  • Wild camping with spectacular views on the Saint’s Way in Cornwall
  • A 10-minute drive to the Eden Project and 30 minutes to the coast
  • Back-to-basics site with hot showers; barbecues allowed
Everybody and their dogs are welcome at The Camping Field, a sheltered hillside spot with views across to Helman Tor and its prehistoric fort. Located in the Cornwall National Landscape, this site is all about peaceful seclusion – but with the added bonus of being only a 10-minute drive from the A30. Whether you’re just passing through on your way to Land’s End or hanging around for a while, chances are you won’t be lost for something to do here. For starters, there are hiking opportunities aplenty: choose between the Saint’s Way (accessed directly from the site), Bodmin Moor (15 minutes’ drive) and the South West Coast Path (25 minutes). If you want to add a bit of culture to the mix, Georgian-era Pencarrow House and Garden (20 minutes) has a good line in antiques, as well as walks in landscaped parkland. The sea is a must in Cornwall, of course, so it's handy that the site is just a 30-minute drive from south coast beaches like sandy Porthpean and dog-friendly Spit Beach, and the kids can burn off energy on the rides at Springfield Fun Park (20 minutes). Most people, however, will probably put the famous Eden Project (10 minutes) at the top of their to-do list, and spend a day pottering around tropical greenhouses dotted with madcap sculptures. Limited facilities to give guests something of a wild-camping experience include toilets, hot showers, water taps, a washing-up area and a grey-water waste unit. Barbecues are permitted on site, and you can pick up any bits and bobs in St Austell (20 minutes).

Liked This is a proper basic camp site, so don't stay here if you like luxury! The field is great. Didn't have any trouble getting pegs in and the best thing is you can arrive and leave whenever you like. It is on a slope so you do need ramps for your van.
The farmer is very friendly and informative about the area too.

Disliked Not so much a dislike but would be good if there was some sort of table in the washing up room as nowhere to put your dishes as you are washing them.

Liked Lovely site with loads of space plenty of room for the kids to run and didnt seem busy even in the height of the summer. Owner really friendly and happy to have a chat kept ontop of the facilities regularly and everywhere was clean and well kept. Amazing price with awesome views.

Disliked This is personal preferance but i enjoy more luxurious facilities when i am away. The toilets are functional and are proper flushing toilets they are just in a porta loo shell but kept spotlessly clean. I found the washing up facility hard to use as the sink is soo deep and the showers although lovely and warm (possibly too warm for kids) and adjusting the temperature was difficult they are not spacious enough to assist your child washing if they are young. With an actual facilities block (mainly due to young kids) this would be my yearly holiday as i loved the site.

Liked Recently come back from staying on this campsite, I went with my partner and 3 boys. Absolutely loved this site the owner Richard was friendly and very helpful we couldn't get on the first day due to car issues phoned up and explained and let us stay an extra day so we didnt miss out. Loved the fact pitches wasn't on top of each other. My boys absolutely loved it having a big field to play in as well. The views were stunning. The facilities were cleaned regular as well. Definately would stay here again and also recommend it to.

Liked We had a great time at the camping field.
The location is fabulous, lovely and quiet with dark skies to observe meteor showers and lots of wildlife to watch but not too far away from major roads to explore further afield.
Everyone was warm and friendly. There is a very relaxed and respecful vibe to the campsite. Richard (owner) is always about, doing jobs and checking in on everyone

Local attractions

Screech Owl Sanctuary (20 minutes’ drive) is home to more than just owls, though these are really rather lovely to handle and admire in the regular flying displays. Other residents include emus, alpacas and wallabies, which you can meet, pet and feed (advance booking is recommended). Also on site are a playground and a café serving delicious homemade cakes. If you're travelling with young children, they might like the rides at Camel Creek Family Theme Park (30 minutes), which include a floral take on spinning teacups, a gentle drop tower and a water-fight ground with fillable balloons, plus soft-play areas. At the restored Lost Gardens of Heligan (40 minutes), you can stroll through themed areas such as the Productive Gardens, growing a bounty of fruit and veg; the Pleasure Grounds, dotted with statuary and fountains; and the Jungle, a lush area of tropical palm trees, banana plantations and bamboo tunnels.
