  • Friendly 16-acre site on a mixed farm two miles from Axminster
  • A 15-minute drive from the coast at Lyme Regis and Seaton
  • Access to fishing on the 1.5-acre lake, with kit hire available
Fancy having a gander at unusual animals but don’t quite have the budget for a trip abroad somewhere exotic? Rock up instead to Rhea Farm and Fishery, a friendly Devon site with a sizeable collection of creatures including rheas, emus, ostriches, goats, sheep and a giant tortoise. This 16-acre park, mainly made up of forest and pasture land just outside the village of Kilmington, also has a fab 1.5-acre fishing lake stocked with rudd, tench, barbel and mirror carp, plus lots of little fish for kids who’d like to have a go with the rod. There's a daily charge for fishing, and you can bring your own kit or hire it on site. There are usually plenty of friendly folk around to help you get set up if you’ve not done it before. In line with the rural feel of this site a couple of miles from Axminster, the eco-friendly staff encourage recycling and the place creates its own hot water for showers using waste wood and bits harvested from around its forest area. Solar-powered lamps provide light for the shower and toilet facilities, and batteries can be charged on base. When heading out, the region is a fine option for walks both country and coastal: it’s in the East Devon National Landscape and around a 15-minute drive from the coast at Lyme Regis and Seaton. Foodie folk may also like to use the farm as a base for dining or courses at telly chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage HQ. For more modest meals, a couple of pubs and a farm shop are within walking distance.

What customers say

Rhea Farm and Fishery gets props for its friendly owners, farm animals for kids, and a fishing lake. Clean, well-kept facilities. Guests love the chill vibe, roomy spots, and the Saturday night party bus. A few mentions of rules and animal noise. Great for families, many plan to come back.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked A wonderful campsite with equally perfect owners. So friendly and welcoming. Our kids loved helping with the animals in the morning and there was so much to do and see in the evening after our day out and about in the local area. The facilities were lovely and clean. We will definitely be back next year.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We have had are second fantastic holiday at this campsite. First time taking are son and he said it’s the best holiday he’s had
Love the whole atmosphere friendly owners Lisa and Andy are amazing at running everything so it goes smoothly. Our son has not stopped talking about his morning animal feeding with Lisa so kind of her. Showers and amenities are incredibly clean and comfortable. Loved the community feel of the pizza bus party night which was was optional down by the lake

The location is great with a farm shop near by and great local pub. We also enjoyed exploring bays close by such as Lyme Regis

We wil definitely be back thank you to Andy and Lisa for creating a place so special. A big thank you from Thomas to Lisa as well for his animal feeding experiences every morning

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We've just returned from a lovely 3 nights at Rhea Farm and fishery. There are 4 of us (2 adults and 13yr old, 16 yr old). This is a campsite with a difference. Lisa and Andy really go the extra mile to make sure visitors are happy and their energy is contagious. The site is a quiet site, yet on a Saturday night everyone is invited to free pizza, crisps and drinks at the 'party bus'. There is a bus where darts, pool, table tennis (maybe take your own balls) and card games are available if it's raining or kids need some entertaining. The tent pitch we had was probably the flattest we've ever had camping and there was a good choice of pitches with lots of space. We were lucky enough to get a picnic table. Showers were hot and we never had to queue for toilets or showers, although it was a quiet weekend. We tried fishing as a family, which we'd never done before and, after hiring rods etc, we had lots of advice from Andy, Lisa and nearby fishermen to get going. The lake is well stocked so it was a great place to learn. My son loved the fishing and our daughter loved going off on the golf cart with Lisa for the morning animal feeding. If you're a light sleeper perhaps take some ear plugs, as the peacocks, ostrich and emus (think it was them) create an interesting dawn chorus-not that it really bothered us! Although it's not next to a beach, it's not far in the car to local beaches. We swam at Beer beach a couple of days and also had a good lunch at the (free) Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth. Overall a really lovely campsite and we will definitely be back.

Local attractions

A handful of zoo-inspired attractions are within an easy drive of this site if the critters on base have you wanting to amble with more animals. For starters, you’ll be within spitting distance of Little Orchard Alpacas (five minutes’ drive) from Rhea Farm and Fishery. Kids are generally keen on the zoo at Crealy Theme Park (35 minutes) too, which has 60 attractions, rides and shows as well as countless creatures to gaze at, and a bit of fossil hunting at Charmouth beach (15 minutes) never goes amiss with young geologists in the making. If your tiddlers strive to be spelunkers rather than scientists, perhaps a trip to Beer Quarry Caves (20 minutes) might suit? Amateur anglers, meanwhile, have sea-fishing trips from Lyme Regis (15 minutes) at their fingertips. Travellers with no tiddlers in tow can take full advantage by touring the Lyme Bay Winery (10 minutes) or setting off for boozy lunches in the seaside town of Seaton (15 minutes).
