool table (take plenty of 50p's) and games to keep the kids entertained, the shower block was fresh and modern looking, on site was a well stocked shop, and a lovely dog exercise area complete with bench overlooking fields. To top things off just over the field via pathway a farm shop and cafe so no need to cook your own breakfast.

Brilliant thank you the cafe is certainly a great new addition to the area and to our park, cheers for another 10/10, Martin

We chose this campsite for it’s easy location to get to the north of Dartmoor National Park for 2 nights initially (and extended by another night). The campsite is spotless...lovely large well managed and flat pitches, excellent facilities, very clean and new shower and toilet block....was great that can freeze ice blocks for our lunches too! The owners were very nice and friendly and helpful too! Oh and I loved saying morning to the local cows! We will come back and stay here again when we return to Dartmoor!

    Disliked:

    Nothing.

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool.

There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges.

History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive.

Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
