  • Quiet West Sussex site near the village of East Dean
  • Goodwood Estate events 15 minutes’ drive; Chichester 25 minutes
  • In the South Downs National Park, with access to South Downs Way
Setting off for strolls in the South Downs National Park is splendidly easy from Newhouse Farm Wild Camping. This quiet and off-grid wild camping site is part of the Goodwood Estate, and it has footpaths running directly from the farm to the South Downs Way and other parts of the network of trails that run through this scenic part of the world. The farm makes a lovely place for a peaceful rural break in the West Sussex countryside, with pitches spread around the perimeter of a large field that’s got plenty of space in the middle for chilling out or playing games. There are gorgeous views of national park landscapes all around, and clusters of trees on site give a home to local wildlife. It’s a wild camping setup here, but you’ll have access to toilets (although please note no showers or hot water). Dogs and kids are welcome, and campfires and barbecues are permitted to help you cook and keep warm by night. And you may well need that warmth, as you’re likely to want to stay out as long as possible enjoying the starry displays in this International Dark Sky Reserve. The main Goodwood festival site is 15 minutes’ drive away, so this is a handy place to stay if you’re heading to an event there. Closer to home is the village of East Dean, just under two miles away, which has a good foodie pub.

What customers say

This campsite offers a peaceful, remote "wild camping" experience in a beautiful countryside location with stunning views and excellent access to walking trails, including the South Downs Way. Visitors consistently praise the friendly and helpful host, Rachel, the spacious pitches, and the clean, well-maintained portaloos. While facilities are basic, many appreciate the tranquil atmosphere, opportunity for campfires, and dark skies for stargazing. Some note the bumpy access track and patchy mobile signal, but overall, guests highly recommend the site for a back-to-basics escape.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked How peaceful the site was and the fact the you could have a fire pit it's great to have a fire to finish the evening into the night.

Disliked It would have been great if the ground could been a bit more level. However I except the site is on a hill.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked This is a beautiful, peaceful , wild campsite. Great location along a chalky track, surrounded by trees and open fields. Yet it is only a few minutes from goodwood and Chichester. Feels like you are miles from civilisation.
Rachel is lovely and friendly . Delivers logs directly to your door .
Pitch where you like. Allowed fire baskets.
Walks directly from the site . Good pub just down the road.

Bell tent

Liked We stayed in a bell tent which was spacious and clean. 2 single camping beds and a fire pit were included. The site was clean and on the date we stayed the sky was clear, so we could see so many stars which was the main purpose of our visit. Rachel was very considerate, and stopped by each guest to check all was okay.

Disliked The ‘gravel’ road is less the gravel you’d assume and more flinty - we were in a low car and so had to get out constantly and move very large rocks so the car wouldn’t scrape. We expected bumpy, but not driving over literal rocks so this could’ve been specified. The advert also says BBQs are allowed, but nowhere did it specify that disposable BBQs were NOT allowed until the day of arrival, when you receive an email saying this. Our booking included a fire pit and ash-disposal areas were provided on the site, so we couldn’t understand why we couldn’t use the disposable BBQ inside the fire pit.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your wonderful 8-star review. I’m truly grateful, and it was an absolute pleasure having you stay at the farm. I’m especially thrilled you were able to enjoy a clear night and witness the stars — they really are magical over our field, and often present shooting stars as a little treat.

I’m very sorry that you had to move several pieces of flint from our track. In this part of the South Downs National Park, flint and chalk are naturally common and can be quite difficult to manage. Please rest assured that we are consistently working to repair the track. The entrance to our field has already been repaired, and we will continue restoring each section over the winter months until the whole track is complete.

On Pitchup, it is stated under our booking terms and conditions that disposable barbecues are not permitted. It is the first bullet point under ‘General’.

For the safety of our guests and the protection of our environment, disposable (single-use foil) barbecues are not permitted on our site. These can get extremely hot, and in the past, we have witnessed unnecessary bin fires when they have been disposed of before they have cooled to a suitable temperature. In addition to this, disposable barbeques were often used directly on dry grass, which can easily catch fire, as well as causing damage to the ground. Fire safety is our number one concern as our field is surrounded by an ancient woodland. We hope by saying no to disposable barbeques ensures a safer camping field.

The ash drums are provided for ash from fire pits only. The ash is re-used and spread on our organic fields. In the past, removing them has been hazardous and risked injury to us when pulling them out of the drums.

I do hope I will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the farm one day.

With best wishes,
Rachel :)

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked We've stayed here for years and ❤️ the place. It was nice and quiet and not busy at all. Beautiful views and loads of places to explore. The toilets are clean and the taps (water) are more convenient now that they're in the field. Can't wait to come back.

We came as a family of 4 with a 🐕. We've been coming on and off since the kids were around 3 & 6 and they're now 11 & 14. This place is suitable for all.

Rachel was always available if we had any questions or needed a log/kindling reload. We hired a fire pit too which saved us room in our truck. This place is a hidden 💎

It is a bit of a bumpy track road to get to the field which is what you'd expect in an area like this. We drove a pick-up truck so had no problem with the terrain however, most vehicles will be fine as long as you take it slow 🐌 I used to drive a Ford KA & Hyundai i30 which were fine coming here but quite bumpy in parts. Dont let this put you off.

This is basic camping so if you're expecting anything more than your pitch, clean running water and clean toilets then it might not be for you. This is exactly why we love it 😀

There are also pods/bell tents available.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Rachel is a brilliant host and really cares about the site and the people staying there.
The site is clean and tidy. Loos basic but clean and checked often.
The field has easy access to the forest and south downs way. There is a great shop in graffham where you buy nearly anything!! The coffee is good.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Been visiting this site for over 25 years now.

Disliked Lack of toilets for the amount of pitches.
There were at least a 100 people on Saturday night with only 6 or 7 portaloo’s between everyone which for the price of the pitch is a bit much.
Also I feel the entrance road could do with getting sorted as it’s not the best to drive down when loaded up with camping gear.

From the manager: Dear Tim,

Thank you for your review and for coming to stay at the farm again this weekend. We really lucked out with the weather.

With regards to the toilets, we have nine units available. There are five units on the left as you come into the field and four units on the far side. Both sides of the field also provide an accessible unit, which is an increase from previous years at the farm. I service these units regularly throughout the day and night.

I too have had the pleasure of camping at the farm for many years now. When I took on the management of Newhouse Farm Camping last year, on behalf of the Goodwood Estate, the track was our first mission. You will have noticed the repairs that have been made to the track as you approach the field and the two passing places that have been added. These repairs and passing places will continue to take place until we have completed the whole track.

I do hope we will get to see you again soon.

With best wishes,
Rachel

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked This is one of our favourite sites. It’s in the most beautiful rural location, down a long winding farm track.
There’s wonderful beach trees all the way round the site. Home to at least 6 owls that sounded so amazing. You’ll also see bats, dragonflies and of course stars and the odd shooting star!!
Rachel, who runs the site, just couldn’t be more helpful.
The nearest village is East Dean, which is breathtakingly pretty and has a rather good pub.
We took a trip to West Wittering beach, which was fabulous. There are so many other things to do and see.

Local attractions

A stay at Newhouse Farm puts you in pole position for the numerous festivals at Goodwood Estate, but the campsite is just as close to the fascinating Weald and Downland Living Museum (both 10 minutes’ drive), with its carefully restored historic farmhouses and half-timbered cottages. Chichester (25 minutes) is another cultural hotspot with a Gothic-era cathedral and events at the acclaimed Festival Theatre. Equally unmissable is the verdant West Dean Gardens (15 minutes), with its fabulous display of informal plantings, pretty waterside walks and Victorian glasshouses. There’s a stellar collection of Old Master paintings and ornate suites of rooms filled with priceless treasures at National Trust-owned Petworth House and Park, or you can step further back in time at Fishbourne Roman Palace (both 25 minutes) to see decorative mosaics in a life-size mock-up of an ancient Roman villa. If the kids want their day at the beach, choose between the sand-and-shingle expanse backed by cafés and amusement arcades at Bognor Regis or walk the dogs along the quiet sands at West Wittering (40 minutes).
