Gwel-an-Nans Farm: Grass pitch

General

  • Rural family-run site on a farm on the edge of Bodmin Moor
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of Lanhydrock House and Restormel Castle
  • Playing field, nature trail and animals to feed on site

Sort yourself a serene stay in Cornwall at Gwel-an-Nans Farm, a site in a secluded spot south west of Bodmin Moor and less than a 15-minute drive from the town of the same name. Pull up and you’ll get a sunny welcome from Gerald and Sheila, the couple who run this two and a half-acre park in the middle of a bigger animal-filled farm.

These friendly folk are joined by two equally friendly donkeys who are always happy to meet any small explorers you're bringing along – give them a wave while running off to the separate enclosed field for games of football and bike riding.

This is a spectacular park for thrillseeking as well as lazing about, with the moor right outside the entrance for mountain biking, and off-road paths over in Cardinham Woods less than a 10-minute drive away. Keen freewheelers can take on the famed Bodmin Beast as well as a couple of other tricky red-grade trails.

Along with pedalling on the 18-mile Camel Trail, family-friendly touring on two wheels is to be had at the National Trust’s Lanhydrock House estate less than a 10-minute drive. And if you’d rather roam, ask Gerald and Sheila about the two-mile nature trail leading down to a hidden wooded valley back on site or set off on a circular saunter around the round walls of Restormel Castle 15 minutes’ drive...

Reckon you’ll be famished on your return? Supermarkets, restaurants and pubs are over in Bodmin – check out local sights like the jail, regimental museum and obelisk while you’re in the area too.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Coronavirus update: please note that donkey trap rides are not currently available, although guests are welcome to meet the donkeys and see them every day.

Wow! Where to start? The site was fantastic, it had amazing views and was so peaceful. The woodland walk was beautiful. The facilities, although minimal (only one of each shower/toilet), were always immaculate and it was rare that you had to wait to long (a slight wait may be an inconvenience for some but it didn't bother us, especially given how.cheap the site is). The pasties you can arrange to have cooked for you were lovely. Norma was around frequently checking everything was OK, and was so friendly. It's clear that she (and her parents who own the site) are very passionate about what they do. The playing field for the kids was a bonus and very well thought out as it meant the kids had somewhere to play away from people's tents and caravans. The location was brilliant for exploring both Devon and Cornwall and there is tonnes of wonderful places within a 30min to an hour drive. A sign of a good site is how many regulars they have, this one clearly has several families that return year after year, and I can't say I blame them. The boys and I would definitely return again and again if we lived nearer. Would definitely choose this site if we decide to visit Cornwall again in a couple of years time (once the memory of a 12hr journey home has faded from my memory 😄)

Only one ladies and one men's shower. I was lucky and didn't have to wait long!

From the manager...

Many thanks for your review.
I was surprised to see your score for accommodation was so low as on our site you provide your own accommodation.
We do only have one male & one female shower. We are only a small site, hopefully you didn’t have to wait too long for the shower.
We have our own water supply and as such we don’t have the water pressure to have any more on site unfortunately.

We do hope you visit again.
