Barley Meadow Touring Park: Towards the exit

General

  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area

Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell.

As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner.

There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course… but not before kicking back for a bit on site… Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre.

All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

This campsite was immaculate, big, bold signage at the entrance, there was no way we could miss it, very easy to find. The pitch was level and well looked after, no mud, potholes or overgrowth. Lovely Christmassy feel with lights on bushes and trees. The moment we walked into the inviting reception, we knew this place was perfect. Lovely young couple with a warm welcome, Lee and David, who work very hard and were available at all times offering help and local knowledge. Great informative pack given on arrival, with maps, walks and local attractions. Toilets, showers and wash areas were immaculate and cleaning was carried out regularly. Every area of this site was neat and tidy right down to the grass and planting. Very quiet night and day, we ended up spending an extra night at short notice as we didn't want to leave. Bus stop outside, enabling travel to lots of lovely places. Perfect campsite, best one we have stayed at. Well done to a lovely couple, keep up your good work, hope you get many rewards for your hard work and dedication.

This is a beautiful little site , it is quiet and immaculately kept. We went for NY and the site was tastefully decorated.
The toilet block is spotless and new and could not fault the place.
The couple that manage the site are a pleasure to deal with and are so helpful. Would definitely recommend to all my friends and will return perhaps for a summer visit.

Leigh was very efficient checking us in. She made us feel most welcome.
We were given plenty of literature explaining the site and also local tourist information, which was helpful.
The site was immaculate all hedges trimmed and pitch was of a good size with electric and water and level.
The facilities including toilets /showers were modern and spotlessly clean.
    It was lovely and quiet.
Being Christmas, reception and onsite shop although closed was avaliable to us every morning when Leigh and David greeted us all and checked the site.
The local farm shop and cafe were definitely worth a visit.
We would definitely visit the park again

Cleanliness of site was first class with smart modern shower, chemical toilet and wash facilities. Easy access just off the A30 but with little road noise. Security first class with site wide CCTV and ANPR barrier controlled access. All pitches benefit from all year round usable hard standings (We had fully serviced Pitch No. 1). Easy check in in stocked reception shop. Fenced off dedicated dog walk for the pooches. Nice to see decent site wide free wifi all included in the pitch cost. Site staff very welcoming, will be looking to return very soon. I wish all sites were this good..

The trip was our first ever caravan experience, so the very friendly welcome from the managers who offered their help and expertise, was welcome. The fully serviced, level pitch was great with hedges around to improve privacy. The toilets, showers and washing up spaces were immaculate. Everything was very well maintained.
A great start to our caravaning experience and a place we will revisit and hope for better weather next time!

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool.

There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges.

History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive.

Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
