  • Cornish estate set around a 17th-century mansion
  • Heated pool (in July/August), library, writing room and regular events
  • A 36-acre woodland and garden setting, with spotless amenities
Verily, you’ll very much like Trewan Hall Camping Site, between Padstow and Newquay in mid-Cornwall. This lovely little place has been developed on an old Cornish estate around the 17th-century mansion of Trewan Hall, and carefully maintained with traditional building techniques to blend in with its 36-acre woodland and garden surroundings. And speaking of gardens, they’re lush – have a look at the site pics… The Hill family has added all sorts of little touches to make this a top family site, like entertainment varying from local rock/brass bands to shows in the Long Barn in the summer holidays, all professional and free of charge, and the 25-metre heated open-air pool (only open in July and August, with a dome to cover it over if the weather's a tad chilly). Available at all times are a large field for ball games in front of the Hall, barns for table tennis, a barn with pool table set aside for teenagers and adults, and a library and writing room. A fully-stocked shop is open nearly 14 hours a day in high season (and shorter hours in low season). There are two different areas to pick a pitch from: one aimed at families near the play park, shop and barns, and the other more secluded in a bigger field – in both, you can pitch up where you like to have plenty of room, with the owners managing bookings so that there are always more pitches than people and what’s on offer never feels overcrowded. Trewan Hall also has a woodland playground.

The site therefore cannot guarantee if the pool will be covered or uncovered during your stay.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: A very beautiful setting. In the summer season there is an abundance of things to do for adults and children

Disliked: We visited beginning of September so the pool was closed, which was a shame. I do understand why and there are beaches close so still had my swim

Liked: We where revisiting Trewan after many years absence indeed our last stay had been when our Daughter 5. So 30 year's plus ! We decided to stay after the schools returned and where delighted to find the site peaceful (exception of farm opposite activities, see disliked). The Hall and grounds were super and immaculate. Toilet and shower facilities at the time of our arrival and stay in Calfes Meadow were fine even though not all were open, I guess due to limited number of low Season guests. Little shop with again reduced opening due to Season. The Hall and exchange Library is a great idea and games are available to borrow 4 your stay f.o.c. The spaciousness is delightful that surrounds you and Dog walking is good. Generally on site nothing to dislike, as the Hall can't control external activities. Will deff return.

Disliked: Motor and engine droning from the activities happening at the Farm opposite accompanied by fumes from early morning until around 5 30 pm daily. The road behind the pitches at the top if the pitches was also busy with activities so do not stay at the top end of the Meadow if you're after peace! Our Son in Law is a Farmer so we are sympathetic but wish we'd been warned. It was disappointing as the weather was fantastic during our stay that the pool which was covered was not open but we were aware that might have been the case.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Large camping field in the grounds of a country hall. Pretty lawned area and garden to the front of the hall surrounded by wooded areas. Clean shower and toilet facilities, a couple of family bathrooms - 1 with a bath, and covered pot washing area. Small shop with seasonal opening hours. Looks to have lots of events in the school holidays - v quiet out of season. Friendly staff.

Disliked: The pool was closed during a heatwave !- only open July and August. Constant background road noise from the A39 - sadly due to a noise intolerant other half we will not visit again ( although i would!)

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Not much

Disliked: Very noisy campsite with loud music being played until well passed 12 o’clock. There were no camp ground man around to enforce the rules so people did things that were clearly against the rules. The showers and toilets were dirty and the light sensor was very short so if having a shower at night be quick else the lights will turn off. The whole of the tent pitch is on a camber too with no level pitches.

From the manager: Thanks for the feedback, we are very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay here. We always ask that noise is reported so we can deal with it as its happening, we aim to be a quiet and calm site in low season so I am very sorry that's not the experience you got. The toilets are cleaned regularly and we had no other negative comments during this time, again I'm sorry that they weren't up to standard but please do let us know when you are here so we have a chance to improve things for you.

Liked: Lovely grounds to walk round

Disliked: Could hear quite alot of noise from band playing Pool, table tennis and darts had no items to be able to play Would have been nice to use pool as weather was still nice

From the manager: Hi Alison, Thanks for taking the time to leave us some feedback. Just wanted to say for future visits that the equipment for using the pool table, darts and table tennis can all be found in the Camp Shop or by talking to a member of staff if its closed, The swimming pool is sadly not open in low season as our seasonal staff finish at the end of August, but our lower rates reflect the facilities we have at the time of visit.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Really nice camp site , quiet, well it was when we went 2nd Sep. Powered pitch, helpful check in , and i would return. Note though, I fail to see when 3/4 full never mind 100% full how people would cope with the Lack of showers, toilets. They were clean so no issues , but i think there was 5 showers, ( May have this wrong) but no were near enough to cope with the amount of pitches available. Also a little on the expensive side if I was honest.

Disliked: Not enough shower block/ toilets available, a little on the expensive side

Local attractions

Trewan Hall is near the centre of Cornwall with easy access to the north coast beaches and within easy driving distance of most of Cornwall’s attractions. For a short stroll, head into the old market town of St Columb Major a mile away, where there’s a 15th-century church, surf store, antique shop and fish and chip shops galore. Sand fans will be in heaven in this part of Cornwall: the closest beach to Trewan Hall is Mawgan Porth, four miles away; gorgeous Watergate Bay is 10 minutes’ drive away, or head to the Seven Bays clustered around the village of St Merryn, a few miles from Padstow and within 15 to 20 minutes’ drive of the site. Two top Cornwall spots within 10 miles are Newquay, where you should wriggle into your wetsuit for some of the best surfing in the country (surf schools are all over town and nearby for the uninitiated), and Padstow for the Camel Trail and Camel Estuary Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Zipwires, biodomes and more can be had at the Eden Project 15 miles away.
