Pear Tree Farm: The male Alpaca standing proud.

General

  • Peaceful, spacious family-run farm site 10 minutes from Henfield
  • 10 minutes' drive from the South Downs National Park; 20 from Brighton
  • Pick up fresh free-range eggs from the farm's hens

Alpacas, goats, Shetland ponies… the nippers are going to love this one (to be fair, it’s likely the grownups will love it too, but feel free to make out it’s for their benefit if its earns you brownie points).

If you’re fond of finding furry friends on your holidays, set forth for farmyard fun at Pear Tree Farm, a family-run site 10 minutes’ drive from Henfield (and its handy supermarket and shops). This West Sussex site is part of a 12-acre property, but with guest numbers kept quite minimal to ensure oodles of peace and space for all who settle here.

Come armed with all your kit, as this is a back-to-basics place that doesn’t have such facilities as toilets and showers. Bring a barbie and you’re welcome to cook out over the coals; if the farm’s flock of happy hens has done its stuff you’re also in for a great breakfast feasting on fresh free-range eggs.

For days when cooking's too much faff, it’s a 20-minute trot to the local pub (just the right amount of walking to work up an appetite) or a five-minute drive to Hurstpierpoint for a little cluster of pubs and takeaways. Away from the animal antics, there are some fab days out nearby – you’ll be a few minutes’ drive from scenic strolls in the South Downs National Park, and 20 or so from beach times in Brighton.

Quiet, rural location. Lovely hosts. Lots of Alpacas and ponies, all very tame and friendly. . Helpful, very accommodating to our change of plans.
Twenty minutes from central Brighton and the sea - perfect for exploring that city. Ten minutes from Devil's Dyke, perfect for hiking.

    Disliked:

No waste water point. Toilet tanks have to be poured into a raised, large tank working above head/from a stepladder which isn't the easiest or most hygienic way of doing it.
Beyond the control of the owners but beware mobile phone reception and TV signal patchy.

Tina and Derek went out of their way to make our family feel welcome abd looked after. Their site is homely, peaceful and a fantastic place to relax with animals to keep kids entertained. Our girls loved bear and the ponies. Such a beautiful view from the top of the field. A hidden gem. We’ll be back!

Tina and Derek are the most loveliest couple and site owners I know. They will spend any time chatting to you and helping with anything they can. They are currently in the middle of installing a couple of toilet and shower facilities which will just complete the tick box for wanting to pitch up somewhere. We’ve only ever stayed for 2 nights at a time but 100% we will be back next t year for a week. I can’t wait already and look forward to going back asap. Also the animals just top off the calmness you feel once there. They are beautiful and so friendly.

My husband and I stayed at Pear Tree Farm for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed the simplicity of our stay. The village and surrounding countryside are beautiful and the site is quiet and well maintained. Our hosts were friendly and helpful and offered us fresh duck and chicken eggs and their friendly alpacas Moon and Bear kept us well entertained!
This campsite does not have many facilities but in our opinion this adds to it's authenticity and charm. If like us, you don't like commercial sites and are looking for peace and quiet( at a very low cost) this is an ideal spot as Brighton is only a 15 minute drive away. We shall definitely stay here again when we are next visiting our daughter.

Local attractions

Seeking somewhere to stroll or cycle? You’ll be sorted in the South Downs National Park – with more than 2,000 miles of paths, it claims to have more to choose from than any other of the UK’s national parks. If the 100 miles of the South Downs Way seems a little daunting, perhaps the six-mile Centurion Way or the 11-mile Meon Valley Trail (along a disused railway line) will be more your style.

Horsey types in search of something a little larger than the Shetland ponies can saddle up for rural rides about 10 minutes’ drive away, or head to Hickstead (five minutes’ drive) or Plumpton races (25 minutes) to see the pros in action. If you’re more into golf than gallops, you can take your pick from three courses within a 10-minute drive.

Set off towards the seaside and you should hit Brighton in about 20 minutes or so. There’s always plenty to do along the buzzing stretch of beach, including watersports galore, traditional amusements on the pier and the excellent Sea Life aquarium. It’s worth leaving time to visit the toy museum and poke around in North Laine’s independent shops and cafés too.

Must see

  • Preston Manor (7.5 miles)
  • Hove Museum & Art Gallery (7.8 miles)
  • Nymans (7.8 miles)
