As family-friendly and back to basics activities go, building sandcastles on the beach is at the top of many lists. And what could be better than the beach being a gorgeous mile-long stretch of golden Cornish sand, in the Cornwall National Landscape – and less than five minutes' walk from a family-friendly rural campsite overlooking it all? A few minutes' walk above the beach at Praa Sands, between Penzance and Helston on Cornwall’s south coast, is Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site, which prides itself as a park offering camping – and memory making – as it used to be. It’s a spacious park that’s been family-run since the 1950s and the committed team prides itself on keeping guests relaxed – probably not too difficult on a park overlooking Praa Sands… Higher Pentreath has space aplenty for kids to run around, and a shop on site for basics (and ice cream). Facilities include a toilet and shower block with free hairdryer, washing machine (small charge applies), covered washing up area, phone and laptop charging at reception, and ice pack freezing or supplying. A garage is half a mile away and a 24-hour supermarket within 10 minutes’ drive; there's also a pub, the Sandbar, right on Praa Sands, serving home-cooked Mediterranean-style meals and Sunday carvery alongside food theme and regular music nights.

Stunning sea views & a peaceful vibe. Close to Praa Sands beach. Showers/toilets generally clean, though some reckon male facilities could do with a spruce-up. Spacious, pick-your-own pitches. Great Cornwall base, but watch out for the hills!

Liked The views and location. Super convenient for going into Penzance.
The washing up area was nice and clean and there was a good amount of sinks. With a washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer for you to use.

Disliked None of the fields are flat so if you’re in a tent that’s fun.
The toilet block was dirty and outdated.
The showers would go from freezing cold to absolutely scalding hot every few seconds. I physically couldn’t wash my hair under the hot water as it was burning my scalp. None of our party could get them to a consistent temperature and we tried a few different showers.

Liked Great site chilled good location with a lovely view of the sea and good enough womens loos and showers. Doesnt try to lock in / out the customers at night which i appreciated- place was safe and quiet just the same.

Disliked Let down by too few mens toilets and showers. Dog friendly but bangs from bird scarers from first light till dusk meant our dog was terrified the whole time- not the fault of the campsite but would have been good to know.

Liked Fantastic views and a short walk to a beautiful beach

Disliked Toilet and showers not the best especially the men's and very few showers for the size of the site. Toilet emptying was not nice as it was blocked. The site is almost all on a slope, which is fine for vans with chocs but pretty awful for tents. Price was unfair as the huge tents and cars paid less than our off grid small van

Liked Great view from our pitch of the sea and sand. Beach within 10 mins. No formal lines of tents and caravans. Pitch where you want. Great . The owner was easy to talk too and did not go around bothering people. Really laid back stay thank you.

Liked Gorgeous location and only a short walk to the lovely beach where there are some places to grab food and drink.

Disliked Would be even better with more toilets and showers especially for the gents. The toilets were often blocked and therefore unappealing and unusable.

Local attractions

This is such a lovely part of Cornwall, on the south coast with the pristine beaches of Land’s End and the Lizard Peninsula, but also close to the big family attractions: for starters, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is 25 minutes' drive away. Praa Sands West is the closest of the two Praa Sands beaches to Higher Pentreath – within a third of a mile – but the other, Praa Sands East, is still well under a mile’s walk away and very doable even if you’re carrying your surfboard. Nearby Prussia Cove and Kenneggy Sands are quieter coves, Kennack Sands has a nature reserve to its east, and a must is Marazion, sheltered by the National Trust-managed island of St Michael's Mount 10 minutes’ drive from Higher Pentreath and looking over stupendously good-looking Mounts Bay. Take a boat from here to the island or go around the harbour and village on a guided tour (held on Tuesdays and Fridays). Once off the beach, the towns and villages of Cornwall are close to hand: the nearest to Higher Pentreath Farm Camp Site is the ancient market town of Penzance (about 15 minutes' drive), home of the Penzance pirates in Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera (try and sing their shanties after a scrumpy).
