  • Cosy shepherd’s huts at a family-run dairy farm on the South Downs Way
  • WWT Arundel 10 minutes’ drive; Goodwood House half an hour
  • Dog-friendly site with calf feeding; five minutes’ walk to the pub
A brace of shepherd’s huts on a working dairy farm, with spectacular views of Arundel Castle from the glampsite and direct access to the South Downs Way – when you’re looking to exchange urban life for a taste of country living, things don’t get much more rural than Splash Farm, sitting pretty in the tiny Sussex village of Wepham. Set in the fully enclosed corner of a field adjacent to the farmyard, each carefully restored shepherd’s hut sleeps up to four people. To get you going, your first morning’s breakfast is provided in a generous hamper – plus an added treat of homemade brownies to keep the munchies away. Anything else you need can be sourced in the supermarkets of Arundel (10 minutes’ drive). Once installed in your cosy hideaway, stroll down to the local pub (five minutes’ walk), head for the coast at Littlehampton beach (15 minutes’ drive) or be farmers for the day: the owners – the fourth generation to farm here – are happy for you to watch the morning milking session and let your kids feed the Friesian calves. High-vis jackets are provided to keep you all safe, and all hands must be washed after visiting the farmyard. One well-behaved dog per shepherd’s hut is welcome, and towelling robes are provided for your furry pals in case of any muddy mishaps while you’re all out walking.

2 bedroom shepherd's hut

Liked: Liked the peaceful location, perfect for starting walks. Walking distance from Arundel. The huts were perfect, cosy and modern, with everything one needs, down to great board games. Sally is a great host and a great cook (highly recommended the homemade dishes). Our sons (9 and 13) enjoyed watching the cows milking and feeding the calves, and toasting marshmallows in the fire pit.

Disliked: There were issues with the wifi but we did not mind, there was no time for screen.

Local attractions

Thanks to its location in the South Downs National Park, Splash Farm is hiking and cycling central, with direct access to the long-distance South Downs Way. If birds are your thing, take the binoculars to WWT Arundel (10 minutes), and combine a wetland walk with (hopefully) spotting swans, Canada geese and lapwings as you go. Goodwood House (half an hour) hosts numerous events, including the Festival of Speed, a summer highlight for car fanatics in late June or early July, and horse racing’s prestigious Goodwood Festival (in August). If you miss the latter, you can still get your fix at Fontwell Racecourse (15 minutes). Meanwhile if you’ve taken TV’s 'The Repair Shop' to your heart, you can visit the Weald and Downland Living Museum (half an hour), where the programme is filmed. There’s history by the bucketload to be found in lively Arundel (10 minutes), with a castle, cathedral and heritage museum to explore. Alternatively, head for historic Chichester to walk the walls that wrap the city centre, stroll in the peaceful Bishop’s Palace Gardens and book a play or musical at the famed Chichester Festival Theatre.
