  • Relaxed, back to basics camping overlooking Praa Sands beach
  • Beach pub serving food five minutes' walk away
  • Shower and toilet block, washing machine, phone and laptop charging
As family-friendly and back to basics activities go, building sandcastles on the beach is at the top of many lists. And what could be better than the beach being a gorgeous mile-long stretch of golden Cornish sand, in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and less than five minutes' walk from a family-friendly rural campsite overlooking it all? A few minutes' walk above the beach at Praa Sands, between Penzance and Helston on Cornwall’s south coast, is Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site, which prides itself as a park offering camping – and memory making – as it used to be. It’s a spacious park that’s been family-run since the 1950s and the committed team prides itself on keeping guests relaxed – probably not too difficult on a park overlooking Praa Sands… Higher Pentreath has space aplenty for kids to run around, and a shop on site for basics (and ice cream). Facilities include a toilet and shower block with free hairdryer, washing machine (small charge applies), covered washing up area, phone and laptop charging at reception, and ice pack freezing or supplying. A garage is half a mile away and a 24-hour supermarket within 10 minutes’ drive; there's also a pub, the Sandbar, right on Praa Sands, serving home-cooked Mediterranean-style meals and Sunday carvery alongside food theme and regular music nights.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Higher Pentreath Farm Campsite is a peaceful campsite in Cornwall, located about a 10-minute walk from the beautiful Praa Sands beach. It's perfect for families, couples, and anyone looking to relax in nature – dogs are welcome too.

The site offers clean facilities, showers, laundry, wi-fi, and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The grounds are spacious, though slightly sloped in places.

There’s plenty to explore nearby: beaches, St Michael’s Mount, the Minack Theatre, scenic walking trails, and charming towns.

In short – quiet, clean, and close to the beach. A great base for relaxing and discovering the best of South Cornwall.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Beautiful views, very friendly people.
Short walk to the beach and good food at the pub. Plenty of space.

Disliked Very hard to get a pitch that's not on a slope which makes sleeping difficult in a tent.
Showers and toilets were clean but very tired and only 1 shower block which isn't enough for the size of the site. Ladies has 6 showers but men's only had 2.
Shame dogs arent allowed on the beach between 10 am and 6pm.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked This was my first time camping with my 7 year old daughter and we absolutely loved this site. I liked the campsites location. The shower bloke was cleaned daily, there were enough showers and toilets for the women

Disliked Nothing really to dislike. Minor thing would be the shower/toilet situation for the men. Women had a few so wasn't having to wait were as the men in our group commented on this

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Really good views of the coast. Plenty of room to pitch up

Disliked Sloped fields that make it hard to get a level but it is what it is if you want the views. The toilets and showers for men aren't adequate enough. 2 toilets means that you wait for a while if it's busy plus the toilet and shower blocks are tired and need a revamp with heating.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked What a great site, we loved it. Tons of space, and you can choose where you pitch. The site is on a hill but there are flat areas around the edges of the fields, and the hill gives you the view! Facilites are really good. Plenty of showers (not push button), always hot water, on site washing machine and dryer (reasonable cost, I paid £6 to wash and £3 to dry). Good washing up facilities, indoors. Several drinking water taps. Freezer for ice blocks. Beach is about 10 minutes down the hill and is great. (Lifeguards and pub). Location is a good base to explore. There was a burger van on site for a few nights we were there, good food at really decent prices (if you go and it's on offer then try the chicken/bacon sandwich, delicious!). There's a small supermarket a couple of miles away, an honesty shop on site for sweets and such, and choice of supermarkets in nearby Helson. We had a great break here and would love to go back.

A consideration if you stay here: check the weather forecast for wind. It was very windy for a couple of the days we were there (gusts at 40mph plus). Not ideal to be on top of a hill! We ended up moving pitch, still on top of a hill but tucked away behind the hedge. There are more sheltered spots, but a lot of the site is more open. It wouldn't put me off staying here again, I'd just check the wind forecast before picking a pitch!

Disliked The phone charger box things - are very handy but fierce. They only take £1 coins (could do with a sign saying this). I got 1 hour of charging for £1 - fair price. But I went over my time by 0.47 seconds... yes 47 seconds, so I had to pay another pound to get my phone back! Didn't mind paying for the over run but boxes won't accept 10p or 20p or whatever, only £1. So if you use them you need another phone or watch or stopwatch or whatever to count you down to the end of your time (we had none of those... all on my phone inside the locked box 😂), make sure you're back to get it out at 58 minutes in. Or be prepared to pay more or wait another hour to get your moneys worth out of the second £1!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Live music was laid on Friday night & was very good.
Food outlet that came on site morning and evening was fairly priced.
Washing up area good.
Phone charge station looked look
Large washer & dryer
Plenty of space between pitches as you can go where you like.

Disliked As others have said, shower and toilet are not enough for the size of the site and need some work, they also need to be cleaned more often & toilet paper ran out before 10am. The site was not as busy as it could have been so to see the pressure when only about 60 pitches being used would put me off coming if it was busier.
Little shop is not how it sounds, only a small shed, honestly box, selling a few sweets, teabags & some tin stuff, no milk, bread, nothing cold and no ice creams.
No mention of the live music being on, only a board placed late afternoon so nearly missed it as we went to the beach bar. A lot of people on site didn't get to experienced it, which was a shame as it was very good, so better Comms needed, just mention it at check in as it's a great bonus.
Walk to beach if you are young, fit and health is ok, but hard work if you are not & a bit scary if you had small children/ pram etc as there are no paths just one car narrow lane. Timing is important as it can get busy with people driving too and from the beach, so you have to tuck in.
Beach bar mentioned in write up is not that now, but replacement the food still looked good.
Best views from top field, otherwise only glimpses of beach & sea between the trees on lower fields.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Nothing to like about the site.
Look back at the reviews over the years. Most of the bad reviews are about pitching on a slope, or the seriously disgusting showers and toilets, we can’t all be wrong can we.

Disliked Showers and toilets are disgusting

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Great location. Very close to the beach. Able to pitch where you want with no fixed pitch boundaries. Food available on the weekend. Very close to a CoOp around the corner.

Disliked Not enough toilet and shower facilities for the size of the campsite. There was only a single block for 4 fields of camping. Men had only 2 toilets and 2 showers and a urinal. There were 2 "overflow" toilets in a separate 'out house' for both men and women. The showers were very old. One with a blocked drain so stood in dirty water, and the other had a very smelly drain.
No activities for kids. No climbing frame or anything like that.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Beautiful location, very close to Praa Sands beach. Great for dog owners and lots of space for kids to run around. We had a brilliant stay ( 3 nights) and will definitely come back !! Staff are very friendly and helpful. Best thing about this place apart from the above I’ve mentioned, is the freedom to pitch up where you like on the fields, and camp fires and barbecues are allowed too as long as they are safe. No stickler staff checking up on you constantly-they just leave you to enjoy the beautiful area in peace and are very welcoming on arrival. We will be returning for sure! I’ve been camping a lot to other places and this is by far the best campsite, very well priced where you can just totally relax. Down at the beach ( 5mins walk down the rd), there’s an amazing beach bar, food is very tasty, next door to this is The Welloe where again, the food is lovely, must try the pizzas, all great staff in both places. There’s a wetsuit/ bodyboard hire place, accessible toilets and a beautiful stretch of beach - fantastic for everyone and dog friendly. Just left today and already planning our next trip back, thank you for making our first trip to Cornwall so pleasant. Best field to stay in is one closest to facilities , but get there early if you can.

Disliked Toilets could have perhaps better facilities and an update in showers but that’s it and to be honest it’s pretty minor considering you’ve got everything else with the scenery and location and is just mainly cosmetic. The utility room is great, fast washing machine cycles and a hot dryer to dry off clothes at a reasonable price- bring coins! Little honesty shop in sure where you can get a couple of basics like washing liquid.

Local attractions

This is such a lovely part of Cornwall, on the south coast with the pristine beaches of Land’s End and the Lizard Peninsula, but also close to the big family attractions: the theme park Flambards and the National Seal Sanctuary are both within 10 to 15 minutes’ drive. Praa Sands West is the closest of the two Praa Sands beaches to Higher Pentreath – within a third of a mile – but the other, Praa Sands East, is still well under a mile’s walk away and very doable even if you’re carrying your surfboard. Nearby Prussia Cove and Kenneggy Sands are quieter coves, Kennack Sands has a nature reserve to its east, and a must is Marazion, sheltered by the National Trust-managed island of St Michael's Mount 10 minutes’ drive from Higher Pentreath and looking over stupendously good-looking Mounts Bay. Take a boat from here to the island or go around the harbour and village on a guided tour (held on Tuesdays and Fridays). Once off the beach, the towns and villages of Cornwall are close to hand: the nearest to Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site is the ancient market town of Penzance (about 15 minutes' drive), home of the Penzance pirates in Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera (try and sing their shanties after a scrumpy).
