Trewan Hall Camping Site: 25m heated swimming pool, open during high season.

General

  • Cornish estate set around a 17th-century mansion
  • Heated pool (in July/August), library, writing room and regular events
  • A 36-acre woodland and garden setting, with spotless amenities

Verily, you’ll very much like Trewan Hall Camping Site, between Padstow and Newquay in mid-Cornwall.

This lovely little place has been developed on an old Cornish estate around the 17th-century mansion of Trewan Hall, and carefully maintained with traditional building techniques to blend in with its 36-acre woodland and garden surroundings. And speaking of gardens, they’re lush – have a look at the site pics…

The Hill family has added all sorts of little touches to make this a top family site, like entertainment varying from local rock/brass bands to shows in the Long Barn in the summer holidays, all professional and free of charge, and the 25-metre heated open-air pool (only open in July and August, with a dome to cover it over if the weather's a tad chilly).

Available at all times are a large field for ball games in front of the Hall, barns for table tennis, a barn with pool table set aside for teenagers and adults, and a library and writing room. A fully-stocked shop is open nearly 14 hours a day in high season (and shorter hours in low season).

There are two different areas to pick a pitch from: one aimed at families near the play park, shop and barns, and the other more secluded in a bigger field – in both, you can pitch up where you like to have plenty of room, with the owners managing bookings so that there are always more pitches than people and what’s on offer never feels overcrowded.

Trewan Hall also has a woodland playground.

Please note

The grocery shop is open between 12/05 and 13/09.

Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the campground while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time so that the team can provide information about your unit/site.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 02/07 and 31/08 (subject to weather conditions).

Minimum spacing of 6 metres between pitches.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Entertainment and activities are available between 15/07 and 30/08.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The maximum touring unit length allowed, including drawbar, is 8m (26'3").

The pool is an outdoor pool covered by a large plastic dome, making it an indoor pool when needed.

The dome can only be taken down when there's been a consistent period of good weather. Conversely, it can only be put up when a long period of poor weather is forecast. The site therefore cannot guarantee if the pool will be covered or uncovered during your stay.

Loved the community feel. The pool was incredible for an outside pool. We even enjoyed the diving board. Great toilets and showers also. Lots of plugs dotted around toilets etc to charge phone. Shop has everything you need with fresh fruit and gorgeous hot pasties!

    Disliked:

Signs should be bigger or further up the road on approaching the campsite. The turn out (the exit and entrance is the same but one lane) is quite sharp, you’re basically blind going out onto the typical tight Cornish roads… hope something can be done about this.

The site is absolutely stunning, as a first time camper I was worried about sharing facilities but they were so clean! It was quiet at night so the boys could sleep and the pool was such a lovely addition for the day time.

The camp shop is very good on stock and price.

It was just a lovely experience.

What an amazing place cannot praise the site enough.... Loved the whole feel of the place.. All the staff were lovely... Pool was great although wish it was open earlier than 10am....facilities were great and location was great too

    Disliked:

My last night was completely ruined by selfish and rude people that put their bbq a couple of meters from my tent!! God forbid you get smoke near your own tent!! Sheesh! .... They also made a lot of noise way past midnight... A sour end to my stay... Obviously don't blame the camp... But they weren't following rules of site and got away with it which is a big shame

Superb campsite, peaceful with a very relaxed approach. Loved the 6 metre between you and your neighbours rule which allows some privacy and ensures that people don't feel crowded or crammed in. The showers etc were spotless.

Local attractions

Trewan Hall is near the centre of Cornwall with easy access to the north coast beaches and within easy driving distance of most of Cornwall’s attractions. For a short stroll, head into the old market town of St Columb Major a mile away, where there’s a 15th-century church, surf store, antique shop and fish and chip shops galore.

Sand fans will be in heaven in this part of Cornwall: the closest beach to Trewan Hall is Mawgan Porth, four miles away; gorgeous Watergate Bay is 10 minutes’ drive away, or head to the Seven Bays clustered around the village of St Merryn, a few miles from Padstow and within 15 to 20 minutes’ drive of the site.

Two top Cornwall spots within 10 miles are Newquay, where you should wriggle into your wetsuit for some of the best surfing in the country (surf schools are all over town and nearby for the uninitiated), and Padstow for the Camel Trail and Camel Estuary Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Zipwires, biodomes and more can be had at the Eden Project 15 miles away.
