  • Small family-run park five minutes' drive from Looe
  • Monkey sanctuary within walking distance; Eden Project 30 mins' drive
  • Bring binoculars, buckets and spades and barbecues
Bring binoculars, bring buckets and spades, bring barbecues… they’ll all come in mighty handy during a stay at The Oaks Holiday Park, a relaxed rural site five minutes’ drive from Looe. Those binoculars are to help you get a closer look at the wildlife that often passes by this corner of Cornwall – sparrowhawks, kestrels and barn owls can often be spotted flying over the park and the adjacent Duchy woodland. You may see a deer or two in the fields surrounding the site too. The bucket and spade are essential items for an outing to the beach – Looe has a fine sandy specimen to play on, and there are plenty of other options along the Cornish coast (or back over the border into Devon). Not in the mood for sands? This part of Cornwall’s stacked with stuff to do, including the Wild Futures monkey sanctuary a short walk away and the famed Eden Project half an hour by car. And the barbecue? Well, clearly that’s for cooking up tasty dinners out in the fresh air – you’re most welcome to do so on site, and with luck you may be treated to one of the spectacular sunsets that often grace the sky around here. (The sunrises are also renowned to be equally pretty, if you’re into the early shift).

Electric gravel touring pitch

Liked: Lovely and peaceful with clean toilets everything you need on a site really

Disliked: The roads to get there,it will stop me returning to this place and probably Looe itself if I can't use main roads to get in,its so easy to get lost, some roads even had grass in the middle and a little track bit for your wheels with just enough room and they are 2 way 😅😭I was very lucky nothing else was coming I found it very frightening not easy if towing or in a large vehicle would never recommend unless your in a car and completely confident driving Cornish lanes.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Everything was great, perfect site spread out across different areas making it really private and cute, toilets and showers were exceptional, clean and spacious and never saw anyone else using the facilities like you would at some other sites.

Site owners were fantastic, I accidentally reversed onto the grass (my fault) and got stuck, I was really worried but the site owners made us feel ok and helped pull us out back onto the gravel.

Phone signal was brilliant, I have stayed in 3 other places in Looe and never had phone signal but this site was perfect (Vodafone / Sky mobile / EE)

Away from any main roads, it was incredibly quiet day and night

Disliked: Wish I could have stayed longer! ( we have already booked to come back )

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Very quiet site but sadly it was pouring down when we arrived. Finding the camp was tricky as some tight lanes but we were able to call the owner who guided us in which we were grateful for.

Disliked: Gravel pitch is very narrow so just enough room to put your step out but doing the toilette cassette and water means you are on the grass. Toilets and showers were ok, water was warm and nice big bathrooms but lots of cobwebs. No hand wash in the toilet. One sink for washing up with slightly warm water. Didn’t meet the staff but like I say they were lovely when I called for directions.

Local attractions

Start your stay with a wander around Looe, taking in the harbour and unusual banjo pier before settling on the sands for the day. The South West Coast Path runs through the town for folk in search of a ramble with a sea view, and the harbour’s full of boats to book for fishing trips to hook mackerel for the barbie, or to see what critters are swimming below. If you’d like to see more underwater beasts, there are many in residence at Fowey Aquarium (40 minutes). For landlubbing creatures, it’s a leisurely 15-minute stroll to meet the monkeys at Wild Futures Sanctuary or a 25-minute drive to view an assortment of animals at Porfell Wildlife Park & Sanctuary. The famed domes of the Eden Project (half an hour) are famed for a reason – a visit here makes a fab day out wandering among all manner of weird and wonderful plants from across the planet. Green-fingered folk might also like to check out the 200-acre Lost Gardens of Heligan (not actually lost, but off the B3273 50 minutes away).
