The Oaks Holiday Park: View from the site

General

  • Small family-run park five minutes' drive from Looe
  • Monkey sanctuary within walking distance; Eden Project 30 mins' drive
  • Stroll to neighbouring ponds for a walk or picnic

Bring binoculars, bring buckets and spades, bring barbecues… they’ll all come in mighty handy during a stay at The Oaks Holiday Park, a relaxed rural site five minutes’ drive from Looe.

Those binoculars are to help you get a closer look at the wildlife that often passes by this corner of Cornwall – sparrowhawks, kestrels and barn owls can often be spotted overhead, and kingfishers and dragonflies frequently flit about the neighbours’ ponds. Guests are welcome to take a wander down there for a stroll or a waterside picnic (but please make sure dogs are on leads and keep an eye on the kids to ensure all is safe at all times).

The bucket and spade are essential items for an outing to the beach – Looe has a fine sandy specimen to play on, and there are plenty of other options along the Cornish coast (or back over the border into Devon). Not in the mood for sands? This part of Cornwall’s stacked with stuff to do, including the Wild Futures monkey sanctuary a short walk away and the famed Eden Project half an hour by car.

And the barbecue? Well, clearly that’s for cooking up tasty dinners out in the fresh air – you’re most welcome to do so on site, and with luck you may be treated to one of the spectacular sunsets that often grace the sky around here. (The sunrises are also renowned to be equally pretty, if you’re into the early shift…)

  • 1 bedroom camping pod (deluxe, pet friendly)

  • Liked:

We absolutely loved our stay in one of the wooden pods. There was plenty of room for myself, my husband, two children and our large Labrador. Everything inside and out was well maintained and very clean. It was easy to let the dog out on the secure deck area and then take him on a lead either around the field or onto the grass area just around the pod (which the kids liked to play on too). We found the wifi worked well, we stayed when it was very hot, so could have done with a fan when there was no breeze coming through the door (no shade outside until early eve). The views are amazing! The owners are very friendly. We ended up doing the 10min drive to Seaton beach most days as it was great for the kids and the dog. Adrenaline Quarry (20 min drive) was also a hit with the kids (age 9 and 10). The Coddy Shack close by did great food and the local food order the owners have once a week (cheese, pasties, bread, meats etc) was very tasty. Highly recommend (peaceful and relaxing).

    Disliked:

Nothing, although if my kids had been younger something for them to play on would have been a life saver (eg logs, balance beams, stepping stones, play area).

The site was small and quiet. The view over the valley was beautiful. The little shop on site is handy for the essentials. Our pitch was level, and we were able to park the car right next to the tent. With the site being small it was only a short walk to the bathroom. The family who run it are really lovely and make you feel welcome.

    Disliked:

The bathrooms were unisex so on a number of occasions we faced with urine all over the toilet, and shavings in the sink. We've never experienced this before with a dedicated female bathroom.
There regularly wasn't toilet roll, or hand towels.
The bathrooms only appeared to be cleaned properly once a week, so they became pretty grubby after a few days.

Warm, friendly check in. Caravan was immaculate and very nice touches to greet us after a long journey...cream tea, pint of milk, washing up liquid and scourer, tea towel and more than one toilet roll! Bed was really comfy and bedding very good. The park itself is very quiet with fantastic views. Situated about 3 to 4 miles from centre of Looe. The Cabins or pods look new with lovely decking and the yurts are very comfy too and spacious. (shown to me by family using them). Everyone we spoke to said this site is a little gem and all of us said we would no hesitate to book again. This family have got things right for anyone wanting to escape and have a peaceful holiday! Highly recommended!

    Disliked:

All that was missing that could enhance the stay, would be a fly screen. Just the odd fly but my dog hates them and chases them!

Local attractions

Start your stay with a wander around Looe, taking in the harbour and unusual banjo pier before settling on the sands for the day. The South West Coast Path runs through the town for folk in search of a ramble with a sea view, and the harbour’s full of boats to book for fishing trips to hook mackerel for the barbie, or to see what critters are swimming below.

If you’d like to see more underwater beasts, there are many in residence at Fowey Aquarium (40 minutes). For landlubbing creatures, it’s a leisurely 15-minute stroll to meet the monkeys at Wild Futures Sanctuary or a 25-minute drive to view an assortment of animals at Porfell Wildlife Park & Sanctuary.

The famed domes of the Eden Project (half an hour) are famed for a reason – a visit here makes a fab day out wandering among all manner of weird and wonderful plants from across the planet. Green-fingered folk might also like to check out the 200-acre Lost Gardens of Heligan (not actually lost, but off the B3273 50 minutes away).
