Evergreen Farm Woodland Campsite: Secluded forest pitch

General

  • Wild site in peaceful woodland on the Sussex Weald
  • Five minutes' drive to East Grinstead shops, pubs and Bluebell railway
  • 10 minutes to Ashdown Forest and 20 to Ardingly Activity Centre

Walk in the steps of Winnie the Pooh on this wild woodland patch of the Sussex Weald.

There’s a touch of drama about checking into Evergreen Farm Woodland Campsite: you make your way to a spot 150 metres from the main site, and you won’t see anything except the trees. A quad bike with a trailer roars down the path to pick up your stuff and take it to a tiny, peaceful site in 10 acres of ancient woodland. With sleeping among the trees, cooking on firepits and listening to the birds, you could be in the wilderness… but you’re five minutes’ drive from town and 40-odd miles from London.

It’s a simple site, focused on peace and quiet in the natural surroundings. Guests have two compost toilets to use; 25-litre containers of drinking water are provided, and firewood can be obtained from the farm (affording a chance to meet the sheep, pigs, goats and horses).

A half-hour walk or a five-minute drive and you’re in East Grinstead, an attractive medieval town well furnished with pubs, eats and supermarkets. The site is also within walking distance of Standen House, an arts and crafts home with William Morris interiors and eye-catching hillside gardens. Nature tamed: a neat contrast with your wild wood accommodation.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Stayed here for the second year running with a small group of close friends. It's perfect if you just want to camp in some woods with a fire and a very minimal set-up. No frills. But Chris keeps you plenty topped up with fire wood and water to wash-up with. For what we were after, it's pretty damn good and we'll be back next year for sure!

Phenomenal campsite. The pitches felt private in the forest and provided ample shade which was a big help in the heat wave.
The staff were friendly and helpful and we appreciated being able to buy firewood on site.

    Disliked:

It could be helpful adding a sign at the road. The exit is easily missed and since google maps gives the wrong location, it makes the campsite hard to find which causes some difficultly with the hills if you’re on foot or bikes.

There was a large pitch in a nice wooded area which seemed peaceful at first. Water was provided along with a couple of chairs and a good sized firepit area.

    Disliked:

The site is described as peaceful site but it is under the flightpath from Gatwick so you hear regular jets flying over. I also found it very noisy with some campers in a nearby pitch staying in a larger group getting drunk and talking loudly. Torches kept being directed towards my tent. They were playing music and talking loudly into the early hours of the morning and even though I texted the site owner I had no response and nothing was done about it.

There was also somewhere nearby playing loud music, possibly a wedding, which was going on until around midnight.

Both of the above made it feel like I was camping in the town centre rather than a peaceful woods.

Finally around the back of the pitch there were multiple locations with discarded toilet roll and wipes. I assume that previous campers had used these areas as a toilet, rather than walking to the compost toilets, and not disposed of the wipes/paper in the bin or fire, choosing instead to just litter the floor nearby making it look unhygienic and like a truckers layby.

I may consider staying there again but would definitely do it out of season when the site would hopefully be quieter and with more respectful campers.

The pitch was clean and far enough away from other campers that we felt we had the forest to ourselves. Chris the owner was really helpful and nothing we asked was too much trouble. Would recommend Evergreen Farm to friends and family. We are already planning to visit again soon.

Local attractions

While you’re in East Grinstead, grab a ticket to ride the Bluebell Railway, where restored steam locomotives take you on a 40-minute tour of the Weald countryside finishing up in Sheffield Park. There's acres of landscaped gardens, parks and woodland to wander round there, and a lake to picnic by.

Walkers and climbers congregate at Stone Hill Rock (15 minutes’ drive), a geological oddity of sandstone crags ripe for clambering up and hiking around. Equally stuffed with trails for the curious is Ashdown Forest (10 minutes), a mix of deep woods and open heathland home to deer, adders, nightjars and a certain famous bear. Make for Pooh Sticks Bridge for the must-do activity on the river stream (20 minutes from site) and seek out Five Hundred Acre Wood to see where it all started. Furry friends of a different kind can be encountered at the llama park 15 minutes from the site.

No deer at Deer Leap Park (five minutes), but mountain bikers have 240 acres of trails and slopes and scrambles to cycle up, down and off; hire bikes here if you haven't brought your own. If water’s more your thing, Ardingly Activity Centre (20 minutes) has the aquatic full monty, from fishing to windsurfing and kayaking to paddleboarding.
