  • Wild camping with spectacular views on the Saint’s Way in Cornwall
  • A 10-minute drive to the Eden Project and 30 minutes to the coast
  • Back-to-basics site with hot showers; barbecues allowed
Everybody and their dogs are welcome at The Camping Field, a sheltered hillside spot with views across to Helman Tor and its prehistoric fort. Located in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this site is all about peaceful seclusion – but with the added bonus of being a 10-minute drive from the A30. Whether you’re just passing through on your way to Land’s End or hanging around for a while, chances are you won’t be lost for something to do here. For starters, there are hiking opportunities aplenty: choose between the Saint’s Way (accessed directly from the site), Bodmin Moor (15 minutes’ drive) and the South West Coast Path (25 minutes). If you want to add a bit of culture to the mix, Georgian-era Pencarrow House and Garden (20 minutes) has a good line in antiques, as well as walks in landscaped parkland. The sea is a must in Cornwall, of course, so it's handy that the site is just a 30-minute drive from south coast beaches like sandy Porthpean and dog-friendly Spit Beach, and the kids can burn off energy on the rides at Springfield Fun Park (20 minutes). Most people, however, will probably put the famous Eden Project (10 minutes) at the top of their to-do list, and spend a day pottering around tropical greenhouses dotted with madcap sculptures. Limited facilities to give guests something of a wild-camping experience include toilets, hot showers, water taps, a washing-up area and a grey-water waste unit. Barbecues are permitted on site, and you can pick up any bits and bobs in St Austell (20 minutes).

What customers say

This campsite offers a peaceful, back-to-basics experience with spacious pitches and beautiful rural views. Visitors praise the friendly and exceptionally helpful owner, Richard, who actively maintains the clean portaloos and showers. While facilities are described as basic, they are well-kept. The location is convenient for local attractions like the Eden Project, and its quiet atmosphere is ideal for stargazing and nature lovers. Some mention narrow access roads and occasionally inconsistent shower temperatures, but overall, the value for money and relaxed atmosphere are highly recommended.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Spacious well maintained large pitches to the right hand side for EHU. Lovely hot showers and plenty of toilets dotted around the site. Large open field for kids and family to play (Fly kites, football, rounders, cricket and more). Very friendly atmosphere and Richard was superb when we requested some firewood it was with us within 20mins and at £5 a crate was great value for the night fire for marshmallows and cooking our locally sourced sausages, steak and chicken from the butchers in St Austell. Easy access from site to Helman Tor which is visible from site and ventures into Looe, Polperro, St Ives, Newquay. Lost Gardens of Halligan are a must visit with lots to see and do and a very affordable family day out. We can't wait to plan our next visit at The Camping Field, Thank You Richard.

Liked Really lovely place tucked away in the central point of Cornwall. I really loved this peaceful spot. I felt safe as a single traveller. The toilets and showers were very clean. The owner is a very lovely and helpful guy too. I will definitely come back to this place and recommend it to my friends. I was very grateful for the cost per night especially when you travel on a budget. Thank you so much!

Local attractions

Screech Owl Sanctuary (20 minutes’ drive) is home to more than just owls, though these are really rather lovely to handle and admire in the regular flying displays. Other residents include emus, alpacas and wallabies, which you can meet, pet and feed (advance booking is recommended). Also on site are a playground and a café serving delicious homemade cakes. If you're travelling with young children, they might like the rides at Camel Creek Family Theme Park (30 minutes), which include a floral take on spinning teacups, a gentle drop tower and a water-fight ground with fillable balloons, plus soft-play areas. At the restored Lost Gardens of Heligan (40 minutes), you can stroll through themed areas such as the Productive Gardens, growing a bounty of fruit and veg; the Pleasure Grounds, dotted with statuary and fountains; and the Jungle, a lush area of tropical palm trees, banana plantations and bamboo tunnels.
