  • Quiet West Sussex wild camping site near the village of East Dean
  • A 15-minute drive to main Goodwood Estate; Chichester 25 minutes
  • In the South Downs National Park, with access to South Downs Way
Setting off for strolls in the South Downs National Park is splendidly easy from Newhouse Farm Wild Camping. This quiet off-grid site is part of the Goodwood Estate, and it has footpaths running directly from the farm to the South Downs Way and other parts of the network of trails that run through this scenic part of the world. The farm makes a lovely place for a peaceful rural break in the West Sussex countryside, with pitches spread around the perimeter of a large field that's got plenty of space in the middle for chilling out or playing games. There are gorgeous views of the national park landscapes all around, and clusters of trees on site giving a home to local wildlife. It's a wild camping-style setup here, but you’ll have access to toilets (although please note no showers or hot water). Dogs and kids are welcome, and campfires and barbecues are permitted to help you cook and keep warm by night. And you may well need that warmth, as you’re likely to want to sit out for as long as possible, looking up at the starry displays in this International Dark Sky Reserve. The main Goodwood site is about 10 to 15 minutes' drive away, so this is a handy place to stay if you're heading to an event there. Closer to home is the village of East Dean, just under two miles away, which has a good food pub.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful view, very clean porta-loos, quiet area, good communication from campsite manager. Great for walkers or those that want a remote location with a beautiful view over the Downs.

Disliked: These are not dislikes really, because it’s a wild camping experience, but be aware there are no showers, not currently the ability to dispose of grey waste or toilet waste. Phone signal is not good at places on the site. There is a very rough track leading to the site.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: A brilliant elevated spot which was thick with grass (April) so super comfy for camping with tents. Surrounded my trees so lots of wildlife to listen too. Super communications also from the owner throughout our stay.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: A beautiful open expanse surrounded by deciduous trees, offers privacy, this site would never be overcrowded, the height of the field gives a great vantage point for sunset.

Disliked: For some people the road to the field may be a lot if they have a very nice car, my SUV was fine but I can see it being an issue for others.

Liked: Lovely quiet and natural site. Like wild camping but with a toilet and water supply. Lovely woodland walks around the site. Beautiful spot on the South Downs. Great pub nearby called the star and garter. Will return.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The choices above are not relevant to the Wild camping experiance I had. Our host was superb, outstanding communication, very friendly and welcoming. Fresh water is being piped upto the fields and more than adequate toilet provision was available. The local pup offers a generous discount to campers if you show your booking form and is only a short hike away. The camping area is reasonably flat, so much so that with a small block on 1 wheel I manged to level the van off. I would advise a reasonable amount of ground clearance, super lowered VW campers may struggle. When wet the grass can be a little slippy in places with normal road wheels, but a short run up solved the puzzle, but dont let these small things prevent you from experiencing this dark light Nature reserve, Bats, Owls, plenty of birds , foxes, badgers, deer a plenty.

Disliked: Nothing, it was superb

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: I stayed during the campsites soft opening. The below is based on my experience. I am sure that the campsite will only improve over time. There are great views and large area to pitch in. Many areas of even flat grass. Very quiet. Lots of scope to make it a really good campsite in future.

Disliked: At about 10.30 a campervan entered the site, they made a lot of noise setting up and then played loud dance music till 2 am. It got louder with every tequila. There didn't appear to be anyone onsite or any sort of security getting to the campsite. Guess it was bad luck for me, but, it is open to anyone showing up at anytime. If I had seen a group pitch up a little earlier in the evening I would have moved further away and it wouldn't have been a problem.

From the manager: Dear John, Please may I offer my sincere apologies that your stay with us was not a pleasant one. I am very sad to read that fellow campers did not respect our policy noted under 'General' of our 'Booking Terms and Conditions' that our quiet hours are between 10pm and 7am. I would really like to welcome you back to Newhouse Farm Wild Camping and will contact you directly. With best regards, Rachel

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We loved the open space, there are so many walks in the surrounding area. The views from anywhere on the site are amazing. The toilets were clean, and had plenty of toilet roll and sanitizer. On arrival Rachel the campsite manager met us to make sure we settled in OK, she was extremely friendly and helpful. After I booked the stay we received very detailed information including directions and photographs explaining how to gain access to the campsite. Overall a fantastic experience and we will be coming back.

Disliked: Nothing!

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Rachel the owner was absolutely wonderful. Gave great instructions on how to find the farm and the camping field. Made sure we were aware the recent rainfall made it a bit slippy and offered an alternative field. Recommended a lovely pub for us to get food before setting up camp for the night. The views from the top field were stunning. We rented a fire pit for the evening which Rachel delivered to our pitch. The portaloos were clean and well kept.
