  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area
Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutesā€™ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell. As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutesā€™ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutesā€™ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner. Thereā€™s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of courseā€¦ but not before kicking back for a bit on siteā€¦ Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre. All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the siteā€™s central and easy to reach: itā€™s just off the A30, and thereā€™s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

Aires overnight (roadside) electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely tidy clean place well set up. Very helpful staff. My only reason for saying that I wouldn't stay again is because we go for the dog walking and this is made more difficult with a motorhome for parking.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: I've returned to Barley Meadow because it's a great place to relax and unwind in beautiful surroundings. For a single traveller like myself, the adult-only aspect is a bonus. The hosts are extremely good, you always get a friendly welcome and they are very helpful. The pitches are very generous and well-kept. Spotless facilities. 'The Bothy' is a nice touch; a communal building with a pool table, a selection of books and games and access to a fridge freeze and charging points. My dog loves the area set aside for him and his pals and the views from there are stunning. Lovely site and great valur=e for money.

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Friendly staff with a well kept site Clean toilet/shower block And a well stocked shop for caravan dogs and humans. Good for short breaks as well positioned with easy access from road.

Disliked: We were positioned between two pitches that had dogs that were an issue. Weā€™re were told about one sides dogs that were reactive to people passing and noises but the dog on the other side had a high pitched bark and constantly barked whined etc even when owners were there but out of sight. If we had been staying longer we wouldnā€™t have as it spoilt any relaxation time. We do have dogs but this dog was unbearable to be situated beside.

From the manager: Many thanks for your review. We are sorry that other people's dogs spoilt your stay with us. So much so that you wouldn't return to us. Best wishes from us all at Barley Meadow.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Very friendly welcome from the owners. This is a very professionally run site. Everything is spotless. Facilities are great. On site shop is a lovely touch. The best thing is location. Come here if you want to start your day with a good hot shower, go out and explore, and come back for unsettled sleep.

Disliked: There is road noise during the day but it is peaceful at night. Although in a scenic place there are no views from the site itself.

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the canā€™t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) ā€“ donā€™t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devilā€™s Cauldron whirlpool. There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges. History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the cityā€™s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive. Poke around Englandā€™s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
