  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area
Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell. As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner. There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course… but not before kicking back for a bit on site… Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre. All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Small, clean, friendly place.

Disliked I asked for somewhere quiet and was put near the main entrance with noisy neighbours and a yappy dog. I was told it was too busy and nowhere was very quiet, but when I walked around later after reception was closed I saw many better spots that were free. Also quite close to a road and has regular traffic.

From the manager: Thank you for your review.
With regards to your booking. You booked the day before your arrival with a request of a quiet pitch. However on arrival (you arrived at 13:17) whilst we checked you in we discussed that the campsite is in a horse shoe style shape and that all of our Grass Pitches are in the middle with all the Hard Standing Pitches around the outside. So wherever you were pitched you would have people around you. You also stated to us that the reason for wanting to be somewhere quiet was because you stay up late and have a sliding door on your camper. You also stated that you had had complaints about this on other sites. You were placed 3 pitches away from the entrance with the pitch giving you a hedge and bushes to make it as quiet and private as possible. We also made sure that you didn't have people next to you. It is such a shame that if you were so unhappy with your pitch that after arriving at 13:17 you did not walk around the campsite till after 18:00. If you had spoken to us and had found a pitch which you would have preferred we could have accommodated this. But you did not give us this chance, you decided to leave a bad review instead. As for the road this give our campsite fantastic access, but this does mean that cars will pass by our site. Sadly the campsite/us can't control the road. We rate ourselves on being a very dog friendly site and sadly dogs bark. It sounds like you would be better doing more research and finding a campsite in the middle of nowhere with only a few pitches and that don't allow dogs. We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. Best wishes from Leigh and David.

FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Spotlessly clean and well spaced pitches. Easy access which is important for us as we have a twin axle 8ft wide caravan. Free wifi.

Disliked The showers were nice and hot with a separate dressing area but it was a bit small and water sprayed into the dressing area

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool. There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges. History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive. Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
