  • Wild camping with spectacular views on the Saint’s Way in Cornwall
  • A 10-minute drive to the Eden Project and 30 minutes to the coast
  • Back-to-basics site with hot showers; barbecues allowed
Everybody and their dogs are welcome at The Camping Field, a sheltered hillside spot with views across to Helman Tor and its prehistoric fort. Located in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this site is all about peaceful seclusion – but with the added bonus of being a 10-minute drive from the A30. Whether you’re just passing through on your way to Land’s End or hanging around for a while, chances are you won’t be lost for something to do here. For starters, there are hiking opportunities aplenty: choose between the Saint’s Way (accessed directly from the site), Bodmin Moor (15 minutes’ drive) and the South West Coast Path (25 minutes). If you want to add a bit of culture to the mix, Georgian-era Pencarrow House and Garden (20 minutes) has a good line in antiques, as well as walks in landscaped parkland. The sea is a must in Cornwall, of course, so it's handy that the site is just a 30-minute drive from south coast beaches like sandy Porthpean and dog-friendly Spit Beach, and the kids can burn off energy on the rides at Springfield Fun Park (20 minutes). Most people, however, will probably put the famous Eden Project (10 minutes) at the top of their to-do list, and spend a day pottering around tropical greenhouses dotted with madcap sculptures. Limited facilities to give guests something of a wild-camping experience include toilets, hot showers, water taps, a washing-up area and a grey-water waste unit. Barbecues are permitted on site, and you can pick up any bits and bobs in St Austell (20 minutes).

Electric grass pitch

Liked: This site was lovely, it had electric hookups, showers (2 x good showers) toilets and a washroom. It wasn’t a flat field but up the top where we were it wasn't bad and even down the bottom

Disliked: The wind

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Very lovely field in the middle of nowhere -I didn't stay up but would probably be a really good dark sky site. Basic amenities, but adequate. Owner Richard very friendly and laid back- he jump started my van for me because I left the ignition and lights on and flattened the battery. No arrival or leaving deadlines, so no rush.

Disliked: nothing

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: This is a lovely camping field with lovely views, plenty of space, clean basic facilities, hot showers and a friendly and helpful owner Richard. Fantastic location for the Eden Project. I called Richard to ask about a taxi and he kindly took us and picked us up again and only accepted a modest amount towards a beer or two. If you want marked out pitches with large shower blocks, shops and swings for the kids go elsewhere. If you like to be in a peaceful field with the sound of birds and cows then this is for you.

From the manager: Thank you Colin for your review The Camping field is a back to basic campsite which is in a SSSI area which means Sites of special scientific interest If you did not enjoy the views of helman tor and the wildlife and the peacefulness which the campsite provides you are better to go to a campsite which have bars and fast food, overcrowded, noisy neighbours. We are just a simple campsite with good facilities Happy camping Richard

Local attractions

Screech Owl Sanctuary (20 minutes’ drive) is home to more than just owls, though these are really rather lovely to handle and admire in the regular flying displays. Other residents include emus, alpacas and wallabies, which you can meet, pet and feed (advance booking is recommended). Also on site are a playground and a café serving delicious homemade cakes. If you're travelling with young children, they might like the rides at Camel Creek Family Theme Park (30 minutes), which include a floral take on spinning teacups, a gentle drop tower and a water-fight ground with fillable balloons, plus soft-play areas. At the restored Lost Gardens of Heligan (40 minutes), you can stroll through themed areas such as the Productive Gardens, growing a bounty of fruit and veg; the Pleasure Grounds, dotted with statuary and fountains; and the Jungle, a lush area of tropical palm trees, banana plantations and bamboo tunnels.
