General

  • Award-winning countryside park under seven miles from Newquay airport
  • Managed wildlife haven: spot badgers, foxes, rabbits and kingfishers
  • Adventure playground, games room and fishing lake

What could be cleverer than flying to Cornwall for your holiday and thus avoiding motorway madness and hours of 'Are we there yet?' from the kids? Travelling light and posting your kit ahead of you, that's what.

Tremendous Trethiggey Touring Park is less than seven miles from the airport at Newquay and frequently has guests to stay who do this very thing – what good sense. And even though it's in a stellar part of Cornwall with loads to see and do all around, what jolly good sense too to stay on site for a bit... for there's quite a lot to do.

For starters, cast off at the small but well-stocked fishing lake to land carp, bream or roach... while any non-anglers in your party laze around using the wifi available across the whole park for a reasonable fee. Kids can be kept busy too, as the Trethiggey team has added an adventure playground and a games room with pool tables and games machines.

Trethiggey's also a carefully considered wildlife site if you want to have a species spotting wander: there are over 4,000 shrubs and trees on its countryside setting, badgers frequently visit, foxes live in the nearby fields and you should also see kingfishers, jays, buzzards and rabbits. Nature signs are dotted around the park detailing all the critters that live and visit there.

Trethiggey welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Nice and cheap, plenty of pitches to choose from due to time of year. Washing facilities were clean and sufficient for what was required.

    Disliked:

The campsite could do with a good clean up with plenty of old vans littering the place. Certain areas looked as though someone had fly tipped their rubbish and the road around is littered with potholes. The site could be very good if the place was cleaned up.

Toilets & showers were disgusting, looked liked they haven't been cleaned for a very very long time!!
Advertised as the bar was still there serving food but shut down and looked abandoned!!
We stayed here a few years ago and it was great but certainly not now.
Shop not open and only had a very small handful of items, if you managed to get in. We were not aware it had changed hands as info on pitch up is incorrect and the new owners were not friendly at all. Wouldn't have minded paying what we did if it was worth it but expensive, could have stayed elsewhere for less, wished we had now!! Will not be returning

From the manager...

HI
Thanks for your comments the toilets were being cleaned on a daily basis but we were having issues with our cleaners the bar and shop closure has been on pitch up for awhile and also on our website and also states that the site is under new ownership we are sorry you didnt enjoy your stay. We have lots of plans for the coming season for improvements.

The pitch was quite. and the local pub just a few minutes walk.

    Disliked:

The site was very run down. I have been to the site twice before approx three years ago and it was clean and well kept, with a well stocked shop and a lively Bistro. Unfortunately, the same can't be said on this visit, The Bistro is no longer there and the wasnt a shop. just a few things on a shelf.
We did voice a complaint and was refunded £55.00

From the manager...

Hi Thanks for the comments we have recently bought the park and we have loads of plans for the winter and we were having issues with our cleaners at the time you stayed and this was explained to you the bistro and shop closure was on our website and on pitch up the problems with the toilets will not be happening again.

Local attractions

Food, glorious food: Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant is nearby at Watergate Bay, and it's 16 miles or so from Newquay to Padstow and the four fish restaurants of Rick Stein.

Or have surf, glorious surf, other watery sports and the building of many sandcastles with the kids at the glorious beaches of Newquay, with plenty of pubs, restaurants and clubs around to relax/party in once you've dried off.

On Newquay's outskirts, put cheesy grins on the kids' faces with a whisk around award-winning and all-weather DairyLand Farm World, one of several kid-friendly days out around the area within an accessible drive: see also Flambards theme park at Helston, the Eden Project near St Austell, Crealy Great Advenure Park at Wadebridge and an unusual but gripping day out at Padstow's National Lobster Hatchery.

Elsewhere around Cornwall, pick your passion and set off: historians can explore the old tin mines of World Heritage Site St Agnes or Cornwall's many historic and National Trust houses.

Marine enthusiasts should have a look at Newquay's Blue Reef Aquarium and the National Maritime Museum at Falmouth, and arty types can make their way to the galleries and artistic atmosphere of lovely St Ives.

Must see

  • Newquay Zoo (2.0 miles)
  • Lappa Valley Steam Railway (2.2 miles)
  • Blue Reef Aquarium (2.6 miles)
