  • Old-fashioned site with modern facilities
  • A 10-minute walk to beach, dunes and nature reserve of Dawlish Warren
  • Seven acres of grassland in a secluded setting
Old-style camping with new-style facilities, 10 minutes' walk from the Devon coastline and 25 minutes from a 500-acre nature reserve stuffed with species of all sorts… You might want two weeks (at least) at Leadstone Camping in Dawlish Warren, 15 minutes' drive away from Teignmouth and 35 minutes from Torquay. This very friendly site, which has been around since 1974, one of those where the staff do their utmost to make sure guests have the nicest time possible: although this is traditional and uncommercialised camping, standards are modern, including a redeveloped amenities block with showers, toilets, hot water basins, a hairdryer, baby changing unit and an accessible room with shower, toilet and wash basin. Leadstone also has a launderette, playground, washing-up facilities and water points in the pitching fields. For other supplies and nosh, a supermarket is a mile away, and anyone walking the 10 minutes to Dawlish Warren will find a pub serving lunch and evening meals handily placed along the way. It's also possible to walk to the South West Coast Path within 10 minutes or walk/cycle around half a mile to the Exe Cycle Trail or the circular six-mile Dawlish Discovery Walk.

Fox electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked Great views, site manager friendly, facilities immaculate, short walk to beach and generally flat pitches.

Disliked 20p to use shower and I didn’t read this on the info when I booked it so had no change when I got there. Perhaps I missed it or it’s not clear enough. No bother. Went and got change.

Owl electric grass touring pitch (XL)

Liked Quiet and clean. Friendly staff.

Disliked Other campers’ flashing fairy lights left on overnight

There could be a light curfew like there is a noise curfew. The stargazing would have been wonderful but for the flashing fairy lights around pitches. It is September not Christmas. On
All night

Badger electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked Very friendly site the facilities ok but dated with 20p machines for shower
No dog walking on site has been provided. The use of another campsite across the road is permitted!! The lady with the bacon rolls is extremely good entertainment some time is provided which finishes at a reasonable time
Unfortunately Dawlish and Dawlish Warren has now become very sea defence oriented

Disliked No dog walking on site
20p for shower not reflected in pitch fee
Facilities starting to look dated

Owl electric grass touring pitch (XL)

Liked Lovely site and Glen was very accommodating. Loved the Amanda's food hut, nice touch. Great for needing a bacon bap when the weather isn't great. The live outdoor entertainment went down well, great for a summer evening, especially when the fresh pizzas were being made.

Local attractions

Leadstone Camping's location makes it easy to get to most of Devon's attractions and it's simple to get from the site to wherever takes your fancy. Roads are relatively quiet for most of the year, apart from in high season. A mile away is the Exe estuary – another top local spot and a hit for fishing, hiking, biking and birdwatching – and the town of Dawlish itself is a mile and a half away: look out for the famous black swans. Also nearby is the harbour and two good pubs at Cockwood, two and a half miles away, and golf at Starcross before taking the ferry from here to Exmouth. Shaldon (15 minutes) has another golf course and can be reached by ferry from the busy resort of Teignmouth. For towns, take off to Exminster (20 minutes; more golf), Torquay (40 minutes), Newton Abbot (half an hour; racecourse and ancient market), Exeter (40 minutes) and Paignton (40 minutes; take the steam railway from here to Kingswear and Dartmouth).
