  • Wild camping with spectacular views on the Saint’s Way in Cornwall
  • A 10-minute drive to the Eden Project and 30 minutes to the coast
  • Back-to-basics site with hot showers; barbecues allowed
Everybody and their dogs are welcome at The Camping Field, a sheltered hillside spot with views across to Helman Tor and its prehistoric fort. Located in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this site is all about peaceful seclusion – but with the added bonus of being a 10-minute drive from the A30. Whether you’re just passing through on your way to Land’s End or hanging around for a while, chances are you won’t be lost for something to do here. For starters, there are hiking opportunities aplenty: choose between the Saint’s Way (accessed directly from the site), Bodmin Moor (15 minutes’ drive) and the South West Coast Path (25 minutes). If you want to add a bit of culture to the mix, Georgian-era Pencarrow House and Garden (20 minutes) has a good line in antiques, as well as walks in landscaped parkland. The sea is a must in Cornwall, of course, so it's handy that the site is just a 30-minute drive from south coast beaches like sandy Porthpean and dog-friendly Spit Beach, and the kids can burn off energy on the rides at Springfield Fun Park (20 minutes). Most people, however, will probably put the famous Eden Project (10 minutes) at the top of their to-do list, and spend a day pottering around tropical greenhouses dotted with madcap sculptures. Limited facilities to give guests something of a wild-camping experience include toilets, hot showers, water taps, a washing-up area and a grey-water waste unit. Barbecues are permitted on site, and you can pick up any bits and bobs in St Austell (20 minutes).

What customers say

A simple, peaceful campsite with great views. Facilities are clean, and the owner is praised. Narrow access roads can be tricky for big rigs. Some minor shower/toilet issues were noted but are being addressed. Ideal for a natural getaway.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Nice simple site and reasonably priced. Fairly flat ground to pitch, well cut grass and mostly flat gravel driveway to the field itself. Clear signage on approach was really helpful.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Spacious, simple site, good views, friendly host Richard. We are used to wild camping in multiple countries and this is a basic site with loos and showers, water and electric hook up for people who want it. Laid back vibe which we appreciate.

Disliked No real dislikes as we like a basic site.

Powered grass campsite

Liked There was plenty of spaces to pitch up. We booked an electric pitch and there was plenty to choose from. The toilets, are not like ur standard camping toliets, the was a surprised to see actually functional toliets at a campground. Richard went above and beyond to make sure that myself and my friends were settled and happy with everything even checking in at night time.

Disliked There was nothing that we disliked about the site.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Lovely place, quiet, just 2 other caravans, park where you like, managed to tuck up against the edge to take the edge off the breeze. April and we had lovely sun. Views great across the fields and Tor, dark sky's at night for star gazing. Had 2 bbqs and firepits. What more could you ask for. Richard was great and very accommodating

Local attractions

Screech Owl Sanctuary (20 minutes’ drive) is home to more than just owls, though these are really rather lovely to handle and admire in the regular flying displays. Other residents include emus, alpacas and wallabies, which you can meet, pet and feed (advance booking is recommended). Also on site are a playground and a café serving delicious homemade cakes. If you're travelling with young children, they might like the rides at Camel Creek Family Theme Park (30 minutes), which include a floral take on spinning teacups, a gentle drop tower and a water-fight ground with fillable balloons, plus soft-play areas. At the restored Lost Gardens of Heligan (40 minutes), you can stroll through themed areas such as the Productive Gardens, growing a bounty of fruit and veg; the Pleasure Grounds, dotted with statuary and fountains; and the Jungle, a lush area of tropical palm trees, banana plantations and bamboo tunnels.
