  • Wild camping with spectacular views on the Saint’s Way in Cornwall
  • A 10-minute drive to the Eden Project and 30 minutes to the coast
  • Back-to-basics site with hot showers; barbecues allowed
Everybody and their dogs are welcome at The Camping Field, a sheltered hillside spot with views across to Helman Tor and its prehistoric fort. Located in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this site is all about peaceful seclusion – but with the added bonus of being a 10-minute drive from the A30. Whether you’re just passing through on your way to Land’s End or hanging around for a while, chances are you won’t be lost for something to do here. For starters, there are hiking opportunities aplenty: choose between the Saint’s Way (accessed directly from the site), Bodmin Moor (15 minutes’ drive) and the South West Coast Path (25 minutes). If you want to add a bit of culture to the mix, Georgian-era Pencarrow House and Garden (20 minutes) has a good line in antiques, as well as walks in landscaped parkland. The sea is a must in Cornwall, of course, so it's handy that the site is just a 30-minute drive from south coast beaches like sandy Porthpean and dog-friendly Spit Beach, and the kids can burn off energy on the rides at Springfield Fun Park (20 minutes). Most people, however, will probably put the famous Eden Project (10 minutes) at the top of their to-do list, and spend a day pottering around tropical greenhouses dotted with madcap sculptures. Limited facilities to give guests something of a wild-camping experience include toilets, hot showers, water taps, a washing-up area and a grey-water waste unit. Barbecues are permitted on site, and you can pick up any bits and bobs in St Austell (20 minutes).

What customers say

Chill spot, basic campsite, heaps of room & great country views. Friendly, helpful owner, clean loos & showers, top value. Narrow roads & slopey sites noted, but great for a cruisy, back-to-basics hols.

Liked Great place to take a stop over. Good clean facilities with friendly owner. Plenty of space and electric hook up if needed. The views were stunning. Quiet site with no disturbances, suitable for families and couples wanting to get back to basics. Portaloos and shower facilities clean and accessible. Liked The owner Richard is so nice and very helpful is always around for you to ask anything about the local area.
It’s very good for the price.
It’s very close to the Eden project if that is somewhere you want to go.
There is plenty of space even with the electric hook ups.
All the toilets and shower’s although basic are clean always stocked with loo roll.
There is very little light at night so if you wanted to star gaze then this would be a grate place.
Is an easy base for seeing a lot of Cornwall.
Good signs to it
Can be quiet and peaceful.
Water points are dotted around the whole site
Richard comes around daily just to check and make sure the toilets are clean and tidy and everything is ok.
Was told when we arrived that the showers were playing up
Very honest
This is our 2nd visit and it’s always a work in progress and Richard is always making changes that are making the camping field better and better we will definitely be back again and always have a grate time when we stay it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but we like it.

Disliked These didn’t bother us but just being honest.
The roads are very narrow if you don’t like narrow roads then prob not the best place to go.
It is very basic but again very clean
Some campers can play loud music till late at night (this was only 1 night and then back to quite)
Is a hill but are some flat areas
You’re not told where to pitch up so you could come back from a day out and have someone pitched really close to you.
The showers are very hit and miss with the temperature.
Some areas are a good distance to the toilet although the porter loos are dotted around the whole site and were clean.

From the manager: Thank you Andy for your review
We are a back to basic campsite with good clean facilities unfortunately the water heater broken down but still work. Most campers can cope with this and understand the situation . Your family struggle to cope with everything so this campsite didn't suit your needs . When I use to milk cows we had artic lorry's delivered corn about 24 tons then there was milk lorry which hold 24 000 thousand litres they cope with a single lane . This is Cornwall we are no snowflakes
We are in a SSSI area that's why The camping field blends into this beautiful area
Hopefully you find a camsite that suits your needs

Liked Very spacious. Well signposted. Fab check in times. Lovely and quiet. Great basic camping. Clean portaloos and showers. Super price. Will defuse again.

Disliked Shower was hot and cold- but I think probably because someone was washing up at the same time. Didn’t put us off though.

Local attractions

Screech Owl Sanctuary (20 minutes’ drive) is home to more than just owls, though these are really rather lovely to handle and admire in the regular flying displays. Other residents include emus, alpacas and wallabies, which you can meet, pet and feed (advance booking is recommended). Also on site are a playground and a café serving delicious homemade cakes. If you're travelling with young children, they might like the rides at Camel Creek Family Theme Park (30 minutes), which include a floral take on spinning teacups, a gentle drop tower and a water-fight ground with fillable balloons, plus soft-play areas. At the restored Lost Gardens of Heligan (40 minutes), you can stroll through themed areas such as the Productive Gardens, growing a bounty of fruit and veg; the Pleasure Grounds, dotted with statuary and fountains; and the Jungle, a lush area of tropical palm trees, banana plantations and bamboo tunnels.
