Barley Meadow Touring Park: The top road

General

  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area

Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell.

As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner.

There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course… but not before kicking back for a bit on site… Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre.

All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

Please note

Units longer than 8 metres are not allowed.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Bookings must not be for more than 21 consecutive nights.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Tents and units with awnings are allowed on the grass pitches for maximum 7 nights.

'Stealth' campervans are not allowed on-site: commercial vehicles must be fully converted to campervan and have side and rear windows.

Beautiful site with spacious pitches and lovely trees for shade when needed. The nearness of water taps made things much easier and facilities were very modern and clean . Pleasant enclosed dog walk with lovely views of Dartmoor. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the shop catered for basic needs. The nearby Farm Shop and cafe were a real asset and we enjoyed breakfast there on two of our four days stay. Being adults only meant the site was very peaceful. It was good to see tents pitched too. Barley Meadows is an excellent site and we would not hesitate in recommending it.
Exploring the local area was very enjoyable, from the river walk in the grounds of Castle Drogo where you can walk to Fingle Bridge to Chagford which is a beautiful characterful village with attractive pubs and shops. An hour away is Bude and we had a lovely swim in the sea pool. Very pleasant for our canine friends.

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool.

There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges.

History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive.

Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
