Alpacas, goats, Shetland ponies… the nippers are likely to love this one (to be fair, it’s likely the grownups will love it too, but feel free to make out it’s for their benefit if it earns you brownie points). If you’re fond of finding furry friends on your holidays, set forth for farmyard fun at Pear Tree Farm, a family-run site 10 minutes’ drive from Henfield (and its handy supermarket and shops). This West Sussex site is part of a 12-acre property, but with guest numbers kept quite minimal to ensure oodles of peace and space for all who settle here. Come armed with all your kit, as this is a back-to-basics place that doesn’t have such facilities as toilets and showers. There is, however, a chemical disposal point with recycled rainwater to wash your toilet out. Bring a barbecue, and you’re welcome to cook out over the coals; if the farm’s flock of happy hens has done its stuff you’re also in for a great breakfast feasting on fresh free-range eggs. For days when cooking's too much faff, it’s a 20-minute trot to the local pub (just the right amount of walking to work up an appetite) or a five-minute drive to Hurstpierpoint for a little cluster of pubs and takeaways. Away from the animal antics, there are some fab days out nearby – you’ll be a few minutes’ drive from scenic strolls in the South Downs National Park, and 20 or so from beach times in Brighton.

Liked What a find this place was. Owners were absolutely lovely, helpful and friendly. It’s small with nothing but the essentials for self contained overnight stops. Water and waste disposal. I stayed 2 nights as was travelling into Brighton during the days. It was nice and quiet at night and you can pitch up right next to the alpacas and ponies.

Disliked Would have liked a water tap a bit closer but hey that’s just me looking for a fault.

Liked Very friendly and helpful hosts, quiet and level site. The owners are slowly making many improvements to the site as finances and local permissions are obtained

Disliked Toilet emptying is via a tall holding tank and is not easy to reach if you are short. There is no tap at the toilet emptying point for rinsing after emptying.

Liked Tina and Derek were so very helpful, and the site was peaceful, with beautiful and inquisitive alpacas!

The location was great for getting into Brighton for a concert - 10-15-minute drive to Hassocks Station, parking at the station, 8-minute train journey into Brighton.

Liked The owners were very welcoming and friendly. The site was basic as advertised with no toilets or showers but was everything we wanted. So peaceful which ensured a great night's sleep. We had Alpacas in the next field,Red Kites above and an owl hooting.. amazing back to nature experience.

Disliked Nothing at all apart from the fact we were only able to stay one night .

You’ll be sorted in the South Downs National Park – with more than 2,000 miles of paths, it claims to have more to choose from than any other of the UK’s national parks. If the 100 miles of the South Downs Way seems a little daunting, perhaps the six-mile Centurion Way or the 11-mile Meon Valley Trail (along a disused railway line) will be more your style. Horsey types in search of something a little larger than the Shetland ponies can saddle up for rural rides about 10 minutes’ drive away, or head to Hickstead (five minutes’ drive) or Plumpton races (25 minutes) to see the pros in action. If you’re more into golf than gallops, you can take your pick from three courses within a 10-minute drive. Set off towards the seaside and you should hit Brighton in about 20 minutes or so. There’s always plenty to do along the buzzing stretch of beach, including watersports galore, traditional amusements on the pier and the excellent Sea Life aquarium. It’s worth leaving time to visit the toy museum and poke around in North Laine’s independent shops and cafés too.
