Gwel-an-Nans Farm: Grass pitch

General

  • Rural family-run site on a farm on the edge of Bodmin Moor
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of Lanhydrock House and Restormel Castle
  • Playing field, nature trail and animals to feed on site

Sort yourself a serene stay in Cornwall at Gwel-an-Nans Farm, a site in a secluded spot south west of Bodmin Moor and less than a 15-minute drive from the town of the same name. Pull up and you’ll get a sunny welcome from Gerald and Sheila, the couple who run this two and a half-acre park in the middle of a bigger animal-filled farm.

These friendly folk are joined by two equally friendly donkeys who are always happy to meet any small explorers you're bringing along – give them a wave while running off to the separate enclosed field for games of football and bike riding.

This is a spectacular park for thrillseeking as well as lazing about, with the moor right outside the entrance for mountain biking, and off-road paths over in Cardinham Woods less than a 10-minute drive away. Keen freewheelers can take on the famed Bodmin Beast as well as a couple of other tricky red-grade trails.

Along with pedalling on the 18-mile Camel Trail, family-friendly touring on two wheels is to be had at the National Trust’s Lanhydrock House estate less than a 10-minute drive. And if you’d rather roam, ask Gerald and Sheila about the two-mile nature trail leading down to a hidden wooded valley back on site or set off on a circular saunter around the round walls of Restormel Castle 15 minutes’ drive...

Reckon you’ll be famished on your return? Supermarkets, restaurants and pubs are over in Bodmin – check out local sights like the jail, regimental museum and obelisk while you’re in the area too.

Pleasant site, thougtfully set up to meet the needs of most campers.25/07/2021

We enjoyed the laid-back, farm atmosphere of this well-maintained site. The pitches are level, although the surrounding countryside is attractively rolling.
Amenities also include free use of a microwave, fridge/freezer, hairdryers and radiant heater in the showers. This is more than you often get in much more expensive sites.
Although we didn't use one, other campers seemed greatly to enjoy the fire pits and barbecues that are available for rent. There are donkeys to feed and a separate small field is set aside as a children's play area.
Overall, we thought this was an excellent, small, family run site.

    Disliked:

We liked everything, although we did think that at the very height of the season the number of showers and loos might benefit from an increase, although to be fair we had no problems in late July. The dog who greets you on arrival could perhaps moderate her welcome a little, although the donkeys on the other hand are unfailingly civil, and a delight.

We had a lovely stay at this site, which is in a truly beautiful location. The site is small, secluded, and quiet. We particularly enjoyed watching the house martins swooping about and feeding the resident donkeys. The site owners offered home cooked pasties and sausage rolls as well as fire pits and barbecues for very reasonable prices. The bathroom facilities were clean and safe and the water tap and bins were centrally located and only a short walk away from all the pitches. There was also a nice woodland walk on the site which took around 20 minutes and would be great for children.

    Disliked:

There was only one toilet and shower for men and the same for women, but overall there were very few occasions throughout the whole week that we had to wait or queue to use the facilities, so it wasn't too much of a problem.

Loved everything about this wonderful little gem of a campsite. Owners are amazing, always out and about keeping the facilities immaculate and any issues that arose, rain or shine they were out keeping us informed of everything going on. You can see why they have so many regulars as they do go above and beyond for their guests. Great facilities on site, everything you need if you’re like myself and a first time camper and a great pitch size so plenty of space. Had a choice of paying cash or bank transfer so was easy to transact with. Will 100% revisit in the near future. Thank you to the owners for making my first camping experience such a pleasure (despite the rain!)

Everything, met on arrival and made to feel extremely welcome, there was a in-depth but friendly induction of the site, set up, pitch sizes just right. Everyone on the site was friendly, they have regulars and you can see why the further into your stay.
Dog walks are fantastic, you can hire fire pits, bbq’s, charcoal, just about everything you need.
Facilities are, toilets, showers with space! Washing machines, tumble dryer, fridge freezer and microwave, hair dryers in the ladies and gents!
Benches on wheels so you don’t break your back moving them!
It’s not very often I can sit in one place and relax for hours, here it was very easy, thank you all for a fantastic break.
