General

  • Back to basics family camping overlooking Praa Sands
  • Beach pub serving food five minutes' walk away
  • Shower and toilet block, washing machine, phone and laptop charging

As family-friendly and back to basics activities go, building sandcastles on the beach is at the top of many lists. And pray, what could be better than the beach being a gorgeous mile-long stretch of golden Cornish sand, in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and less than five minutes' walk from a family-friendly rural campsite overlooking it all?

A few minutes' walk above the beach at Praa Sands, between Penzance and Helston on Cornwall’s south coast, is Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site, which prides itself as a park offering camping – and memory making – as it used to be. It’s a spacious park that’s been family-run since the 1950s and the committed team prides itself on keeping guests relaxed – probably not too difficult on a park overlooking Praa Sands…

Higher Pentreath has space aplenty for pipsqueaks to run around, and a shop on site for basics (and ice cream). Facilities include a toilet and shower block with free hairdryer, washing machine (small charge applies), covered washing up area, phone and laptop charging at reception, and ice pack freezing or supplying.

A garage is half a mile away and a 24-hour supermarket within ten minutes’ drive; there's also a pub, the Sandbar, right on Praa Sands, serving home-cooked Mediterranean-style meals and Sunday carvery alongside food theme and regular music nights.

    Nothing!!!!!!!

    Disliked:

EVERYTHING!!!! We had been backpacking the coast path and needed somewhere to get some sleep. We camped in the top field where there was a group of young people/ older teenagers also camped; their language was disgusting; I am an ex- serviceman and former rugby player so know a bit about bad language; these youngsters were shouting at the top of their voices and just seemed to want to swear as much as possible and as loudly as they could. This finished at 10.00pm.
We then had loud music coming from the lower field; this was not just background but so loud we could plainly hear every song; this was accompanied by people speaking in very loud voices; (which they had to do to be heard above the music). When this finally finished, just after 2.00am we had a couple of lads camped near us clearly drunk talking very loudly and quite raucous, they finally settled around 3.30am
There are 3 touring vans on the site which, it would appear, have not moved for some time; there were cars visiting, people speaking in normal volume and car doors slamming pretty much all night; don't know what was going on there but my previous occupation led me to a few conclusions! I should have asked for a rebate as I didn't get any sleep until well gone 4am!!!!!
I have walked/ camped all over this country and this was, without doubt, the worst place I have ever had the misfortune to stumble across. It is not a family site, it is a carnival/ party venue which is okay if that is what you want, we wanted some rest. If you have children and/ or you want to relax, avoid this site like the plague.

The views were amazing, the top field was very spacious and very quite. It's back to basic camping which we loved. Has everything you need ie, showers, toilets, washing machine and tumble dryer. We camped from the 9th July til 20th July which is out of main holiday season so was really nice, not sure what it will be like once the school holidays start and if the amenities would cope with being busy.

    Disliked:

The lack of welcome on arrival by onyone. Eventually when reception opened everything was fine but stayed wondering for 3 days until we could.

We loved everything about this site! It was back to basics camping which was just what we wanted and the shower and toilet facilities they provided were clean and well maintained. When we arrived the reception wasn't open even though it was within the open times stated so we just went and pitched up which didn't seem to be a problem. There was plenty of space to pitch the tent, it didn't feel over crowded and when we went there were plenty of places to pitch up that were level. We loved that we could have campfires and the views from the top field are incredible! If you're looking for amazing views, peace and quiet and a basic but well maintained campsite then this is perfect and we will definitly be returning.

Directions

Satnav: please note that our postcode will bring you closer to the area rather than to the campsite itself. You will need to look for the Higher Pentreath signposts on the side of the road and follow the directions below.

We are 6 miles east from Penzance and 5 miles west from Helston. Follow the A30 nearly all the way to Penzance, then take the first exit off the roundabout on to the A394 to Helston. Continue for 3 miles until you come into the village of Newtown and then turn right towards Praa Sands just before the garage. Follow the road for a quarter of a mile before coming to a sharp left bend. We are on the right just up the lane.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

This is such a lovely part of Cornwall, on the sublime south coast and the pristine beaches of Land’s End and the Lizard Peninsula, but also close to the big family attractions: the theme park Flambards and the National Seal Sanctuary are both within ten to 15 minutes’ drive.

Praa Sands West is the closest of the two Praa Sands beaches to Higher Pentreath – within a third of a mile – but the other, Praa Sands East, is still well under a mile’s walk away and very doable even if you’re carrying your surfboard.

Nearby Prussia Cove and Kenneggy Sands are quieter coves, Kennack Sands has a nature reserve to its east, and a must is Marazion, sheltered by the National Trust-managed island of St Michael's Mount ten minutes’ drive from Higher Pentreath and looking over stupendously good-looking Mounts Bay. Take a boat from here to the island or go around the harbour and village on a guided tour (held on Tuesdays and Fridays).

Once off the beach, the towns and villages of Cornwall are close to hand: the nearest to Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site is the ancient market town of Penzance (about 15 minutes' drive), home of the Penzance pirates in Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera (try and sing their shanties after a scrumpy).

One of the oldest lidos in the country, the Jubilee Pool, is here, as well as subtropical plants at Morrab Gardens, and Poldark, the only complete underground tin mine in Cornwall. The museum and art gallery Penlee House has piles of paintings by members of the Newlyn School, and there are several art galleries in the town centre.

Artists should also make a beeline for St Ives on the north coast, Cornwall’s most famous arty area and home of Tate St Ives (if this is too yawnsome for little people, there are four beaches around the town too).

Or take the kids to Helston, to the east of Higher Pentreath and Praa Sands, for Flambards Theme Park; St Austell half an hour from Helston for the famed Eden Project; or one of the other big family attractions around Cornwall and its coast: Newquay Zoo, Crealy Great Adventure Park and the red pandas, Cornish choughs and other inhabitants of Hayle’s Paradise Park.
