Trewan Hall Camping Site: Our non-electric field Barn Park.

General

  • Cornish estate set around a 17th-century mansion
  • Heated pool, library, writing room and regular events
  • A 36-acre woodland and garden setting, with spotless amenities

Verily, you’ll very much like Trewan Hall Camping Site, between Padstow and Newquay in mid-Cornwall.

This lovely little place has been developed on an old Cornish estate around the 17th-century mansion of Trewan Hall, and carefully maintained with traditional building techniques to blend in with its 36-acre woodland and garden surroundings. And speaking of gardens, they’re lush – have a look at the site pics…

The Hill family has added all sorts of little touches to make this a top family site, like entertainment varying from local rock/brass bands to shows in the Long Barn in the summer holidays, all professional and free of charge, and the 25-metre covered heated pool, also available in high season.

Available at all times are a large field for ball games in front of the Hall, barns for table tennis, a barn with pool table set aside for teenagers and adults, and a library and writing room. A fully-stocked shop is open nearly 14 hours a day in high season (and shorter hours in low season).

There are two different areas to pick a pitch from: one aimed at families near the play park, shop and barns, and the other more secluded in a bigger field – in both, you can pitch up where you like to have plenty of room, with the owners managing bookings so that there are always more pitches than people and what’s on offer never feels overcrowded.

Trewan Hall also has a woodland playground.

The grocery shop is open between 12/05 and 13/09.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Entertainment and activities are available between 15/07 and 30/08.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 03/07 and 30/08 (subject to weather conditions).

The indoor swimming pool is open between 03/07 and 30/08.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

The maximum touring unit length allowed, including drawbar, is 8m (26'3").

The pool is an outdoor pool covered by a large plastic dome, making it an indoor pool when needed.

The dome can only be taken down when there's been a consistent period of good weather. Conversely, it can only be put up when a long period of poor weather is forecast. The site therefore cannot guarantee if the pool will be covered or uncovered during your stay.

The swimming pool is open 23/05 - 30/05 and 04/07 - 31/08.

Shower block facilities were clean, grounds of site, huge pitches, shop well stocked,

    Disliked:

Slope of field in electric hook up site made sleeping impossible.
Quite a trek to get to the site shop, not good when freezing your ice blocks daily.
Entrances not clearly marked and poor visibility when entering and exiting.
    The outdoor pool closed.
    Showers could be stronger.
The noise from the crows late at night and early morning if you’re anywhere near the trees.

From the manager...

Hi Deborah,

We are very sorry that your stay didn't meet your expectations, I am especially disappointed to see your rating of our customer service as we try our upmost to be as welcoming and helpful as possible. Our pool is not open in low season, as a result our prices are much lower at this time of the year to reflect this, its tricky to be clear on this on Pitch-up but our website does have all the info. Our shop hours are also reduced in Low season so I appologise if we weren't around when you needed us. We are a small family team and can only do our best!

Thank you for your kind words about the gardens and estate, a huge amount of work goes on through the winter and June is when it really pays off. I hope if you do visit us again in the future we can do a better job.

Everything, the area was very spacious and the facilities were fantastic. Beautiful area with everything one could hope for, it even had a herb patch where guests could pick their own herbs! The staff were very friendly and the food was phenomenal. When I come back to Cornwall for a camping trip, this will be my go-to place.

This site is absolutely magical!! The grounds are absolutely stunning and the hall itself is just beautiful. So much space to explore and wander and great for dogs with a dedicated dog walk area where they can be off lead.
Facilities were perfect; toilets and showers were clean and regularly well maintained. Hot showers! And even the opportunity to have a bath!
Shop has literally everything you could need whilst camping! Used the laundry and my partner spent some time in the library. Thanks so much for such a brilliant stay, we'll be back for sure!

A well run site, quiet and extremely clean, the staff we encountered were friendly and willing to help. The site has a laid back feel, the pitches were a good size and with the site quiet, we had no one really near us. It’s a good position for the A30 and amenities close by.
If your looking for a site that has lots to do, swimming pool, bar, kids club, playground then this isn’t the site for you, your better off picking one nearer to Newquay. If you are looking for space, quietness, and a relaxing atmosphere then this for you.

    Disliked:

Signage to access the site from the top road is lacking and the entrance to the top field could be a bit tight for caravans

Local attractions

Trewan Hall is near the centre of Cornwall with easy access to the north coast beaches and within easy driving distance of most of Cornwall’s attractions. For a short stroll, head into the old market town of St Columb Major a mile away, where there’s a 15th-century church, surf store, antique shop and fish and chip shops galore.

Sand fans will be in heaven in this part of Cornwall: the closest beach to Trewan Hall is Mawgan Porth, four miles away; gorgeous Watergate Bay is 10 minutes’ drive away, or head to the Seven Bays clustered around the village of St Merryn, a few miles from Padstow and within 15 to 20 minutes’ drive of the site.

Two top Cornwall spots within 10 miles are Newquay, where you should wriggle into your wetsuit for some of the best surfing in the country (surf schools are all over town and nearby for the uninitiated), and Padstow for the Camel Trail and Camel Estuary Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Zipwires, biodomes and more can be had at the Eden Project 15 miles away.
