  • Family-run, family-friendly site less than five miles from Newquay
  • Traditional and cosy bar with conservatory and terrace
  • Pool, play area and tourist discount vouchers

To Cornwall! And to the beaches of the north coast, the surf of Newquay and the peaceful pedals of the gentle Camel Trail. And also to family-friendly Trekenning Tourist Park, to settle down for lazy days on site in between all the sightseeing, surfing and Cornish pasty sampling.

Trekenning is just outside the small town of St Columb Major, under five miles from Newquay and a short drive from Padstow, Portreath, Watergate Bay and other beaches and seaside towns of the north Cornwall coast. It covers six and a half acres and has grass pitches in scenic setting with plenty of room around to play.

The cosy and friendly traditional pub-style bar, with conservatory, terrace and food menu, is one of the main highlights of this family-friendly site; another is the heated outdoor pool, handsomely set among trees, shrubs and green countryside. Other facilities include a café/takeaway in high season, a play area, and wifi.

For tips on where to start when diving into all the attractions and sights of Cornwall, tourist info and discount vouchers are available in reception.

Also on site are amenity blocks with individual showers and family bathrooms; a launderette and a washing-up area.

Please note that the bar has limited opening hours outside high season.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 20/05 and 31/08 (subject to weather conditions).

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

As the site is in close proximity to Newquay Airport and the A39, there can be occasional noise from aircraft and cars.

The bar has limited opening hours outside high season.

The shop is currently under construction, with work due to be completed by Easter 2018.

Money grabbing campsite on a roundabout on direct airport landing path 11/09/2017

    Disliked:

Bad service, booked through Pitch up. Had two options for us as we were bringing our touring caravan. Grass no electricity or grass with electricity. We booked the with electricity option. We paid immediately through pitch up. When we arrived we were told that we had to pay £10 more as pitch ups web site has a problem & would not allow them to add the electricity price to the booking. We paid the additional £10.00. I personally think they don't add the electricity cost as their prices would not be that attractive considering their location (7 miles from Newquay, 30-40 miles from anywhere else). I did state in my booking that we would like a pitch with good internet reception. We were told internet was not free & is chargeable, which we expected as most campsites do charge a daily fee. These campsite operators do not charge a daily fee they charge by the MB/GB used (roughly around £1 per hour). They had an unlimited option available for £10 so we chose that think it would last us for our period of stay. The next morning the internet was not working. I told the owners boy who was on reception who then blamed the 3rd parties infrastructure & that there was nothing they could do about it, how rude. They surely must have chose the infrastructure themselves when purchasing the service from the 3rd party. I then went to the bath/shower block & was told by the owner that the shower block is out of service but the toilets do have showers. Indeed they do no lockable shower door just a curtain next to the urinals. the shower did not have any thermostat controls just a stream of low powered luke warm water for 2 mins then you have to press the button again. I went to use the basins to get a shave. There were no plugs available for two of the 3 basins so I had to use the cracked one with a green stain like a tap had been dripping on it for years. Though taps must have been replaced at some point as they were the push down two second type (circ 1980's). The whole toilet area was very dated & gruby with no lighting or electricity as I tried turn on the old 3 bar heater above the basins but it did not work. There was even an old rusty hair dryer machine that took 20p's but I never tried it as it look unsafe. I usually clean the basins after use at other campsites but I didn't here as I wanted to see if it got cleaned as I had not seen a cleaner anywhere during our stay. The next morning the sink was in the same condition as I left it the previous morning dirty. The pool was closed I asked why as it was the first day of school returning and was told it was winter now. There was no shop or supermarket as advertised. We were told it was under construction at the moment. The bar was closed all the time while we were there. We went to use the pot wash area & there was a 20p coin slot for hot water. The reception area had notices for people, one read £1 for mobile phone charging. £1 for this £1 for that. The whole campsite is on a sloping gradient next to the a roundabout & major road so the traffic noise is quite bad. When we went to leave we had sunk into the ground so could not push our caravan onto the the driveway. Two boys from reception came to help us & we eventually got free. I did notice lots of strange marks on all the pitches, they were in fact landrover tyre tracks as the when it rains the caravans sink so they have to be dragged off by the landrover. Our stay was not a very pleasant experience & does not even deserve a one star rating. We would not recommend this camp site. Though there were a dozen or so old caravans permanently pitched there as there were lots of grubby awnings attached to them & some even had their own pallet type fencing & gravel patches so I can only assume they are a permanent fixture to this not so pleasant site.

From the manager...

Thanks for taking the time to write a review. The pitch type you booked through pitchup was an ‘Electric optional grass pitch’. When making a booking through pitchup you are required to add the electricity as an extra from the drop down box on the booking page. At no point did we say that the pitch up website had a problem. Our prices are very competitive and are very reasonable when compared to other sites in the area.

As you requested ‘a good internet position’ made at time of booking, we placed you as close to the routers as possible. When you arrived and asked about internet access you were informed it is chargeable. I explained at this time the 2 options we have and asked what type of usage we required. I informed you that I thought the best option for you as you told me you wanted to stream videos, would be the £5 - 5 hour unlimited download usage; which you purchased. An hour later your girlfriend came to reception and asked if she could change the internet access type to the £10 - 3GB usage limit, I explained the usage to her and asked if that’s what you wanted, she said that’s OK. I then exchange the £5 unlimited usage to the £10 3GB limit usage and she paid the extra £5 difference. The next morning I remember speaking to you (I’m the 'boy' you mention and I am then owner of the site) with regards to the issue of you using all of the 3GB Usage on the £10 option. I explained to you the internet options available and the fact that you have used all of the 3GB usage. You then said to me that it was excessive and other sites charge by the day. I then explained to you as new owners of the site we will be changing/improving the internet in the near future because at present it is provided by a 3rd party. Then as you left reception you proceed to ‘drop’ your internet receipt on the floor just outside reception.

At the time of your stay the bath/shower block had an electrical fault which was being resolved. The showers in the male toilet block are opposite the urinals and have a shower curtain. The thermostatic controls for the shower are within the works of the boiler system. I’m very sorry you didn’t like our shower push button and you had to press it again after 2 minutes.
We have a rigours cleaning schedule on site and the toilets and showers are cleaned everyday. As new owner we appreciate your feedback and we have earmarked the toilet block for development in the off season.

It states in our general info on pitch up (the 1st point) that ‘The outdoor swimming pool is open between 20/05 and 31/08 (subject to weather conditions)’. The pool was closed on the 4th September the day before you arrived. It also says in the same information that ‘The shop and takeaway is currently under renovation’ & ‘The bar has limited opening hours outside high season’. We will update this info with specifics.

Yes our reception has a notice that says mobile charging is £1 and also the cost for day visitors on to site. Not sure where the other £1 for this £1 for that is.

Our site is located on south facing gradient which allows great views of the surrounding countryside, near to the A39 and Newquay Airport as stated in our description. With the heavy rain we had during your stay the ground was wet as you where on a grass pitch. The 2 boys from reception (the 2 owners) assisted you and your girlfriend with getting your van off pitch.

On our site we offer customers the option of a seasonal pitch where customers can site the tourers here for the year. We will be implementing new rules with regards to awning been taken down when not in use.

We are sorry you didn’t have a pleasant stay; all of your comments will be passed on so we can continually improve our site. We do feel all info should be reviewed before choosing on the correct site for you.

The campsite is very well kept. The pool area is lovely for the kids and the location so closely to Newquay is great for surfing.

There is a nice bar onsite and the staff are extremely helpful.

We would look to return at some time in the future.

    Disliked:

It is under the flight path, but Newquay airport isn't that busy. Also the wifi isn't included and is quite costly to purchase.

Local attractions

If you've come to Cornwall to surf, you're in the right spot. Newquay less than five miles away is one of the best-known surf beaches in Britain, home to surf schools and kit hire shops as well as the famed Boardmasters festival, held every year in August.

If you're here with kids, try the Camel Trail, a flat, family-friendly bike and walking path running for 18 miles of mostly traffic-free cycling along an old railway track and the Camel Estuary. Bike hire for all ages, including bike buggies, is along the route.

Also around for kids is Dairyland Farm World, the award-winning park just outside Newquay; Camel Creek Adventure Park, about 10 miles away at Wadebridge, and the Flambards Experience, about an hour's drive down in Cornwall's south near Helston. If you fancy one of Cornwall's biggest and most famed attractions, the Eden Project is about 13 miles away from Trekenning.

Among the many (many many) other things to see and do are having award-winning fish and chips at Padstow, more surfing at Watergate Bay, pondering on the splendours of the Lost Gardens of Heligan, or the tors and hikes of Bodmin Moor.

Must see

  • Cornwall's Crealy Great Adventure Park (4.7 miles)
  • Newquay Zoo (5.7 miles)
  • Lappa Valley Steam Railway (5.9 miles)
