  • Pick your own pitches at this back to basics camping field in Cornwall
  • A five-minute walk from Bude and the South West Coast Path
  • Spacious hillside pitches; barbecues and dogs permitted
No frills but in a splendid hillside setting on the north Cornwall coast… pitches at Efford Down Campsite are in a sloping farm field that's great for family breaks. Located five minutes' walk from Bude and its independent shops, cafés and pubs, it's also within easy strolling distance of supermarkets for picking up self-catering supplies. There’s plenty to do outdoors too: a five-minute walk will see you surfing off Summerleaze beach, or you can potter down to Bude Sea Pool for a swim in less than 10 minutes. There’s also direct access to the South West Coast Path from the campsite, for action-packed days hiking headlands, or gentler ambles along Bude Canal and around the fishing harbour. But that’s not all – there are canoe and mountain bike rentals, pony trekking and golf courses all within a few minutes' drive, and you can try your hand at coasteering, sea kayaking and surf kayaking from local activity centres too. There are no designated pitches here, so you'll be able to choose your own camping spot from what’s available when you arrive in the gently sloping field. Simple facilities at the site include running water, toilets, showers and plenty of space to park cars by your pitch.

What customers say

This is a well-located, peaceful campsite just a short walk from Bude town centre and beaches. Visitors praise its clean facilities, friendly atmosphere, and relaxed, back-to-basics feel. The site's location is consistently highlighted as a major advantage. Some reviews mention the hilly terrain and occasional issues with shower temperature or hot water for washing up, though many find the facilities perfectly adequate for a camping experience. The manager has addressed issues raised regarding vehicle size and electric hook-ups.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Showers and toilets really nice! People running the site very friendly. Site very pretty, and really close to town and the beach.

Disliked Despite the quiet rules one small group did wake up at midnight talking loudly. Wouldn't care usually but liked the quiet rules because we wanted to get up really early. Rules could maybe be better signposted?

Electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Nothing

Disliked Booked an electric pitch , on arrival with a large motorhome I discovered that that there was no electric hookups available, no space , called and was informed that I should squeeze in between a large party of campera that were obviously using our booked pitch , requested a refund and then had have the inconvenience of locating another site at last minute to accommodate. Wouldn't recommend at all attitude wasn't good.

From the manager: Well now, my 'ansome, that's a bit of a different tale to the one we remember...

First things first, we only accept campervans and motorhomes up to 7 metres long, so that does keep things a bit snug when anything bigger turns up.

As for the electric hook-up, we've got plenty of 'em. Sometimes, if folk have parked a bit silly and spread themselves out like seagulls on a pasty, we simply ask 'em to budge up a touch so everyone can get where they're meant to. Nine times out of ten it's sorted in a minute with a smile.

We're sorry you decided not to stay, but we're genuinely pleased you found somewhere that suited you better. Every campsite's different, and every traveller finds the field that's right for them.

And finally... you mentioned a large party of "campera." Now I've lived and farmed in Cornwall all my life, and I'll admit I've seen some strange creatures over the years—but I still haven't figured out what a campera is. If you meant campervans, well, that's a different story altogether.

Safe travels, and all the best from Efford Down.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Location is fabulous for waking into Bude!
Toilets and showers basic but very very clean.
Most of the ground is uneven so best to have chocks
I think £27 a night was enough to pay.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Chocks Away!!!! Probably best to leave em in actually. Lots of love x

Would definitely visit again, possibly with larger ramps or something

Liked Location, clean, laidback, lovely place!

Disliked Tricky to level vehicle even with levelling ramps.

From the manager: Make sure you don't sleep with your head at the bottom..... of the slope that is!

Local attractions

Around Bude, there are plenty of things to keep you busy. This pleasant resort has half a dozen different beaches to explore, with sandy spots, secluded coves, rockpools and the saltwater Bude Sea Pool to try out. Just out of town, you can escape the hustle and bustle at Widemouth Bay (five minutes' drive), or for a peaceful few hours of sport you could make a day of it at Bude and North Cornwall Golf Club (five minutes), where visitors are welcome. The South West Coast Path (five minutes' walk from base) has ample hiking opportunities for serious walkers (and less serious ones who fancy a shorter jaunt to some of north Cornwall's less accessible beaches). Good public transport services run along much of the route, making it possible to loop back to base in Bude by bus rather than walking the long way home. For families, this part of Cornwall has Tintagel Castle (35 minutes) with its connections to King Arthur; the village of Tintagel also has caves and a toy museum to keep the kids occupied. Alternatively, take them for a go on the rides, slides and flumes at Camel Creek Family Theme Park (50 minutes).
