  • Wild camping with spectacular views on the Saint’s Way in Cornwall
  • A 10-minute drive to the Eden Project and 30 minutes to the coast
  • Back-to-basics site with hot showers; barbecues allowed
Everybody and their dogs are welcome at The Camping Field, a sheltered hillside spot with views across to Helman Tor and its prehistoric fort. Located in the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this site is all about peaceful seclusion – but with the added bonus of being a 10-minute drive from the A30. Whether you’re just passing through on your way to Land’s End or hanging around for a while, chances are you won’t be lost for something to do here. For starters, there are hiking opportunities aplenty: choose between the Saint’s Way (accessed directly from the site), Bodmin Moor (15 minutes’ drive) and the South West Coast Path (25 minutes). If you want to add a bit of culture to the mix, Georgian-era Pencarrow House and Garden (20 minutes) has a good line in antiques, as well as walks in landscaped parkland. The sea is a must in Cornwall, of course, so it's handy that the site is just a 30-minute drive from south coast beaches like sandy Porthpean and dog-friendly Spit Beach, and the kids can burn off energy on the rides at Springfield Fun Park (20 minutes). Most people, however, will probably put the famous Eden Project (10 minutes) at the top of their to-do list, and spend a day pottering around tropical greenhouses dotted with madcap sculptures. Limited facilities to give guests something of a wild-camping experience include toilets, hot showers, water taps, a washing-up area and a grey-water waste unit. Barbecues are permitted on site, and you can pick up any bits and bobs in St Austell (20 minutes).

What customers say

Grand spot for a no-frills break, owner's a gem. Lovely views, plenty of space, spotless loos. Mind the tight roads in. Some had a bit of bother with the toilets or showers now and then.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely to choose your own pitch and it was such a large site that each space was really peaceful.
Toilets (a flushing toilet in a portaloo cabin) were always spotless as they were cleaned so frequently.
Lots of wildlife to spot in the wildflowers that bordered the field.
Location was very central for our plans but did involve some quite narrow lanes - pick your route carefully!

Disliked Of the two showers it seemed that only one could have hot water at a time! However, no way to tell which one until you were in there. One was always cold and the other was boiling and too hot for children.
For the first couple of days the bins were overflowing but we appreciate that sometimes people leave huge amounts of rubbish behind and nothing can be done until bin collection day.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The host is a lovely guy with loads of local knowledge and a whole list of places to visit. The field was very spacious and not overcrowded, loads of space for the children to play, the views are lovely. The host has a very relaxed attitude and by his words “as long as everyone uses common sense there is no need to get involved”

We will definitely stay here again.

Disliked The showers were a bit hot and miss with the hot water and could do with upgrading in the future.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked This site has all the basics, very much a no frills place but perfect for what I needed. The night sky was spectacular, definitely a great place for stargazing. Handy signposts along the way - if you see one that says "next right" it doesn't mean the literal next right as that is someone's driveway! :-D

Disliked Dishwashing was a bit tricky, but manageable.

Local attractions

Screech Owl Sanctuary (20 minutes’ drive) is home to more than just owls, though these are really rather lovely to handle and admire in the regular flying displays. Other residents include emus, alpacas and wallabies, which you can meet, pet and feed (advance booking is recommended). Also on site are a playground and a café serving delicious homemade cakes. If you're travelling with young children, they might like the rides at Camel Creek Family Theme Park (30 minutes), which include a floral take on spinning teacups, a gentle drop tower and a water-fight ground with fillable balloons, plus soft-play areas. At the restored Lost Gardens of Heligan (40 minutes), you can stroll through themed areas such as the Productive Gardens, growing a bounty of fruit and veg; the Pleasure Grounds, dotted with statuary and fountains; and the Jungle, a lush area of tropical palm trees, banana plantations and bamboo tunnels.
