  • Friendly 16-acre site on a mixed farm two miles from Axminster
  • A 15-minute drive from the coast at Lyme Regis and Seaton
  • Access to fishing on the 1.5-acre lake, with kit hire available
Fancy having a gander at unusual animals but don’t quite have the budget for a trip abroad somewhere exotic? Rock up instead to Rhea Farm and Fishery, a friendly Devon site with a sizeable collection of creatures including rheas, emus, ostriches, goats, sheep and a giant tortoise. This 16-acre park, mainly made up of forest and pasture land just outside the village of Kilmington, also has a fab 1.5-acre fishing lake stocked with rudd, tench, barbel and mirror carp, plus lots of little fish for kids who’d like to have a go with the rod. There's a daily charge for fishing, and you can bring your own kit or hire it on site. There are usually plenty of friendly folk around to help you get set up if you’ve not done it before. In line with the rural feel of this site a couple of miles from Axminster, the eco-friendly staff encourage recycling and the place creates its own hot water for showers using waste wood and bits harvested from around its forest area. Solar-powered lamps provide light for the shower and toilet facilities, and batteries can be charged on base. When heading out, the region is a fine option for walks both country and coastal: it’s in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and around a 15-minute drive from the coast at Lyme Regis and Seaton. Foodie folk may also like to use the farm as a base for dining or courses at telly chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage HQ. For more modest meals, a couple of pubs and a farm shop are within walking distance.

What customers say

Rhea Farm and Fishery is praised for its friendly, welcoming owners and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. Guests enjoyed the abundance of animals, including morning feeding sessions, and the fishing lake. Facilities are described as clean and well-maintained, with some noting the "off-grid" nature of the site. Entertainment on Saturday evenings, including a party bus, was popular. Occasional minor issues included noise from animals and, in one instance, busy facilities. The site is recommended for those seeking a peaceful, nature-focused getaway.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Very much liked our stay at Rhea Farm with extended family. The site was a lot bigger than I thought, the grass well kept and good pitches, some shady, some sunny, some pitches on the flat and some on slightly sloped ground. The site is off the grid although you can use solar panels and also they provide lockable baskets where you can charge your phones etc, take a small padlock. The toilets and showers were basic but clean and most people on the site appeared to be respect each others space, i.e. no late night music etc. The hosts offered a good nights entertainment on the Bank Holiday weekend, i.e. Saturday which included Pizza, crisps, home made wine which was very nice and a bit of music. This started at 4.30 and ended at 8.30 and was good fun. There are a number of animals kept and looked after on site and it took me back to the days when I use to go on on caravan holidays with my mum and dad on farm sites. The village of Killmington is a very short walk away and is worthy of a good look round and does include a pub, The New Inn. Enjoyable weekend and found the owners to be very friendly and helpful.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had a fantastic stay and would highly recommend this site to anyone looking for a relaxed, family‑friendly getaway. There’s an abundance of wildlife and farm animals on site, which the whole family absolutely loved. The owners are incredibly welcoming and friendly, and they were brilliant with the kids — they even did a little morning walk‑and‑talk so the children could meet and learn about the animals, which was a real highlight.

On the Saturday evening there was a great party from 4:30 to 8:30, with food and drink included free of charge, which created such a lovely atmosphere. Logs and fire starters were available to buy at a small cost, making it easy to enjoy a cosy fire.

The pitches are well spaced out, so it never felt cramped, and the facilities are very good for an off‑grid site — four toilets and four showers, all clean and in good condition. The location is also ideal for days out in the local area.

Overall, a brilliant experience for families and anyone who enjoys nature, friendly hosts, and a peaceful setting. We’ll definitely be returning.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Friendliness of owner. The setting and the views. Cleanliness of loos. Lots of hot water. Kids got to feed the animals. The cooling pathway through the trees was very calming and cooling on an intensely hot day.

Disliked Old cars and rusty speedboat gives a tatty look. It makes what is rustic look run down.
The cockerel at dawn is one thing, but the peacock through the night is another.

Local attractions

A handful of zoo-inspired attractions are within an easy drive of this site if the critters on base have you wanting to amble with more animals. Visit Axe Valley Wildlife Park (15 minutes’ walk) for a glimpse of the meerkats, zebras and flamingos; you’ll also be within spitting distance of Little Orchard Alpacas (five minutes’ drive) from Rhea Farm and Fishery. Kids are generally keen on the zoo at Crealy Theme Park (35 minutes) too, which has 60 attractions, rides and shows as well as countless creatures to gaze at, and a bit of fossil hunting at Charmouth beach (15 minutes) never goes amiss with young geologists in the making. If your tiddlers strive to be spelunkers rather than scientists, perhaps a trip to Beer Quarry Caves (20 minutes) might suit? Amateur anglers, meanwhile, have sea-fishing trips from Lyme Regis (15 minutes) at their fingertips. Travellers with no tiddlers in tow can take full advantage by touring the Lyme Bay Winery (10 minutes) or setting off for boozy lunches in the seaside town of Seaton (15 minutes).
